Times for the shifts are from:

11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

•    Wear clothing that is neat and appropriate (no holes, no hats, and no sunglasses are permitted).
•    Wear comfortable, closed toe shoes (athletic shoes recommended).

•    Arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in at the Wadsworth Hall Reception Desk in order to get to your assigned location on time for the start of your shift.

Comedian Pete Lee – Saturday, August 25 at 9 PM in the Rozsa
Looking for a fun Saturday night activity? Look no further! Join Late Night Programming and Orientation for the first comedian of the year, Pete Lee! The fun starts on Saturday, August 25th at 9 PM at the Rozsa Center. Bring your friends!
As always, this Late Night event is free and funded by the Student Activities Fee.Pete Lee picturePete Lee might be the nicest person in New York City, but that’s because it’s impossible to sound aggressive with a Wisconsin accent. Pete was raised in Janesville, WI by divorced parents and a 19-inch television, which is probably why he pursued a career in entertainment. Thanks to his highly rated Comedy Central Presents half hour special, Pete has packed venues at over 500 colleges and universities across the country. Pete has also been a standout on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and played a doctor on the CBS soap opera As the World Turns. His hit YouTube series titled Pete Lee’s Internet Freak Show attracted the attention of television executives. He was quickly hired to be a writer and cast member on FUSE TV’s Video on Trial and cast member on VH1’s Best Week Ever. Pete is a rising star in the college market and on television, but he is also really fun to have dinner with at your town’s Applebee’s.

Comedian Sammy Obeid – Saturday, September 1 at 10 PM in the Rozsa

Lebanese-Palestinian-Syrian-Italian American (try saying it really fast) Sammy knows a lot about mixin’ it up. After double majoring in Business and Math at UC Berkeley — which is why he does comedy now — Obeid blends his education with his love for being the life of the party, breaking down hip, trending topics until you laugh your abs into a six-pack. Voted “Fastest Rising Star” of 2014 in Campus Activities Magazine, SaComedian Sammy Obeid EDS picturemmy has appeared on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, America’s Got Talent, TBS’s Conan, and often likes to remind strangers that he was the first comedian to ever tell jokes on the Food Network. In 2013, he may have even impressed his parents by setting a world record of performing comedy 1,001 consecutive nights, with his story featured in Time and The New York Times. And then he took a nap.

Come join us on Saturday, September 1 at 10 pm in the Rozsa Center!
This event is free and brought to you by Late Night Programming and Orientation.

Tech Theatre Presents “When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder”

Tech Theatre presents When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder, a play by Mark Medoff. The employees and customers of Foster’s Diner in Hope, New Mexico, 88250, experience a terrorizing examination their personal desires and dreams when Teddy, a disillusioned biker, calls them on living in made-up worlds. The play will run Thursday – Saturday, for two weeks, Thursday, February 22 -Saturday, February 24, and Thursday, March 1 – Saturday, March 3, at 7:30 pm each night, in the McArdle Theatre.

It’s time to start thinking about Winter Carnival 2018!

The theme this year is “Myths and Tales of the Past, in our Frigid Forecast”.

If you are planning on participating in Winter Carnival,  please join our Winter Carnival Email list for any and all updates regarding Winter Carnival.

In order to join follow this link:

https://groups.google.com/a/mtu.edu/forum/#!forum/wintercarnival-l

  1.  Click the blue button that says “Join group to post”.
  2. Click “Join this group”.

There are also a few changes we would like to highlight for this year:

Window painting event has been replaced with “Banner Painting”.  The banners will then be hung in business windows in downtown Houghton during January and February.  A major change with this new event is that banners will need to be completed by December 15th in order for businesses to have adequate time to receive and display the banners.  Additional details regarding the event are listed in the rulebook.  Applications for the event close Friday, November 3rd and can be accessed here.

Due to declining participation, the interactive statue competition will no longer be a judged event. Organizations wishing to build statues that require participant interaction are encouraged to do so by opting into the category on the month-long statue application. Any questions regarding this change can be directed to bkstatues@mtu.edu.

The final Stage Revue event held in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, February 7th will be free for all students thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Inter-Residence Housing Council (IRHC).  A valid student ID must be brought to the event for student admission.

Lastly, attached is a PDF copy of the Rulebook for Winter Carnival 2018.  All relevant dates to events, registrations, and meetings can be found there.

You can also find a copy of the Rulebook on Blue Key’s Involvement Link page, as well as on the Carnival website at: https://www.mtu.edu/carnival/

At this time, here are some upcoming dates and times for the next couple of weeks.

  • Entry forms for Banner Painting go live Monday, October 30 and close on Friday, November 3.
  • Entry forms for Queens go live November 3 at 8:00 am and close on November 17 at 5:00 pm.
  • Entry forms for Stage Revue will be available online starting October 27, and must be submitted by November 17 at 5:00pm.
  • Entry forms for Month-Long Statues go live November 11 at 8:00am and close on December 6 at 5:00pm.
  • An Open Forum and Lottery for Month-Long statues will be held on November 9 at 5 pm in Fisher 138.  Priority for Themes and Snow Statue Locations will be determined at this meeting. If you want priority for your location and theme, you must be present at this lottery. Only one representative from your organization needs to be present.

