Auxiliaries Showcase

Flash Sales, Buyback, Commencement

Posted by mrross under The Campus Bookstore, University Images

The Campus Bookstore is a busy place for the next week and a half.  Next week is finals week and that means the busy time for students selling back their textbooks and returning rented books.  Book buyback is always available at the store, but next week there will be locations in the residence halls available for selling those books.  This is when you can get the best prices for your textbooks.  The Bookstore is stocking up on textbooks for next semester so they are paying more for those books.  Books that are not ordered by professors for next semester are purchased at a lower price – the price the used book vendor is paying for them.

With Commencement next Saturday, the Bookstore is also busy handing out the ceremony tickets to graduates and giving out the caps and gowns that were ordered.

Today, Wednesday, April 24, is the annual Customer Appreciation Sale at the Bookstore and University Images.  Both stores are open until 6 pm and just about everything is an additional 25% off (textbooks are one of the exceptions).  This is a great time for graduates to get their diploma frames and a shirt from their soon-to-be alma mater.  Even the items already on clearance are another 25% off.

Last week they also started something new – Flash Sales.  Flash sales are a short, usually 2 hour long sale where the item(s) on sale are often less than half price.  Last Friday they had a blanket and a sweatshirt for $10.  Yesterday there were backpacks and laptop bags for $25.  These were some amazing deals.  To find out about these Flash Sales, you have to watch the Campus Bookstore on Facebook.

The End is Coming

Posted by mrross under Auxiliary Services

The end of the semester is drawing near and the students are busy with projects and preparing for finals.  The next few weeks will be busy for everyone, including Auxiliary Services.

Mont Ripley may be closed for the season (and what a great season it was), but they are busy with projects to get ready for next year.  They are going to be doing a major overhaul on the Husky lift including new wire rope, electric motor, gearbox, “bull wheels” and more.  They are also looking at putting in a tubing park which is really exciting.

With Mont Ripley wrapping up, the crew at the Portage Lake Golf Course is chomping at the bit, waiting for the snow to melt so they can get the course ready.  While they may have a while yet to wait, they have been busy inside the clubhouse.  They hosted a Masters party this past weekend and the Pro Shop is looking good.

The Bookstore is ramping up for one of their busiest times.  The Customer Appreciation Sale at the Bookstore and University Images is next Wednesday, April 24 and right after that is the busiest week for book buyback.  They will be in the residence halls again during finals week or you can bring your books to sell back or rentals to return to the store any day.  Undergraduate students can purchase their cap and gown for commencement any time and graduate students will be picking up their pre-ordered regalia the week before the ceremony.  Tickets for graduation will also be available in the Bookstore starting next week, April 22.

The Rozsa Center is hosting two more events – “Fiddler on the Roof” this coming weekend and the “Springtime Voices” concert the following.  That won’t be the end to their busy season.  This summer they will be selling tickets for Bill Cosby and “Beautiful” along with getting everything ready for next season.

With all the activity happening on and around campus these next few weeks, be sure to stay safe.  Good luck graduates!

One Last Run

Posted by mrross under Mont Ripley Ski Hill

This weekend is your last chance to hit the slopes one more time before the season finally comes to an end.  Mont Ripley will be open:

Friday, April 5, 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Saturday, April 6, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sunday, April 7, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

With the recent cold and snow the conditions on the hill are great.  This weekend is even calling for some more snow.  After this weekend Mont Ripley plans to close so they can begin some major maintenance work to be ready for next year.

I learned an interesting tidbit this morning – Mont Ripley has 200 pairs of rental skis and 100 rental snowboards!  Even with that many, they do rent out all of them a few times each year.  They pride themselves on taking good care of that equipment and I can confirm that it is in great shape.  They make sure to grind, sharpen, and wax them regularly and they can get a good life from them.  Each year they replace a certain amount of them to keep their high standards.

What’s Happening

Posted by mrross under Auxiliary Services

This is a quiet week for campus with the students gone on Spring Break, but there are still some things happening in Auxiliary Services.

Portage Lake Golf Course

Congratulations to the Portage Lake Golf Course General Manager and Head Golf Pro Mark Maroste, for successfully passing all of the tests to become a licenses Class A PGA Professional!  This classification symbolizes expertise in managing a golf course, teaching the game of golf, and playing the game at a professional level.  Over the last 6 years he has participated in the training and testing process to earn the elite status.  There are only 27,000 licensed Golf Professionals in the U.S., and thanks to Mark’s hard work, the Portage Lake Golf Course now has its first Class A PGA Pro.

Speaking of golf, don’t forget to purchase your membership!  Early bird discounts are in effect until April 1 on all season-long purchases.  Visit the Portage Lake Golf Course website to purchase yours.

Customer Appreciation Week

Don’t forget the Customer Appreciation Week events going on this week.  It all kicked off with skiing or snowboarding lessons this past Saturday at Mont Ripley and concludes with the free concert by Cheap Therapy on Friday night in the Rozsa Center Lobby.  There is the Guest Room Open House and Lean Tours in the Memorial Union, Food Trivia in the Memorial Union Food Court, Workplace Crime Prevention Presentations, Putting Lessons, and a luncheon featuring the new Catering menu.  Check out the full schedule of activities online.

Mont Ripley

There are 12 more days left to hit the slopes at Mont Ripley.  With all the snow we are getting, the conditions are still outstanding.  While you’re there remember to check out the excellent deals at the ski shop.

