Study Abroad in Mexico or Canada !!

Apply Now – $5000 stipend – Study Abroad in Mexico or Canada !! Final Semester open for this program:  Spring 2013
Who can apply? All graduate and undergraduate students from any degree program at Michigan Tech

$5000? Each accepted student will receive $5000 for travel and living expenses – $2500 will be paid up front, and $2500 will be paid upon the student’s return.

Tuition? Students will pay their tuition at Michigan Tech, and current financial aid will work in the same way as if they were here.
Name of Program? SustR study abroad program (Sustainable Development for Rural Communities: Social, Health, Economic, and Environmental Advances)

Sponsor? U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE), North American Mobility in Higher Education Program

Deadline to apply? Contact Alex Mayer (asmayer@mtu.edu) or Carol Asiala (cjasiala@mtu.edu) ASAP to get on the SustR Study Abroad priority list.   Application package must be completed by: October 15, 2012 through the Michigan Tech International Programs and Services   How do I apply?
1.    Meet with Alex Mayer (asmayer@mtu.edu / 487-3372 / Office: Dow 809)

2.    Submit a 1-page Statement of Purpose for participation in the SustR program (guidelines at: http://www.geo.mtu.edu/~asmayer/sop.pdf) to Alex Mayer (asmayer@mtu.edu)

3.    Complete the Study Abroad application packet found on the International Programs and Services website: http://www.mtu.edu/international/study-abroad/apply/

4.    Once approved through IPS, a separate application provided by the study abroad university must also be filled out.

Gilman Scholarship Summer and Fall 2012 Application OPEN

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is happy to announce that the online application system is now open for students participating in study abroad programs during either the Summer 2012 or Fall 2012 or 2012-2013 Academic Year terms.  We anticipate this will be our most competitive cycle ever so please encourage your students to seek your guidance and utilize all available Gilman resources.  For more information about the Gilman Scholarship, webinar schedules, and other helpful resources please visit the Gilman website at www.iie.org/gilman.

Summer & Fall 2012 online applications are due March 1, 2012 by 11:59pm CST

For students applying for any academic term (Academic Year, Fall, Spring or Summer) please find the eligibility requirements below:

-Enrolled as an undergraduate student at a two or four-year U.S. Institution
-United States citizen
-Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
-Participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks (28 days) in one country and no more than an academic year
-Receiving academic credit
-Study in any country not currently under a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Cuba

Freeman-ASIA, which is sponsored by the Freeman Foundation
and administered by the Institute of International
Education, provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate
students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in
East or Southeast Asia. Applicants should have a minimum 2.8
GPA. The program’s goal is to increase the number of
Americans with firsthand exposure to and understanding of
Asia and its peoples and cultures. Awards of up to $3,000
are available for summer programs. Award recipients are
required to share their experiences with their home campuses
or communities to encourage study abroad by others.

Frontiers and Fortresses (Cumbria) – Study Abroad

For those of you who are not familiar with the study abroad program, Frontiers and Fortresses that I direct I want to introduce you to it today and for the others to remind you about it and for all to encourage you to come to a info session on either January 19, or February 9, both are between 5:30 and 6:30 in Fisher 132 to learn more.

For those who are unfamiliar Frontiers and Fortresses is a four week (Track B) study aboard program of MTU’s that is based that the University of Cumbria in Northern England.   Students study the archaeology, history and anthropology of England and Scotland and earn nine credits – three courses, SS 3560 History of England I, SS 3920 Archaeology of the North, and SS 3960 International Experience, all of these are HASS courses by the by.  The 2012 dates are July 4 – August 2.

Another nice thing about the program is that this year due to the generous support of the Provost we have been able to lower our program fee.    Last summer the fee was $3,800 this summer we are currently at 43,400 and if enrollment targets are reached it is possible it may drop to $3,100.  By way of comparison the most similar program run by another school – MSU – has a program fee of $4,800.

Invitation to Study Abroad from Michigan Tech to Mexico or Canada

Invitation to Study Abroad in Mexico and Canada

There is 1 position open for Study Abroad in Mexico and up to 3 positions open for Study Abroad in Canada with support from a Michigan Tech grant coordinated by PI Alex Mayer (CEE), and co-PIs Carol MacLennan (SS) and Blair Orr (SFRES), funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE), North American Mobility in Higher Education Program . The first applications submitted will receive the highest consideration for the program.

The SustR study abroad program (Sustainable Development for Rural Communities: Social, Health, Economic, and Environmental Advances) involves coursework at host universities tailored to students’ degree programs and a special rural sustainability seminar course.

We are recruiting graduate and undergraduate students from any degree program for the following semesters:

· Summer 2012 (needs special permission and extra arrangements)

· Fall 2012

Due dates through International Programs and Services are 3/1/2012 (Summer) and 4/1/2012 (Fall), but please contact Alex Mayer as soon as possible to begin planning for these semesters.

The project will provide $5000 per semester to cover Travel Expenses and a Living Allowance

Students pay tuition at Michigan Tech to attend one of the following Universities:
