Michigan Tech Huskymail is “going Google.” The Michigan Tech Huskymail email system will be migrating to the Education Edition of Google Apps the weekend of March 31st. Alumni and friends of the University that have Huskymail accounts (@mtu.edu) will be transitioned along with the students, faculty, and staff.
Google Apps for Education will replace our current Zimbra collaboration suite. Google Apps includes Mail, Calendar, Documents, Sites (web pages), Contacts and over 40 other applications (visit http://goo.gl/yxeAO for full list). We have signed a five year agreement in which we have resolved all issues regarding privacy, ownership and intellectual property regarding the University data which will reside within their applications.
All persons with a Huskymail account should read through the Going Google site (http://goinggoogle.mtu.edu) where you will be able to read announcements, get answers to frequently asked questions, go through self paced learning of the different applications, and contact us about further questions you have about this transition. Please ensure you familiarize yourself with the information on the Pre-Migration Checklist and the migration time line as the March 31st migration date is fast approaching.
Alumni should pay special attention to access issues when trying to log in to their Michigan Tech Google Apps account. We are currently syncing passwords with anyone that logs in at the www.login.mtu.edu web site. While a fair number of faculty, staff, and students do this on a daily basis, alumni are not currently used to doing this. As such, I would urge any alum that is having difficulty in accessing their account to first navigate to www.login.mtu.edu and click on the “Sync your google password” link on the left side.
There is a lot of information on the Going Google website: http://goinggoogle.mtu.edu/ but if you have additional questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask!
