First Annual Enterprise Award Winners Announced

The Enterprise Program Office and the Enterprise Student Advisory Board are pleased to announce the first annual Enterprise Award winners. The Enterprise Awards were developed to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts and accomplishments of Enterprise students, faculty, staff, and sponsors.

Student Awards:

An awards committee comprised of faculty and staff involved in the Enterprise Program reviewed nominations and selected winners based on how well they supported the given award criteria. Award recipients received a framed award certificate, lapel pin, and $100 cash prize (sponsors received a University memento in lieu of cash). Award winners, as well as nominees, were announced and presented at the conclusion of the Design Expo last Thursday, April 19.

More than 1000 students in Enterprise and Senior Design showcased their work last Thursday, April 19 at Design Expo. Judges include corporate representatives, community members and Michigan Tech staff and faculty. Enterprise students, advisors, faculty and staff can nominate deserving candidates by submitting this nomination form. Nominations must be submitted by 5pm on Friday, March 30. Nominators may collect up to three letters of support from others to strengthen their nomination. Each support letter should be no longer than one page, single-spaced. Student nominees must be currently enrolled in the Enterprise Program in order to be considered for an award.

Spring 2018 Enterprise Scholarship Applications are now Open!

The Enterprise Program has two scholarship opportunities available for students below.

Carnahan Enterprise Scholarships: The Enterprise Program is now accepting Spring 2018 applications for the Carnahan Enterprise Scholarship. This scholarship is open to Business and Humanities majors who enroll in the Enterprise Program. Please review the scholarship description and application form for details. The deadline for applications is 5pm Friday March 2 (week 7).
Enterprise ‘Above and Beyond’ Scholarships: The Enterprise Program is now accepting Spring 2018 applications for the ‘Above and Beyond’ Scholarship. Formerly the ‘Super Senior’ scholarship, this scholarship has been expanded and aims to recognize Enterprise students whose participation in their team goes above and beyond the norm. The description, eligibility, and application can be found here: EnterpriseScholarshipDoc2. Note the deadline for Spring 2018 is Wednesday January 24 (Week 2).

ArcelorMittal Steel Warehouse Program

“Steel Warehouse”

ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer and a sponsor of numerous enterprise and senior design project teams at Michigan Tech. To support a wider range of project teams, ArcelorMittal conceived the “Steel Warehouse” concept to supply steel to student teams throughout the Michigan Tech campus. This program is managed by the Enterprise Program Office in the Pavlis Honors College.

Any enterprise or senior project team may request steel (and only steel) for their project.
To enable support of many teams across campus, requests are limited to $500. Requests > $500 may be considered for approval, depending upon availability of funds and total number of requests received.

**NOTE: The approval and ordering processes have changed.**

2nd Annual 3D Printed Aircraft Competition: Registration Deadline Jan. 31

Graduate and undergraduate individuals and teams from all universities are invited to participate in the 2^nd Annual 3D Printed Aircraft Competition hosted at the University of Texas at Arlington. Dates and prize details are provided below and in the attached flyer. Rules and online entry are available at www.uta.edu/mae/events.php

Fifth Annual Rekhi Innovation Challenge Underway

The fifth annual Rekhi Innovation Challenge kicked off on November 10th. Three Enterprise teams are competing for funding this year: Blue Marble Security, BoardSport Technologies, and Velovations. The Rekhi Challenge is a crowdfunding competition to help promote and support student innovation and entrepreneurship through Michigan Tech’s crowdfunding site, Superior Ideas. The team that raises the most money will receive a monetary match of up to $5,000. Monetary awards for total number of unique visitors, total number of unique funders, most social media engagement, most creative marketing plan, and the first team to raise $1,000 will also be presented to teams at the conclusion of the competition.

Superior Ideas was established in 2012 to help bring university research and public service projects to life. The site uses crowdfunding to raise money and awareness for university research and public service projects that may not qualify for grant funding. The Rekhi Innovation Challenge was developed in collaboration with the Enterprise Program Office and the Vice President for Research Office with support from Michigan Tech alumnus and longtime donor Kanwal Rekhi. Rekhi, a Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur, earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Tech in 1969.

Enterprise teams that have participated in past challenges include Innovative Global Solutions, Robotics Systems, Supermileage Systems, Aerospace, Blizzard Baja, GEAR and Open Source Hardware. Velovations took first place in the last competition with $2,550 in donations and a match of $2,550 from Rekhi, bringing the grand total to $5,100 in funding for their RENEW-U project. RENEW-U is an ergometer for wheelchair users to exercise upper-extremity muscles in order to improve strength and mobility. Over the last four years, the Rekhi Innovation Challenge has provided over $58,000 in support for 23 different student projects, attracting 267 unique donors.

For this year’s Rekhi Innovation Challenge, Blue Marble Security Enterprise is raising money to reach out to various community members and groups to increase interest in STEM fields among middle and high school students, particularly women. BoardSport Technologies wants to develop a SmartBoard that will track snowboarders via GPS and REECO location to ensure a speedy rescue if caught in an avalanche or lost. Velovations Enterprise is working with a local trails club to design and build a multi-purpose trail groomer with modular parts that can be swapped in the field to accommodate varying conditions.
