What a Summer, What a Place

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Not a day goes by that I don’t drive, walk, or ride my bike over the amazing piece of engineering that connects the towns of Houghton and Hancock, and each and every time that takes place I want to stop and stare (I’m pretty sure I’d piss off too many people if I stopped, however). How is it possible that some of us get to live here?

That being said, I think everyone that lives here looks forward to all of the seasons for their own reasons, but summer is one of those that we all love. It FLIES by, but so many memories are created and so many pictures are snapped. With each snap of the shutter it’s already time to think about capturing your next memory. Below are just a few of the hundreds of memories some of us had the opportunity to capture this summer. What a place, and what a summer!

Windsurfing on Lake Superior

Water skiing on the portage waterway

Bike racing on the Tech Trails

Catching a sunset

An Almost Sure Sign

There comes a time when some of us get so excited it’s hard to sit. For me, that time is right about now.

For those of you that don’t know me I am an avid “adventure athlete”, which means my life revolves around what’s going outside. My wife will frequently argue that my sports take precedence over her, but the fact remains that if windy, I’m windsurfing. If it’s snowing, I’m skiing. If it’s calm and warm, I’ll be water skiing. And one of the best things about living here is that it is all SO CLOSE!

So the summer came and went, but now the leaves are just about off of the trees and the weather is turning cooler…..which leads me to this:

Issued by The National Weather Service

… STRONG WINDS AND SIGNIFICANT SNOW POSSIBLE ON SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MAINLY OVER NORTHWEST UPPER MICHIGAN…

A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL CROSS UPPER MICHIGAN SATURDAY NIGHT… USHERING A CHILLY CANADIAN AIRMASS INTO THE GREAT LAKES. EXPECT NORTHWEST WINDS IN THE WAKE OF THIS FRONT TO GUST AS HIGH AS 45 MPH OVER PORTIONS OF UPPER MICHIGAN… ESPECIALLY THE KEWEENAW PENINSULA ON SUNDAY.

COLDER AIR WILL RUSH IN BEHIND THE FRONT… OVER THE RELATIVELY WARM WATERS OF LAKE SUPERIOR. EXPECT LAKE EFFECT RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS TO DEVELOP LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND PERSIST THROUGH MONDAY. THE SHOWERS WILL BE MOST NUMEROUS IN THE NORTHWEST WIND SNOW BELTS OF WESTERN UPPER MICHIGAN AND EAST OF MARQUETTE. PLAN ON THE BEST CHANCE OF A SIGNIFICANT PLOWABLE LAKE EFFECT SNOW LATE SUNDAY INTO MONDAY OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF INTERIOR WESTERN UPPER MICHIGAN FROM PELKIE TO WATTON… BRUCE CROSSING… PAINT LAKE AND MARENISCO.

To get even more “in the spirit”, the ski swap at our very own Mont Ripley is on Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm.

I can’t wait!

This is the place we live….and we want to share it!

Hello from Houghton, MI!

Before we start posting about random shenanigans, we thought we’d open the blog with a little kick off post.

The purpose of this blog is to bring you into our world and immerse you in the culture we have the privilege of being a part of. This is a Michigan Technological University blog, but you’ll find that it’s not so much a blog about Tech, but a blog about the immersion of our lives into this unbelievable place. The target audience is you (yeah, you). Whether you’re applying to Michigan Tech, a current student, an alum who’s missing it here (we understand, we miss it when we leave for 24 hours), or a parent who has so graciously lent us the life of your child for a few years, we want you to know what life is like from our point of view.

So, what can you expect to see? Well, again, the goal is to immerse you in our culture. Photos, video, and funny stories are all part of this game. Don’t forget to check back regularly and tell your friends, here’s the link.

But for now, kick back and eagerly await the first real “bloggy” post. It may (or may not) knock your socks off. If it doesn’t, give us a chance, we’re bound to have you in a stitch or have you wishing you were here with the rest of us. This is the place we live.
