In this #mbachat we will discuss how to build a network for professional growth.  The best time to start building your network was at least a year ago and more importantly before you needed it. Growing your network doesn’t necessarily mean growing the quantity of followers. Growing your network could simply mean growing the quality of the relationships that will encourage people to act on your call to action.  During this #mbachat we will discuss some of the top tips.

Posted by Hajj E. Flemings under Tech MBA Minute

YouTube Preview ImageHajj Flemings, the Tech MBA Online Program Ambassador, discusses teaching marketing online with Assistant Professor of Marketing Dr. Jun Min in this Tech MBA Minute. In this interview, learn what a Tech MBA Online student can expect in Dr. Min’s marketing class and the technology that is used to engage students.

Discussed In this interview

  • What can a student expect to learn about Marketing, Technology, and Globalization in the Tech MBA Online?
  • How technology is used in the class to create interactive and engaging learning experiences—not just a lectures.
  • Why prospective students should consider enrolling in the Tech MBA Online program?

One of the central themes of this interview is marketing thinking versus marketing as just a sales tool. In this discussion Dr. Min cites one of the world’s most iconic brands, Disney, as a case study and their effective implementation of marketing thinking into their culture.

Dr. Min also discusses some of the technologies that have been integrated into the Tech MBA Online program. He shares how the teacher-to-student and peer-to-peer engagement is much richer due to the advancement of technologies like Skype and Blackboard. One of the great take away points is how online education mirrors the changing workplace.

Bio of Dr. Jun Min

Junhong Min earned his Ph.D. in Marketing from the State University of New York at Binghamton, as well as a Master of Marketing Research (MMR) from the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Prior to entering the Binghamton Ph.D. program, Junhong Min was a senior research executive at Nielsen, NY. He has also served as a marketing consultant for a variety of marketing research projects. He brings this practical background to both his research and teaching efforts.

Life of an Online Student – Michael Vigrass

Posted by Hajj E. Flemings under Tech MBA Minute, Tech MBA Online

YouTube Preview ImageLearn about the finer points of time management and career-life balance from first year Tech MBA Online student, Michael Vigrass, who is a Supervisor of Measurement & Control at DTE Energy in Detroit, MI. Michael is also a husband, father of two children, and lives a pretty action packed life. Watch the video, or see a summary of the conversation below.

Discussion with Mike Vigrass

A major point of emphasis in Mike’s program experience is time management. He discusses how balancing his education and career is a family commitment that is supported by his wife. Making sometimes tough decisions on how he spends his weekends and downtime are offset in the short-term by his long-term career goals.

Technology plays a large role in Mike’s activities. He uses Toodledo, a free To-Do-List software applicatioin that can be accessed on mobile devices (iPhone and Android), and Google Calendar. Both of these tools help him to track the busy parts of life and effectively meet his MBA requirements. Mike also uses Skype for virtual collaboration with classmates which has made the interaction and engagement with other students quite seamless.

An interesting point that Mike makes is that he  has had more interaction with classmates in his online classes than in some of his on-campus classes as an undergrad at Michigan Tech. Watch the full interview.

Choosing the Right MBA Program: A Simplified Choice

Posted by Hajj E. Flemings under Announcements, Events

Choosing the right MBA program has the potential to impact your life in many ways: your career, your family life, and your goals. As a potential MBA student, understanding the important selection criterion for your needs is crucial when considering an MBA. Below you will find information highlighting types of MBA programs and five criterion that will help you through the selection process.

Learn more about, ‘Choosing the Right MBA Program’ in our free webinar on December 9, 2010 at 6pm EST. Ask Ruth Archer, Graduate Business Program Director, about any questions regarding the pursuit of your MBA degree.

Types of MBA Degree Programs

MBA Programs are typically grouped into two categories: full-time and part-time. Each person has to determine which program type works best with their career and work/life goals.

Note: Executive MBA programs have intentionally been left out of this conversation because they are targeted at seasoned executives with extensive work experience who are seeking an MBA.

5 Factors to Help You Find the Best MBA Program

The Tech MBA Online is built around factors that we use to define a quality program. Other programs tend to have a few of these areas covered, but typically not all of them. Recently, Businessweek noted our program’s presence in a listing of distance learning programs..

  • Accreditation – Accreditation is the foundation of a credible MBA program. Confirming that the MBA your pursue is AACSB accredited will ensure your degree is from a credible institution with rigorous teaching and research standards. Upon graduation you want to be sure that your diploma  will be recognized by your employer or future employers. Non-accredited programs may not provide you the best results for your efforts.
  • Curriculum – When you are selecting a program, be sure that the program focus aligns with your career goals. Although this sounds simple it can be easy to get drawn into a popular program that does not match your post-graduate career goals. You should also consider who will be teaching the curriculum. For example, the Tech MBA Online program has qualified professors who teach on-campus, you will not be taught by a graduate assistant.
  • Networking – Typically online MBA programs cannot provide valuable networking experiences. The Tech MBA Online focuses on networking during the three face-to-face residencies and provides opportunities for networking through our alumni association. This ensures that you receive peer-to-peer interaction with the other students, faculty, and staff involved with the program.
  • Professional Development – As the job market becomes increasingly competitive; presentation, etiquette, and writing skills will play a larger role in preparing you for career opportunities. We have developed a series of professional development workshops to complement the curriculum and ensure the development of well-rounded students.
  • Cost – When considering an MBA program consider the cost drivers below. The Tech MBA Online is competitively priced to offer a quality education through the convenience of online learning.
    • Out-of-pocket cost: This is what you pay for tuition, books, and fees.
    • Opportunity cost: What you are giving up to complete your degree, i.e., if you travel to and from campus for a face-to-face program, the fuel cost would be an opportunity cost.
    • Long-term cost: Student loans or other costs that you will be repaying over a long period of time.

The Tech MBA Online was developed to meet these critical factors in MBA selection. Contact Ruth Archer, Director of Graduate Business Programs to find out more about choosing the right MBA for you (mba@mtu.edu or 906-487-3055). We have integrated many features to provide you with a valuable learning experience at a cost effective price.

Michigan Tech MBA® Online featured in Businessweek

Posted by Lynn (Czarnecki) Makela under Tech MBA Online

The “new kid on the block” is getting noticed.

Michigan Tech’s online MBA was launched in fall of 2010 and is already getting good coverage from national sources. Bloomberg Businessweek’s web site has listed the program under its “Distance Learning” section.

“We are pleased to see our new Tech MBA® Online Program getting this well-deserved attention,” says School of Business and Economics Dean Darrell Radson.

The two-year Tech MBA® Online focuses on technology and innovation management. The degree incorporates a solid foundation of fundamental business disciplines including a global perspective. Training professionals to be ethical leaders who manage financially sound but sustainable organizations is also a program goal. Cohorted in design, the degree includes two weekend residencies and a week-long international residency.

According to Radson, “The uniqueness of our program centers on its connection to technology. We are using the expertise of our university and our business school to train students to take new ideas and concepts and move them into new products and new businesses. The goal of this MBA is to help our students become leaders who know how to implement good ideas, leading to innovative products or new innovations within companies. This, in turn, will help our economy succeed.”
