APMP: 2008 Back-to-Back National Champs!!!

The Michigan Tech Applied Portfolio Management Program (APMP) team returns from Dayton with its third first place finish. They were crowned Back-To-Back National Champions at the Eighth Annual RISE (Redefining Investment Strategy Education) Conference, the largest student investment conference in North America. The APMP won the “value” category with the highest risk-adjusted return for 2007 in the undergraduate division at the national investment competition.

Over 2300 participants, 267 universities and 69 countries were represented at this year’s competition. RISE is a student investment strategy symposium hosted by the University of Dayton. Modeled after the World Economic Forum, RISE connects investment students and faculty with Wall Street professionals in interactive discussions.

Representing the School of Business and Economics were Joel Pergolski, Brad Harry, Tony Hellenbrand, Mark Malekoff, Korey Capello, Lorn Randell, Kayla McCormick, and Kartikeya Srivastava. Associate Professor Dean Johnson is the Founding Director of the APMP.

At the formal dinner announcing them as the winner, the presenter commented “You have to respect Michigan Tech - 3 for 8!” Two of the students were selected to be on stage for the first ever remote Nasdaq Stock Market closing as well.

The APMP manages over $1 million in the equity and fixed income markets. APMP designated donations to the Michigan Tech Fund from alumni and friends provide support for student travel and scholarships. It’s Official. The SBE Has a New Dean!

Dr. Darrell Radson and his family visited the SBE February 15th and while here made it official. They are moving to Houghton from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.

In the presence of faculty and staff he signed the contract that makes him dean of the School of Business and Economics in August. The signing concludes a search that started in 2007 and promises to continue the growth of the School of Business and Economics. Dr. Radson’s academic and administrative experience fits nicely with the strategic goals of the SBE and Michigan Tech.

He received his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Northwestern University and his master’s and doctorate in Industrial and Operations Management from the University of Michigan. He served as associate dean in both the School of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Boler School of Business at John Carroll University, and is currently department head of the Department of Decision Sciences at LeBow College of Business at Drexel University.

His experience includes curriculum redesign, management of MBA programs and online degrees, AACSB accreditation, and successful recruitment of faculty and increased research.

PBL Takes 4th Place in One-Night Statue Building

Members from the SBE Phi Beta Lambda student organization, the SBE Marketing Club, and faculty members Jim Frendewey, Robert Mark, Dana Johnson, Maria Schutte, and Jim Gale participated in constructing a snow statue for Winter Carnival on February 6. The theme for statues this year was Frightful Creatures with Chilling Features. They started the SBE all-nighter snow statue at 4:00 pm and with their efficiency finished the work by 10:00 pm. The efforts were rewarded with a fourth place finish in the on-campus statues for student organizations (out of 11) in their division. The statue was titled “The Loch Ness Monster from Lake Superior Means Business”.

Board of Control Gives Final Approval to MBA Program

On June 22, 2006, Michigan Tech’s Board of Control approved the new MBA for the School of Business & Economics. A spin-off from the MSBA which was reintroduced in 2004, the new fast-track MBA will enable students to complete an MBA in one year.

“The program meets the demands of today’s fast-paced and technologically rich workplace,” said Dean Christa Walck, “and will make a significant contribution to Michigan Tech’s efforts to integrate business and technology. These MBAs will create the technology-driven businesses of the future.”

Dave Brule ‘72 donated $250,000 to support the new master’s program and additional donors have given or pledged $453,000.

The MBA targets undergraduate students with engineering, technology and science degrees. It adds a broad knowledge of business functions and business skills to give students a competitive advantage in the job market. The 36-credit program includes a core of business courses and 12 credits of electives that students can tailor to their interests.

Associate Professor Sonia Goltz was named director of graduate business programs on May 8. Goltz has a PhD from Purdue University in industrial psychology and has taught at Tech since 1996. Her research investigates the phenomenon of escalation of commitment (”throwing good money after bad”) and sex discrimination in the workplace.
