The Department of Mechanical Engineering–Engineering Mechanics celebrated the December 2013 Fall Semester graduating class Senior Awards Banquet and Order of the Engineer Induction on December 10, 2013 at the Memorial Union Ballroom. Timothy P. Coffield was the keynote speaker for the December 2013 ME-EM Senior Awards Banquet. However, transportation to Michigan Tech was affected by a winter storm causing flight cancellations. So he spoke to the banquet by way of the internet.

Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering Senior Awards Banquet December 2013: Tyler Sierakowski
Tyler has been involved with the HEV Enterprise for several years, taking on roles of increasing responsibility that ultimately led to a seat on the executive leadership team. His leadership and calm demeanor has enabled the Enterprise to make progress on its hybrid electric vehicle project, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable issues. He is a skilled project manager and has taken the lead in maintaining communications among the 40 students on the team, which is certainly not an easy task. Recognizing the importance of continuity of leadership, Tyler has been quietly mentoring several members of the Enterprise, one of which will likely take his place next semester. We will miss his smile and wit, but all know that the team has benefited greatly because of his involvement.
Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering Senior Awards Banquet December 2013: Josh Quintel
Josh understands how to get a group working, his groups are always known for creativity and meeting their deadlines. Josh does not believe anything until it is tested – he understands the important role of prototyping in product development and forces a team through a maximum of iterations. Mostly, Mr. Quintel’s groups are punctuated by laughter and success. That all comes from him. Josh leaves in his wake 2-3 projects that he had the lead/major role in that are or will be sitting on shelves in stores around the world.
Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering Senior Awards Banquet December 2013: Gabi Elser
Gabi Elser immediately became an invaluable member of FSAE by accepting the role of Business and Marketing Leader at her first team meeting. Gabi changed the culture of the team by organizing promotional, recruiting, and social events for the team. Under her guidance, FSAE published professional-quality newsletters to inform sponsors and alumni of team progress. Most importantly, Gabi kept the team finances in order. Gabi volunteered for assignments and perfectly executed every one. We do not know what we will do without her!
Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering Senior Awards Banquet December 2013: Steve Noha
Steve was part of the Bissell Deep Cleaner Lift-Off Pod Battery Accessory team. He has taken the initiative and perseverance to see a project through. Among his work achievements were selecting and sizing of the inverter used in the project, constructing the battery packs, designing and implementing the cycle testing equipment, and identifying a solution to an inrush current problem which might have required major redesign. He was a great asset to his team while remaining a team player.
Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering Senior Awards Banquet December 2013: Eric Volk
Eric Volk demonstrated extraordinary commitment to his Capstone Project and supporting Achilles athletes. Eric drove team progress through his zealous use of whiteboards to track assignments and deadlines. His “can do” attitude was demonstrated by personally transporting materials from Wisconsin to L’Anse and Baraga in order to meet deadlines. Eric plans to extend his commitment to support Achilles athletes at future events.