I hope that everyone is just as excited as we are for Winter Carnival 2018!

Please contact bluekey@mtu.edu for any questions or concerns. ”

The University is conducting a campus-wide survey to find out what it’s like to work, live, and learn at Michigan Tech. The survey – called the Michigan Tech Assessment of Working, Living, and Learning – will help the University better understand the current climate at Michigan Tech, and how all members of our community experience it.

Creating and maintaining a community environment that respects individual needs, abilities, and potential is critically important. The assessment is designed to provide the administration with information about both positive and challenging aspects of life at Michigan Tech. It’s your opportunity to describe your personal experiences, your observations, and to offer suggestions for change that might enhance the campus climate.

The goals of the project are to: 1) identify successful initiatives, 2) uncover any challenges facing members of our community, and 3) develop strategic initiatives to build on the successes and address the challenges.

This research has been reviewed and approved by the Michigan Tech Institutional Review Board. Additional information about the project is available here.

You are encouraged to take the time to answer the questions by going to mtu.edu/worklivelearn. Completing the survey takes an average of 20 to 30 minutes, but it could take longer depending on your responses. All of your answers will remain confidential and the results will be reported in group form only. You will not be identifiable as an individual.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this vital project.

Alternative Energy Enterprise

Sustainable Demonstration House:

Open House

Wednesday, November 1st from 4pm-6pm

The objective of the Sustainability Demonstration House (SDH) project is to retrofit the Kettle Gundlach building for energy, water, and gas efficiency. AEE is using the house to share sustainability with students, faculty and the public and share our experience with those who may be looking to improve the sustainability of their own homes. In 2016, AEE partnered with Superior Ideas to spread public awareness of the Sustainability Demonstration House project. The house is undergoing long-term efficiency analysis so it can be seen how the changes improved its sustainability. These results are planned to be published through our partnerships with groups on campus and in the community.

Throughout this project, AEE has been able to work with important organizations and numerous highly motivated individuals. Working alongside the Director of Sustainability at Michigan Tech, the ETEC enterprise, the MTU Social Science department, and various individuals around the Keweenaw Peninsula has helped drastically with the forward progress of this community project. Our approach with this project is to get the community as involved as possible. We continue to reach out to others in the area who would desire to be a part in the project. Full information on the SDH project can be found on Superior Ideas: http://www.superiorideas.org/projects/sustainable-demonstration-house

Learn about sustainability, see the house and meet the tenants at our OPEN HOUSE on November 1, 2017 from 4pm-6pm.

The house is located at 21680 Woodland Dr.

HuskyLEAD – Strengths Series

Join Dr. Scott Marratto, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Michigan Technological University, on Wednesday, November 1 from 4-5pm in MUB Ballroom B1 for his presentation on Morality and Technology: Rethinking Engineering Ethics. Dr. Marratto’s discussion will conclude the Fall 2017 HuskyLEAD workshops; however, individuals are still encouraged to check out the HuskyLEAD-Strengths Series opportunities still happening.

Morality and Technology: Rethinking Engineering Ethics

Traditional approaches to engineering ethics stress the application of professional codes of ethics to real-world problems. The mainstay of education in this approach is the case-study: the examination of real and hypothetical incidents (e.g., the space shuttle Challenger accident) with a view to drawing lessons about how ethical rules and procedures could, or should, have been applied. A number of ethicists and philosophers of technology have raised critical questions about this approach. For one thing, it involves a very limited understanding of ethics and ethical conduct, one which focusses on decision-making in the face of a problem rather than on ethical dispositions, professional formation, character, etc. Further, philosophers of technology have stressed the ethical and moral dimensions not just of our decisions concerning what to do with our technologies, but concerning the very design and structure of technical objects and systems. They have argued that ethics should be much more integrated into the education of engineers and designers. In this talk and discussion, we will consider some of these challenges and proposals for new approaches to engineering ethics.

Pistol Club Open Shoot

Due to the range at the SDC being temporarily closed, MTU Pistol Club is temporarily operating at the Portage Lake Sportsman Club. Because of this, we have to limit the number of people to 40 per day due to transportation. We are experimenting with this operation but currently we will work on a first come first serve basis.

We are required to provide tech insured transportation via a shuttle. The shuttle will be located at the lot behind OAP by Public Safety. and will run about every 30 minutes from 4-7 pm this Friday, and 1-4 on our Saturday and Sunday events with a final returning van at 8 and five respectively

We are operating on the following day:

Sunday October 29 1-5

We are unable to transport firearms in Tech Vehicles so if you would like to bring your own fire arm please come before the first shuttle and we will transport your firearm in an range safety officers  vehicle. If you are not comfortable with that then we encourage you to purchase a year long membership at Portage Lake Sportsman Club. For our event we will only allow pistols and .22 rifles.

