In order to keep your department fees at a minimum, the advising office is not staffed in the summer and only limited academic advising services are offered.  If you have an issue that needs immediate attention during summer months, please call the Chemical Engineering Department office at 906-487-3132 or the Registrar’s Office at 906-487-2319.

Regular academic advising services resume on August 19th, two weeks before fall semester starts.  All new summer and fall incoming transfer students are required to meet with a department academic advisor during fall Orientation.

The advising office will reopen two weeks before fall semester starts on Monday, August 19th.  Walk-in office hours will be held for first-year and transfer students during Orientation week.  The days and times for the walk-in hours will be published in your Orientation book that you receive at the start of Orientation.

During the first two weeks of classes, from Tuesday, 9/3 through Wednesday, 9/11, I will be having walk-in office hours to assist students with finalizing their fall schedules.  No appointments are needed.  Individual appointments will be available for new transfer students, reinstated students, or other special cases.  If you need an appointment please email cmadvise@mtu.edu.

During the school year, if you have a quick question, registration problem, need a form, or don’t know where to go for something then you can stop by the Department Office (Chem Sci room 203) to see David Zei.  He is available Monday-Friday of most weeks.  No appointments are needed.

If you need help with schedule planning, minors, co-ops, study abroad, changing majors, or degree audits during the school year, then you will need to schedule an appointment with Katie Torrey (Chem Sci room 202M) using your Michigan Tech Google account (not available in the summer).  Advising appointments are usually 30 minutes long.  Appointments will not be available during busy times; instead, there are scheduled walk-in office hours during busy weeks, and no appointment is necessary.

Yes.  Please be prepared.  Before your appointment, take a look at your transcript on Banweb.  It is important that you know exactly what classes are on it.

Bring the following with you to your appointment:

1. The flowchart with classes crossed off that you’ve already completed and are currently taking.
2. A list of any classes on your transcript that you don’t know where they belong on the flowchart.
3. A list of classes that you plan to take next semester and beyond, even if it is a rough draft.  The semester planning worksheet will help with this.
4. Anything we worked on during previous appointments.
5. The folder containing advising handouts that you got during orientation or when you changed majors.

Copies of the advising handouts are also available on the department’s Advising Handouts webpage.  Appointments with an advisor may be made using the University email system.

The chemical engineering advising office is located in the Chemical Sciences Building (building 19) on the second floor, room 202M.  The advising office is open during the school year from mid-August through April.

Walk-in office hours, where no appointments are needed, are for students who need to make last minute adjustments to their schedule or who need assistance with registration for next semester.  They are held during peak advising times of the academic year, which are at the start of the semester (first and second week of classes) and during registration weeks (tenth week and eleventh week of classes).  Walk-in office hour times will be posted.  There are no summer walk-in office hours.

If you are looking for assistance with long term planning or need to complete a degree audit for graduation, we ask that you schedule an appointment for another time during the fall or spring semesters.
