January is National Stalking Awareness Month

January is National Stalking Awareness Month and an opportune time to provide information in order to recognize and prevent stalking, including cyberstalking. Stalking refers to engaging in a menacing course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to: fear for their safety or the safety of others; or suffer substantial emotional distress. Signs of stalking can include unwanted phone calls, messages, letters or emails. People who stalk may also follow their victims or show up at class, work or home without invitations. It may also seem as though the person always knows the location of their victim. The Center for Disease Control reports 1 in 6 women and 1 in 17 men have been victims of stalking at some point in their lives. Though stalking affects millions every year, it is often misunderstood, minimized and/or ignored.
Cyberstalking involves the use of technology such as the internet, social media, or applications used to make someone fear for their safety. It is relatively easy for a cyberstalker to find out information about their victims online. Many of us share our locations, interests, private thoughts and personal photos on social media. A cyber stalker can easily keep tabs on their victim through social media accounts and use the information to harass and threaten their victims. For example, a cyberstalker may utilize Snapchat to find their victim’s location if their GPS is enabled. Cyberstalkers may also send unwanted messages, sometimes hundreds per day, terrorizing their victim and making them fear for their lives.
It is never the victim’s fault if they have been stalked or cyberstalked. There are some things you can do to protect yourself from cyberstalking. It is important to adjust privacy settings on all social media accounts. Only share content you post on social media with those that you trust. Additionally, always log out of applications and social media especially if you use a shared computer. Never share your passwords with anyone.
If you are concerned that you or someone you know may be a victim of stalking or cyberstalking, act. Don’t ignore it or downplay it. Don’t assume someone else will report. If you are made aware of potential stalking, it is important that any concerns are taken seriously and reported appropriately. Contact your supervisor or the Title IX Coordinator, Kirsti Arko. Michigan Tech ensures its faculty, staff and students a safe workplace and educational environment free from discrimination and harassment.

The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. This 2015 documentary film investigates who really pays the price for our clothing? The discussion facilitator will be Dr. Soonkwan Hong, Associate Professor of Marketing, MTU College of Business.
“This seemed like an appropriate film for January, after the consumption spree of the holidays!” explained Joan Chadde, film series coordinator, and Director of the Michigan Tech Center for Science & Environmental Outreach. “Dr. Hong is the perfect discussion facilitator for this film, given his interests in marketing ethics, sustainable lifestyles, and consumer behavior.”

Rozsa Center Presents a digital version of Class Acts with “Smart Art Bites”

The 2020-21 school year has been full of challenge, flexibility and innovation for students, educators and families. At the Rozsa we typically host performance field trips for K-5 classes through our Class Acts program, but this year we’ve brainstormed something different…and digital. Introducing Smart Art Bites! Smart Art Bites is a 5-episode digital series that offers bite-sized arts lessons for K-5 students, families and teachers to incorporate the arts into everyday learning. Each episode focuses on a different arts skill taught by a professional artist. We will be releasing new videos over the coming weeks, and we’ve partnered with the Portage Lake District Library to bring you reading lists tailored to each Smart Art Bites episode. Our first episode was released today, Tuesday, January 12, 2021. It can be viewed on the Rozsa Center Class Acts webpage: https://www.mtu.edu/rozsa/community/class-acts/

In our first Smart Art Bites episode Arthur “L.A.” Buckner teaches a beat using a low sound and high sound that you can play on objects in your home. Watch as L.A. jams out for a drum set performance and see how the beat evolves. This episode is streaming now on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/J_KOu9Au1gc

The Student Scoop – December 16, 2020

Rozsa Center Presents “Christmas Carol,” From Emmy-Award Winning Manual Cinema

In pandemic-times, the arts become even more creative: Direct to your home, the Rozsa Center brings an imaginative Christmas Carol blending innovative storytelling, puppetry, cinema, and live performance. Streaming Thursday – Sunday, December 17 – 20

The Rozsa Center brings original, creative, groundbreaking arts to the Keweenaw, whether audiences are in person or online. In that tradition, we are proud to host the world premiere live stream of Christmas Carol by Manual Cinema, an award-winning artistic company that has pushed the art and crafts of filmmaking, puppetry, and live performance in an exciting and breathtaking new artistic direction. In this world premiere online event created for audiences of all ages, interdisciplinary performance collective Manual Cinema takes on Charles Dickens’s holiday classic with a visually inventive adaptation made to broadcast directly to your home. There will be four (4) Live Showings only!  Each performance will only be live at the advertised times: Thursday, December 17 at 8:00 PM; Friday, December 18 at 8:00 PM; Saturday, December 19 at 4:00 PM; Sunday, December 20 at 4:00 PM. For tickets,  click here.