If you want to bring a personal firearm, you must preregister as only one vehicle will be bringing firearms out there once each way.

All personal vehicles must be left at the library as the pick up spot is for public safety only.

For those of you who are interested at getting a membership, their yearly student membership fee is only $30 if paid in cash and $32 if paid through Pay Pal.

Here is a link for membership at Portage Lake Sportsman Club if you are interested:

http://www.portagelakeclub.org/membership.html

Please tell your friends to sign up as well. We will make sure your time is well spent! Also make sure to bring CASH for ammo and a $6 transportation/PLSC fee. We can not accept credit.

Because we are not hosting at our regular MTU range, there will be no membership fee for pistol club this semester.

Contact austinsm@mtu.edu if you have any questions.

We are operating on the following days

FRIDAY September 29 4-8

Saturday October 7 1-5

Sunday October 15 1.5

Saturday October 21 1-5

Faculty Present Listening to Parks, an NEA Imagine Your Parks Project

What do you hear when you walk in the woods? What are the natural sounds and rythms of the forest? The lakes? The skies? Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, opened a multimedia and soundscape installation at the Duluth Children’s Museum this week, on Monday, September 25, 2017, in Duluth, MN, as a part of their “Listening to Parks” project, to explore those questions. The exhibit will be on display through October 15. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Park Service (NPS) announced $1,067,500 in support of 50 grants in 27 states, including an award of $20,000 to Michigan Technological University to support Listening to Parks, an Imagine Your Parks project. Visual and sound artists collaborated to create an immersive multimedia installation based on collected images, video, and audio recordings from the Keweenaw National Historic Park, Isle Royale National Park, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The installation will tour to sites in the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan, and then will culminate in an exhibition in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in December. There will be an opening reception on Friday, December 2 from 5:00 -6:30 PM, which is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are M-F 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Fridays. The recorded sounds from this project will also be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra at the Rozsa Center on Saturday, December 9 at 7:30 PM.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu says “As part of the NEA’s 50th anniversary, this year we are celebrating the magnificence of America’s national cultural treasures through art, the Imagine Your Parks grant program unites our mission with the National Park Service by connecting art projects with the natural, historic and cultural settings of the National Park System and will inspire a new generation to

discover these Isle Royalespecial places and experience our great heritage.”  “The ‘Imagine Your Parks’ grants are really helping us celebrate the NPS Centennial and the NEA’s 50th Anniversary with some incredibly diverse and interesting projects that continue to inspire more Americans of all backgrounds to connect with their national parks,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “The grants already awarded are already demonstrating the success of the program through a variety of inspiring projects. A new generation of artists is connecting to national parks through their work, and motivating others to do the same.”

According to Dr. Jared Anderson, Chair, Department of Visual and Performing Arts, “I am very proud to announce that Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, received the first-ever award for Michigan Tech from the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Parks Service as a part of the “Imagine your Parks” initiative.  This project will consist of gathering soundscape recordings from Isle Royale National Park and other National Parks in this region.  The recorded sounds will then be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra.  The sounds will also be integrated into a traveling multi-media art installation that will be presented at various park visitors centers and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in 2017.”

Please visit the Listening to Parks website for more details.   Follow “Imagine Your Parks” on Twitter @NEAarts and @NatlParkService, #ImagineYourParks #NEASpring16.

Artist Exhibit at the Rozsa

Who owns the wind? The leaves on the trees? When a paper company cuts down a 75-year-old tree, or a landowner clears brush for a better view of the lake, how is an entire ecosystem affected? What ethical, cultural, and social questions are raised? Artist Katie Hargrave, a professor of art at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, who holds degrees in Painting, Intermedia, and Cultural Production, explores these questions in her exhibition, It’s nothing personal (space), opening at the Rozsa Center’s gallery A-Space, on Friday, September 22. “It’s nothing personal (space)” is an exploration of the competing ideas of ownership and stewardship as they relate to public and private land, trees and deserts, and individual and corporate voices. Inspired by a road trip to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, the site of militia protests during the winter of 2016, the exhibition includes fiber, audio, video, and drawings The September 22 opening includes a reception with the artist from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM. Hargrave will discuss her work at 5:30 PM. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public, and the show will remain open through November 11. Gallery hours are M – F 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, and Saturdays from 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Katie Hargrave, who was born in 1985 in Chicago and now resides in Chattanooga, TN, received a BFA from the University of Illinois, an MFA in Intermedia and Drawing from the University of Iowa, and an MA in museum studies and anthropology from Brandeis University. Her work has been shown at DIY spaces, commercial galleries, non-profits, and festivals, including the Manifesta Biennial in Murcia, Spain where she worked with activists to design bilingual tools for direct action; SPACES gallery in Cleveland, where she applied the framework of forest succession to city planning, and the Floating Library, a zine[1] collection on a boat in the Minneapolis lakes. Hargrave is a member of the collaborative groups “The Think Tank that has yet to be named” and “Like Riding a Bicycle.” For more information about Hargrave, please visit her website at http://www.katiehargrave.us/
