A welcome Blizzard in October!

On Monday, October 13, after much anticipation, Husky Plaza was finally made complete with the dedication and unveiling of the new statue, dubbed “Bronze Blizzard.” The air was brisk but charged with excitement. The Huskies Pep Band gave their customary spirited performance and the Alumni Association served free root beer floats.

After brief speeches from President Glenn Mroz, Dan Lorenzetti, Darnishia Slade, Past President of the Alumni Association, and Alissa Alexander of the Student Philanthropy Council, a coalition of students removed the drape and we all welcomed our newest addition to campus.

With true Michigan Tech spirit, the students made the statue their own, taking “selfies” and even climbing up on the statue!

A video of the dedication is available here.

Alumni Cup returns home

We Are the Champions

by Dennis Walikainen for TechAlum e-newsletter

All is right with the world. The Alumni Cup has returned home to its rightful owners, us, after an impressive 12-0 victory Saturday night. The alumni team, Kilty as Charged, scored early and often, as the student team, Fellowship of the Rink, struggled to generate offense during the first outdoor Alumni-Student Broomball Invitational.

Matt Brechin ’12 led the scoring for the victors with four goals. The mechanical engineering alum lives in Grand Rapids and works for Dematic. He was joined by Pat “The Leprecahun” McKeon and Travis Neu, two current students who rounded out the roster and had multiple-goal games.

A nice-sized crowd was on hand on a chilly but still night. Shouts of “You gotta have heart.” “Get it!” “Go girl!” “Stay with it!” echoed in the evening air. Also new this year, alumni and friends could catch all the action on one of our broomball webcams.

The four student teams that played down represented DHH, West Wads, East Wads, and McNair: the four broomball leagues on campus. There were eight alumni teams.

The Fellowship of the Rink goalie, Danielle Kehrig, played a good game and kept the score from being much worse. Her team got a nice round of applause as they got their  medals.

Kilty as Charged were all smiles as Alumni Association President Darnishia Slade ’98 presented their medals. You could almost hear the Olympics theme in the background.

When asked what was the secret to the victory, Brechin thought about and then replied, “Teamwork.”

More than 100 Michigan Tech alumni and friends from all over the country gathered on campus October 12-13 for Alumni Homecoming 2012.  After Friday’s Homecoming parade, alumni, students, and friends were warmed by chili served by the Alumni Association while they cheered on students competing in the cardboard boat races.

Saturday’s Alumni-Student Broomball Invitational preliminary alumni rounds brought out competitive spirits and big appetites that were satisfied at the VIP football tailgate catered by the Library Restaurant and Brew Pub.

The weekend’s events were capped off with a skybox at the Saturday night hockey game directly followed by the 4th Annual Alumni-Student Broomball Invitational championship game.  The student team, The Pirate Sheep, claimed the Alumni Cup this year.
