On the Road – Mayer

Assistant Professor Audrey Mayer presented work on information theory and sustainable landscapes in a symposium on Coupled Human And Natural Systems (CHANS) at a meeting of the International Association of Landscape Ecology in Newport, Rhode Island, this week. Azad Henareh Khalyani, a PhD candidate in forest science, presented a poster on his remote-sensing work on a protected area in northwestern Iran.

Assistant Professor Audrey Mayer
Assistant Professor Audrey Mayer, who holds a joint appointment in the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science  and the Department of Social Sciences, was quoted in a news story in the biweekly magazine Science News, commenting on two papers in the journal Science that examined the factors that influence the shift from forests to grasslands. Science published a Perspectives column by Mayer about the research in the same issue of Science. See Trees.

Audrey Mayer – Junior Faculty Enhancement Award

Assistant Professor Audrey Mayer was recently awarded a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Audrey will be working with Dr. Virginia Dale at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Professor Mark Rouleau of the Social Sciences department, on a computer simulation modeling project titled “Regional-scale impacts of bioenergy and carbon sequestration policies for nonindustrial private forests in Michigan and Tennessee.”

ESC Announces Fall Travel Grants

The Ecosystem Science Center has announced the recipients of its 2010 Fall Graduate Student Travel Grants. Following is the list of recipients and their advisors.

  • Sinan Abood, Environmental Engineering (Ann Maclean, SFRES) received $500 to attend and instruct a special session at the ASPRS/CaGIS 2010 Fall Specialty Conference in Orlando, Fla., from Nov. 15-19.
  • Ruth Bennett, Applied Ecology (Joseph Bump, SFRES) received $421 to attend the XIV Congreso de la Sociedad Mesoamericana para le Biologia y la Conservacion in San Jose, Costa Rica, from Nov. 8-12.
  • Marcella Campione, Forestry (Linda Nagel, SFRES) received $500 to present a poster at the Society of American Foresters National Convention in Albuquerque, N.M., from Oct. 27-31.
  • Nan Davis, Forestry (Robert Froese, SFRES) received $500 to present a poster at the Society of American Foresters National Convention in Albuquerque, N.M., from Oct 27-31.
  • Kevyn Juneau, Forestry (Catherine Tarasoff, SFRES) received $500 to give a talk at the MN/WI Invasive Species Conference in St. Paul, Minn., from Nov. 8-10.
  • Laura Kangas, Applied Ecology (Rodney Chimner, SFRES) received $500 to give a talk at the Wetlands in the Landscape Meeting of the Wisconsin Wetland Association, in Baraboo, Wisc., from Feb. 16-17.