According to the Dec. 4th theater review by Chris Jones, of the Chicago Tribune, “Manual Cinema’s Christmas Carol” doesn’t begin with the image of Marley, dead to begin with, or even an nasty old miser headed home from his frigid counting house. It starts right where most of us currently live: Lysol canisters, Clorox wipes, pizza boxes, empty bottles of wine, computers standing in for humanity. For its 60-minute holiday show, which is “touring” nationally but actually streamed live every night from the company’s Chicago studio, this inventive group of artists has created, in essence, a COVID-19 ‘Christmas Carol.’”

Superior Wind Symphony Presents “Reparations 2,” a Virtual Concert

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and
Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents a virtual streamed video concert by the Superior Wind Symphony (SWS), titled “Reparations 2,” planned for Saturday, December 5, at 7:30 PM. Led by Michigan Tech’s director of bands Mike Christianson, the title surrounds the theme of “little-known and under-recognized Black American composers in history.” The concert will feature the Superior Wind Symphony in a streamed video concert of music by all African-American composers from the 1700’s to the present.

According to Christianson, “Our concer, the second in a series of four that will be performed along the theme of “Reparations,” will feature music, played in a somewhat socially distanced way by the members of the Superior Wind Symphony, that represents the music of black and other minority composers who have not received either the attention or recognition of white composers. This music will be from roughly 1700 to now, and will all be wonderful, whether you’ve heard of the composers or not. Concerts will be made available via online video streams, as they are ready.”
This concert is free and open to the public, and the link can be accessed on the Rozsa Center website.
For more details, please contact Mike Christianson, D.M.A., Associate Professor, Director of Bands, Michigan Technological University, mchristi@mtu.edu, 906-487-2825 (off.).

On December 7th at 7pm via Zoom, the Railroad Engineering and Activities Club will be hosting our final presentation of the semester. After the presentation, we will be holding officer elections, so if you have attended a meeting at all this semester, we need you to help vote! How to Help a Friend – Suicide Prevention Training

Awkward Silence Presents: Seize the Awkward | Friendship & Mental Health

One of the best things about Michigan Tech is that we’re such a tight-knit community, and the thing that comes with a tight community is caring about those in our community. If you’re part of a student org., especially if you have a leadership position, you’re probably pretty concerned with ways to help your friends – especially with how stressful school + coronavirus can be. Heck, even if you aren’t in a leadership position, you probably want to learn better ways to help friends in need. But… conversations about mental health can feel awkward, intimidating and sometimes like you’re even crossing a line. When you seize the awkward ( <– check out that link, it’s super helpful) of these difficult conversations, it can be helpful to have a little training to rely on.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide prevention and awareness training that is online and takes about 25-30 minutes to complete. QPR is a lot like CPR, it can give people who aren’t professionals (all of you) a way to help someone in need. QPR teaches you first how to talk to someone who you might think is considering suicide, second, how to persuade them to get help, and last, how to refer them to help. We highly recommend this training for each of you, as well as any member of the MTU community, so please share this information.

Remember, it’s not your responsibility to provide therapy for all your friends or to fix all the problems in the world (although, if you have a cure for COVID, we’d take that…). Set healthy boundaries for yourself, check in and connect with others frequently, and get help for yourself and others before you hit rock bottom. We’re here to support you whenever you need to talk through something or get mental health help for yourself or a friend. Contact Student Mental Health at 906-487-2538 or counseling@mtu.edu for an appointment or, if it’s an after-hours emergency, dial Public Safety to speak to the on-call counselor at 906-487-2216.

Michigan Tech Title IX 2020 Sexual Misconduct Survey Results

Click for the full survey executive summary.

The recent Michigan Tech sexual misconduct climate survey reflects students’ voices and thoughts on the sexual misconduct climate, including information related to incidents of sexual violence, policy, reporting, training, programming, support and resources. In January 2020, the survey invitation was distributed to all enrolled students. Participation was voluntary and responses were anonymous. Approximately 11% responded; 21% were graduate and 77% undergraduate students.

The results tell us that overall, students agree that faculty and staff are concerned about their welfare and Michigan Tech has a good support system for students going through difficult times. Full details on the survey results can be found on Michigan Tech’s Title IX web page at mtu.edu/title-ix/assessment