Sale at Mont Ripley

The Ski Shop at Mont Ripley has some great deals going on!  Right now all coats and pants are 35% off.  Other clothing and accessories are buy 1 get 1 half price including gloves, goggles, and more.  This sale will continue for the remainder of the season.

This is the last week of the Prime Season.  The Value Season starts March 9.  This means a change in hours (Monday-Thursday 4-8 pm, Friday 4-9 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am – 5 pm)  and reduced price daily tickets, just $25 for a full day.  With all the snow we got in February, the conditions should still be great.  Get out there and enjoy the last few weeks on the hill!

The picture above can also be seen on Mont Ripley’s Facebook page and was taken by Public Safety & Police Services Chief Dan Bennett.  What an awesome picture!

In Print and On Display

Student Process Improvement Coordinator, Kaylee Betzinger, and Market Research Analyst Intern, Brittany Wood had their article, “Learning Lean Process Improvement, One Little Change at a Time,” published in the February edition of Business Officer. The article highlights the process improvement efforts of Dining Services over the last four years and how the small, incremental improvements have added up to $1 million in savings.  The article will be available online at www.nacubo.org in the Business Officer Magazine section.

Congratulations to Public Safety & Police Services Chief of Police, Dan Bennett.  The Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock will be featuring him as a “new artist,” displaying 8-9 of his photographs this month.  Be sure to check them out.

The Ticket Office in the SDC was given the Harlem Globetrotters commemorative basketball from their show last April and the ball is now on display in the office.

Winter Carnival Happenings

Posted by mrross under Auxiliary Services, Mont Ripley Ski Hill, Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, The Campus Bookstore

Winter Carnival is here again!  Auxiliary Services departments are getting ready for the big weekend.

The Campus Bookstore and University Images
The Bookstore will be open extra hours this weekend – Saturday 10 am until 5 pm and Sunday noon until 5.  University Images will be open through the hockey games both Friday and Saturday nights (Go Huskies!) and have addition Sunday hours from noon until 5 pm.  This year’s apparel looks great in red and it also comes in black.  They have the glassware again this year too.  Make sure to get in soon to make sure you get the item you want!

Rozsa Center
This year’s feature at the Rozsa Center is Comedy Central on Campus, sticking with the comedy tradition that they have been doing lately during Carnival.  This event is sure to keep you laughing.  Don’t forget to pick up your tickets for the weekend hockey games and 2 days of basketball games while you’re at the Ticket Office and remember that Saturday night’s game is early.  There are also the other great Winter Carnival traditions that take place in the Rozsa including Stage Revue.

Mont Ripley
Mont Ripley is also offering extended hours for Winter Carnival.  This Thursday and Friday they will be open from noon until 8 pm.  With no classes for the students it is a great chance for them to hit the slopes.  Come out and try one of the best ski areas in the Midwest, right here in our own backyard.  Saturday is SnoComp with the Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Show in the evening.

Auxiliaries Past…Do You Remember? Part 2

Posted by mrross under Auxiliary Services, The Memorial Union

This is the second post about things we remember from Auxiliary Services past.  The first post in this series can be found here.

The Memorial Union

In 2002 the Keweenaw Commons got a face lift.  Before that there were metal sculptures in between the sections that divided up the space.  Things were also very mauve.

In what is now the Catering Office next to the Commons there was an arcade.  One person remembers hanging out in there between classes watching the Mortal Kombat battles.  After the arcade games went away that space became the Outdoor Adventure Programs office where you could rent equipment and sign up for the various activities they offered.  The Outdoor Adventures Program outgrew that space and moved to a house across the street from the main part of campus.  The space is now the home of Dining Services’ Catering staff.

Have you ever noticed that round area in the hallway by the Bookstore towards the Alumni Lounge?  That used to be a ticket office.  You could purchase tickets for campus events.  That was before the Rozsa Center was here, so I think it was just sporting events and maybe some Visual & Performing Arts events.  When the ticket office closed, that little space became a retail outlet for one of the cellular phone companies.  After that there was nothing in it for some time while they tried to figure out how to use the space.  It is now a storage area for the Memorial Union.

Someone from the office remembers when their parents were coming to Michigan Tech, they would get dropped off at the Memorial Union in the student lounge for the day.  The lounge was right out of the 70′s with orange furniture and all!  These days you may see parents with children on campus but not many kids by themselves.

What is now the Datolite Room used to be office space that housed Tech Express and the Auxiliary Technology staff (IT support for Auxiliary departments, now part of ITSS).  Tech Express moved out to the window area in the hallway, which is now the USG office, then into the Campus Bookstore until it recently moved to the Service Center in the Library.

Down the hallway where Student Activities is currently housed were more guest rooms, in addition to the ones that are still on the second floor.  At one point at least one of those rooms became an office for the Director of Auxiliary Technology.  When they moved out of the Memorial Union and into the Administration building completely that whole end of the hall was remodeled for Student Activities.

Having worked in the Campus Bookstore I often heard stories about when the Memorial Union was expanded in the late 80′s.  I think that the area that currently holds the textbooks along with the Alumni Lounge were added along with the Food Court.  While construction was underway the Bookstore moved its goods to a storage trailer and did some sales from the ROTC gym.  The staff can look back and laugh, but at the time it wasn’t very fun!

Since the Memorial Union was first opened in 1952 it has changed to meet the current needs of the Michigan Tech campus.  It has been and will continue to be interesting to watch that transformation.

Do you have any old memories or pictures of the Memorial Union or other Auxiliary areas?  Please share them with me!
