Combine Sections, Access Bb Content, & Publish your Course

Canvas is Michigan Tech’s new Learning Management System (LMS).  You can log into Canvas at courses.mtu.edu, and access information about Canvas at the Canvas One Stop page .  All the tools you have used on the Course Tools page at coursestools.mtu.edu, like the Combine Canvas Sections tool and grade submission links, are still there and functioning with Canvas.

Accessing old Blackboard courses migrated into Canvas

Your new, blank Canvas courses for teaching Fall 2012 classes will be on the top of your Courses list in Canvas, and you can access your old Blackboard (Bb) courses migrated into Canvas from your Canvas Courses list too.  Hover over your Courses (or Courses & Groups) menu, and then click on View all courses at the very bottom.  Your old Bb courses will be on the bottom of that list, under “Past Enrollments.” Video Demo: Find your Bb Courses in Canvas. You’ll find the migrated version of your Bb Home Page by clicking on Pages from the menu on the left.  Other course content will migrate as referenced in this Conversion Chart.  To use that content, you’ll want to copy it into another Canvas course.  See How do I import content from another Canvas course?

Publishing your Canvas Course

Finally, you will need to Publish your Canvas course in order for your students to be able to see and access it.  See How do I publish my course? for directions on publishing your course.  It only takes a couple of clicks! For more information or help with Canvas at Michigan Tech, visit the Canvas One Stop page.

New Canvas Workshop: Canvasing Your Migrated Blackboard Course

The eLearning staff in the Center for Teaching and Learning is offering a new workshop for instructors who would like to use migrated Blackboard content in their courses in Canvas, the university’s new learning management system (available at courses.mtu.edu). At this time, you now have two types of new IT-generated Canvas courses: official Fall Semester courses and courses with content migrated from your old Blackboard courses.

Instructors can elect to build their courses from scratch or use their migrated Blackboard content. If you had a lot of content in your Blackboard courses (such as quizzes, assignments and files for example) and would like to use this migrated content in Canvas courses, this may be a helpful workshop for you. This workshop will help you start using your migrated Blackboard content as quickly and easily as possible.

In this hands-on workshop, you will:

  • Locate migrated courses in Canvas that contain Blackboard content
  • Find Blackboard content within your Canvas migrated courses
  • Learn how certain types of Blackboard course content are converted into Canvas course content
  • Import Blackboard content from within a Canvas migrated course into a new Canvas course
  • Begin linking files and other content to pages and modules within your Canvas course

The first workshop for Canvasing Your Migrated Blackboard Course will be held on Tuesday, August 14 from 10 to 11am. Please note that we recommend that you attend one of eLearning’s Canvas 101 workshops before you continue building your courses in Canvas.

Please refer to the Upcoming Workshops post in this eLearning blog (http://blogs.mtu.edu/elearning) for information and date/times for all Canvas workshops, which are taught by eLearning instructors Tom Freeman, Jeff Toorongian and Jeannie DeClerck.
