This course addresses questions related to the ways in which the world’s population affects the environment and vice versa. We’ll critically address the idea that population growth is one of the biggest environmental problems. We’ll learn some basic demographic techniques for understanding population change. And, we’ll explore how climate change, weather, and natural disasters affect world populations. The course is offered at either the 3000-level or 5000-level. I hope to enroll a diverse group of grad students and upper level undergrads. Note: 5315 counts as a concentration course for EEP PhD program under either Environmental and Natural Resource Policy or Sustainable Development. The course will be taught every other spring.

This course addresses rural community sustainability using Calumet as a case study. The term “sustainability” is a broad one here and includes not only environmental sustainability, but also social, cultural, economic, and health. The course will involve a community based participatory research project where students will collaborate with a community organization (Main Street Calumet) to assess how Calumet’s First Fridays Art Tours contribute to community well-being. I hope to recruit students from across campus and would love to see registration among art students (or those with an interest in art register); those with interests in sustainability broadly speaking; those with historical/cultural/heritage interest, especially in the Copper Country; and those with interest in community development and/or rural areas. Course size will be limited, so if you are interested, please register early.
