Think Like a Start-Up

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

4040934987_3deb9ffb1a_bWhy is entrepreneurial thinking such a hot topic? In a challenging economy companies, organizations, and individuals have to be lean, efficient, and productive to thrive. Who can benefit from operating with a startup mentality? Business executives, Universities, entrepreneurs, athletes, and politicians and many others all could benefit. Let’s see what some of the greatest business minds have to say about startups and entrepreneurial thinking?

1. Thrash Early to Ship on Time - Seth Godin: Best Selling Author/Marketing Guru

“What you do for a living is not be creative, what you do is ship. Shipping is fraught with risk and danger. Every time you raise your hand, send an email, launch a product or make a suggestion, you’re exposing yourself to criticism. Not just criticism, but the negative consequences that come with wasting money, annoying someone in power or making a fool of yourself. It’s no wonder we’re afraid to ship.”

2. Forget your Failures - Guy Kawasaki: Founding Partner of Garage Technology Ventures/Author of ‘Reality Check’

“There is no better place in the world to fail than Silicon Valley. Indeed, some people have made a career of failing. Some for generations. Not in Silicon Valley. Here, it doesn’t matter (within reason) how many times you fail, as long as you eventually succeed. So many entrepreneurs who failed went on to create massive successes that we’ve learned that failure is a poor predictor of future results.”

3. Be Narrow - Evan Williams: Founder of Twitter

“Focus on the smallest possible problem you could solve that would potentially be useful. Most companies start out trying to do too many things, which makes life difficult and turns you into a me-too. Focusing on a small niche has so many advantages: With much less work, you can be the best at what you do.”

4. Focus on Corporate Culture - Tony Hsieh: CEO of Zappos/Author of ‘Delivering
“At Zappos, our belief is that if you get the culture right, most of the other stuff — like great customer service, or building a great long-term brand, or passionate employees and customers — will happen naturally on its own.”

5. Don’t Worry about Competitors - Paul Graham: Founder of Y-Combinator/Startup School

“One reason people overreact to competitors is that they overvalue ideas. If ideas really were the key, a competitor with the same idea would be a real threat. But it’s usually execution that matters:
All the scares introduced by seeing a new competitor pop up are forgotten weeks later. It always comes down to your own product and approach to the market.”

6. Start a Business not a Start-up: Jason Fried: Founder of 37-Signals/Author of ‘Rework

Startups can bring new ideas to market. They can give people a chance to change the world on their own terms. They can create something where nothing existed before. There is no doubt that they are exciting things to be a part of.

Let us know your thoughts on thinking like a startup whether you are a student, seeking an MBA, a business executive or entrepreneur.
