Volunteer Opportunity

International Programs and Services is looking volunteers to help welcome new international students to campus. We need drivers to pick up students form the airport, take students shopping and orient them to their new home. Plus, this a great way for you to meet new friends!

  1. Hello Hank and Pat

Thank you for your message. We do not provide a service to match students with local community members and can’t endorse at this time. However, there are a few options I can suggest that would be a good opportunity for you to meet international students.

The Canterbury House hosts an ethnic dinner every Wednesday that is prepared by international students and anyone is welcome to attend.

The Canterbury House offers many programs for students. It is a great place for students to hang out, receive help with English language reading and writing, watch movies, play games, have a meal and make new friends. They are located across from the Michigan Tech Administration Building and you can find them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/canterburymtu. Feel free to contact them if you are interested in helping with events and tutoring.

Khana Khazana is a weekly international lunch cooked by international students and is served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays in the Memorial Union Food Court. A full meal costs $6.95 and includes a beverage. Individual items are available for $2.50 each.

Khana Khazana is a collaboration of international students and Dining Services. View a video about the lunch on the Michigan Tech Dining web page: http://www.mtu.edu/dining/

Another suggestion is attend an event at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (next to MTU). There are a great number of international students that attend this church and you can find them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gs.lutheran

I hope I was able to answer your question. Please feel free to let me know if you have other questions.
    Mary
