Houghton: A Look at How Scientists Study the Great Lakes


The Michigan Tech Great Lakes Research Center will partner with Portage District Library to host a special science program that will pique students interest in the Great Lakes and what lives there.

The program is scheduled for 6-9 pm, Tuesday, July 1, and will begin at the Library. Participants will ride the Agassiz to the Great Lakes Research Center where they’ll visit a laboratory to use microscopes to peer at the water and dissect a fish stomach to find out what they eat! At the completion of the lab, students & adults will travel by MTU van back to the library where there will be more to do!

Station Activities
Station 1: Library Book activity (all ages) – Library staff Community Room of Library

Station 2: Remotely-Operated Vehicle (all ages) – Dollar Bay High School SOAR Outside on dock

Station 3: Scientific Excursion on Agassiz (7 & up; 14 youth & adults) Board at dock by Library
Agassiz departure times (arrive 15 min. early): 6:00, 6:45, 7:30, 8:15 pm
OR Boat-Making at library (all ages) – Library staff Swimming pool on lawn outside

Station 4: Visit to MTU Great Lakes Research Center Lab to view plankton w/ microscope; dissect fish stomachs; sediment/Diporeia) Agassiz will drop off youth & adults at the Lab. Lab participants will return to library via MTU van (12-passenger van + 7-passenger mini-van).
