Central Storage Maintenance and Potential Unavailability

WHAT is going on:

Please be advised that IT Infrastructure Services will be conducting central storage maintenance to continue to improve the stability and performance of the storage systems.  This maintenance may cause brief intermittent outages of access to central storage, so please attempt to minimize utilizing your home directory or network file shares during the maintenance window described below.

WHEN it will happen:

The scheduled storage maintenance will be from Friday May 9, 2014 at 8:00pm to Saturday May 10, 2014 at 8:00am.

WHY are we doing this:

The performance and stability of the new central storage system is our top concern.  We sincerely feel that you – the faculty, staff, and students – deserve the most affordable, stable, versatile, and highly-performing storage system available.  IT management and staff have been working closely with our storage vendor and together we have developed a detailed quality improvement plan.  This maintenance window will allow us to implement the many improvements in this plan with the least amount of negative impact on users.

WHOM will this affect:

The storage system undergoing maintenance affects all campus home directories, most academic and research shares, and most administrative data.  All students, staff, and faculty may see intermittent access loss to their home directories during this maintenance window. This maintenance will not affect storage attached to the Superior High Performance Cluster nor any other locally-attached storage.

Campus Home Directory Upgrade Scheduled over Thanksgiving Holiday

November 29, 2013, 3:00PM – The campus home directories upgrade is now complete. Computers are now available for use. If you have any questions or problems, please contact IT at it-help@mtu.edu or 906-487-1111. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Michigan Tech IT will be upgrading campus home directories over the Thanksgiving Holiday break. The outage period for these upgrades is scheduled for Thursday November 28th , 7:00PM through Sunday December 1st, 11:00PM.

This upgrade will enhance the performance of campus home directories and increase the flexibility of research data storage. During the upgrade, any computer that requires a Michigan Tech ISO username and password will not be available for use. This includes, but is not limited to: campus labs, Library computers, office computers, and classroom podium computers. In addition to campus home directories, the Multidrive (or M drive) will also be unavailable during the upgrade.

Please make sure you have saved your work and are logged out of your Michigan Tech ISO account prior to the upgrade start time (November, 28, 2013 at 7:00PM).

Throughout the upgrade process, IT will post updates here on the blog and on the IT status page at: http://status.it.mtu.edu.

Husky-bw printer upgrade coming on November 25

Michigan Tech IT will be upgrading the current Kyocera (husky-bw) printers with high capacity/high efficiency Xerox WorkCentre 7855 printers to better meet the increased printing load on campus.

This upgrade will take place on November 25, 2013 from 7:00AM – 11:00AM. This upgrade does not affect the color printers, which will still be available for use during this time.

After the upgrade is complete, the following locations will only have a color printer but have the functionality to print from both husky-color and husky-bw queues:

  • AOB G004
  • Dow 7th floor
  • EERC Lobby
  • Fisher 232
  • M&M U203

When printing to the husky-bw queue on these dual-queue machines, students will not be charged. Any job sent to the husky-color queue will incur the standard color printing charge.

Huskymail upgrade postponed

The Huskymail upgrade scheduled to happen on Aug. 27th has been postponed until Thanksgiving break.

Multiple parties have provided feedback that an email downtime right before classes began would inconvenience faculty, staff and students as they prepare for the beginning of the term. IT has decided to reschedule the upgrade until Thanksgiving break, which is the next window of opportunity for this upgrade. We will send further information in November about the timing of this upgrade.


Huskymail to be upgraded to version 6

UPDATE: Upgrade postponed till Thanksgiving break; please read this notice

On Saturday, August 27, 2011, Information Technology will be upgrading the major software components of our campus email system, Huskymail. We are performing this upgrade to provide additional and updated email and calendaring features, and to fix several long-standing bugs.

This upgrade requires an outage which will begin at 8:00 PM on Saturday, August 27 and is expected to last for 8 hours, until 4:00 AM on August 28th. During this time, the Huskymail web client (http://huskymail.mtu.edu) and all ActiveSync, IMAP, POP, and Outlook clients will be unable to connect. Incoming messages will be queued on our servers and delivered at the end of the outage: no incoming messages will be lost.

Home Directory Move for Physics, Math and Computer Science

Home directories for Physics, Math and Computer Science users are being integrated into central storage starting this Saturday, August 13th, at 10:00pm. The integration involves an 8 hour-long file synchronization between storage shares, and a subsequent reconfiguration of servers and services to point to the new storage paths.

The integration will bring these home directories in alignment to the rest of the home directories on campus;  after the move is done, users in the three departments involved will have the same user experience on any computer they log in on campus, with the same set of home directories, networked drives, etc. available to them no matter what campus resource they log into.

The move will also integrate the accounts in these departments into the campus-wide Identity Management System.

The maintenance period is scheduled to be completed by 4:00pm on Sunday, August 14th. During this window, users are asked to terminate any background process that may be writing to their home directories, and log off any systems they may be logged into. After the maintenance window, User Services staff will be monitoring our issue management system in order to respond to any (however unlikely) problems caused by this integration.
