I hope you’re all having a great week.
The weather in Houghton these past few weeks has been very bright and sunny, and it’s been great for students as they take advantage of the outdoor winter activities that we have here. Some of the most popular activities include downhill skiing and snowboarding at Mont Ripley or Mount Bohemia in Copper Harbor, cross country skiing and snowshoeing on the Michigan Tech Trails, and even winter camping! The weather has been great for the month-long snow statues for Winter Carnival as well, and they seem to be coming together quite nicely as the final building week approaches! I’m excited to see how they turn out for the All-Nighter next week.
In addition, this week marked the first annual Medical Careers Week, where health professionals across the UP have come and are giving various presentations and symposiums to aspiring medical professionals here at Michigan Tech. Starting Monday, January 26 and concluding Friday, January 30, Medical Informatics Day, Allied Health/Medical Laboratory Sciences Day, Medical Careers Day, and Medical Device Day will all be celebrated. Events including five different Lunch-and-Learns, presentations on career preparation, a symposium on the future of medical devices, plus many more activities took place throughout the entire week.
Complementing Medical Careers Week, the Spring Career Fair will be coming up on Tuesday, February 17, and there are a plethora of preparatory events being hosted by the Career Services Center to help your students get ready. Tickets for the Business Etiquette Dinner, which will take place on Monday, February 16, are now on sale for a cost of $10. The purpose of this event is to teach students how to dine appropriately with companies in a professional setting. Sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers, this event will also host a variety of representatives from companies attending the career fair, which gives students a leg up on both networking and learning about the details of each specific company. Tickets can be purchased at the Career Services Center.
Additionally, the Career Services Learning Center will be having extended hours as the career fair comes closer and closer. Walk in hours are Monday through Thursday from 1:00 pm – 6:30 pm, and thirty minute appointments will take place Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.
In addition these exciting events, we also have a variety of home athletics games these next few weeks for Michigan Tech athletics.
Home Men’s and Women’s basketball against Northland on January 29
Home hockey vs. Alabama Huntsville on January 30 and 31
Home Men’s and Women’s basketball vs. Lake Superior State University on January 31
Home hockey vs. Bemidji State on February 6 and 7
Home Men’s and Women’s basketball against Northern Michigan on February 2
The Huskies have been doing extremely well in these sports this season, with the hockey Huskies having a record of 18-7-1, Men’s basketball having a record of 13-4, and most impressively with Women’s basketball having a record of 16-1. I highly recommend you to encourage yours students to go out and support their Huskies these next few weeks!
That’s all I have for you this week! If you have any questions about any of the events that I mentioned or would like to see more written on a specific topic, please feel free to email me at email@example.com. Until next week!
