Halloweekend: Virtual Escape Rooms. Friday, October 23rd from 7-9 pm

“Framed” is the theme of this escape room and this is your scenario:
Your friend has been convicted of brutally murdering his girlfriend. He was sentenced to Execution by Gas Chamber. In his final hour, he still maintains that he has been framed for the murder but no one will believe him. The person who set him up has planted a bomb to destroy all evidence of his innocence. Time is running out as the bomb is set to explode and the gas released to send your friend to his death. You and his closest friends are his last chance at survival. Do you have what it takes to diffuse the bomb, find a way to break into prison and disable the gas chamber before it activates? You are his last hope! Good Luck.

Interact through live chat with fellow players and CyberSleuth’s live moderator while you pour over the QR clues that are regularly pushed to your mobile device. Just remember… TRUST NO ONE in this game, and whatever you do, don’t answer the door! Work to solve the crime, keep your answers to yourself, and there will only be one winner!

Summoning Spirits is a séance-meets-magic show designed to get your adrenaline pumping with help from the other side. Written and performed by Peter Boie, one of the countries top touring college acts. He’s been featured on the hit tv show, “Penn & Teller Fool Us” and is a best selling magic inventor. Summoning Spirits brings to life old legends and haunted stories live on stage, for your delight … and fright. Flu Shot Clinics Postponed!

Due to COVID-19 and the national shortage of the Flu Vaccine, the on-campus flu shot clinics scheduled for today (Oct. 22) and Monday (Oct. 26) have been postponed. Please check the Flu Shot Clinic schedule for updates on upcoming clinics and locations.  

If you have already received your flu shot be sure to log your shot and join the Yooper U’s Fight The Flu Challenge and participate in the challenge now (it only takes a second).

3 Minute Thesis Competition 2020

The Graduate Student Government is pleased to announce this year’s Three Minute Thesis competition. The competition is being held on Thursday, November 5, 2020. Registration is now open, and will be closed Friday, October 23, 2020. Also, a training workshop for the participants will be provided Wednesday, October 28th, 2020. This competition offers a great opportunity for graduate students across the university to present their research to a general audience. Participants are required to present their research within three minutes, hence the name ‘Three Minute Thesis’. This contest is open to all graduate students at any stage/path of their graduate studies. They are not required to have a finished thesis, or even a proposal to present – even coursework track students can participate. Participants are judged on their communication and presentation skills while delivering their content in just three minutes with one static PowerPoint slide.

The 3MT competition was started by the University of Queensland, Australia in 2008. Success and the growing popularity of the competition spread the idea across more than 200 universities around the globe. The winner of the local Michigan Tech competition will earn the opportunity to present at the regional 3MT competition.

It is divided into two phases: preliminary rounds and a final round. Preliminary round will be held virtually. Format for the final round is yet to be determined. The winner and runners-up will receive cash prizes of $300 and $150 respectively. Additionally, a People’s Choice award will be given to a speaker selected by the event’s audience, with a cash prize of $100. GSG invites and encourages all graduate students to take advantage of this amazing competition.

Title IX Events

#PurpleThursdayAll day Thursday, Oct. 22 – join Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE) and the National Network to End Domestic Violence in the annual tradition of wearing purple for #PurpleThursday to to shed light on domestic violence, reduce stigma, advocate for survivors, and work for greater safety and equity. Purple is the color for domestic violence awareness. In addition, (SAVE) will be handing out purple ribbons to raise awareness about domestic violence. These purple ribbons are meant to be conversation starters to discuss the prevalence of domestic violence in our communities and lives and to empower us to prevent and end domestic violence.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® at Michigan Tech – 2 PM to 6 PM Friday, Oct. 23 on the Rozsa sidewalk – The student organizations Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE) and the Society of African American Men (SAAM) are hosting Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® at Michigan Tech. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an international Men’s Walk to raise awareness of sexual and relationship violence and to give men the opportunity to put themselves in “her shoes.” All students are invited to join. The walk will start outside of the Rozsa near the front entrance. Licensed by Frank Baird and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®.

Comedian Maggie Maye

Fall Break event!

Check out Maggie Maye on Friday, October 16th at 10 pm on Zoom. She was highlighted on Gotham Comedy Live and made her late-night debut on Conan. She’s performed at festivals such as Bridgetown Comedy Festival and the All Jane Comedy Festival. She’s opened for Paul Rodriguez, Godfrey, Paul Mooney, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. She’s been featured in the Huffington Post, Variety, The New York Times, and Sidesplitter (who named her one of 2015’s up-and-coming comics). She performs improv comedy with her troupe Damn, Gina! and in various sketch and improv shows around Austin. Her comedy is described in the same way she is: sassy, charming, and smart. Also, a 6-year-old once told her she was the funniest person ever. And kids rarely lie.

General Meeting with MTSEA

Systems Engineering Association is a newly formed social and professional club for Tech students to learn and become more involved in the systems engineering discipline. We strive to connect people from different engineering disciplines and backgrounds. Additionally, we are currently in the process of becoming a student division of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).

For our first general meeting on October 20th at 7pm, we will be having a conversation with Dr. Robert Wirthlin about how systems engineering is changing automotive industries, the military, and academics. You don’t have to be a Systems Engineer to join us!

We are excited to invite you to participate in a month-long community scavenger hunt focused on finding sustainable features in our own neighborhood!  You will have until 11:59pm on October 18, 2020 to take photos with all of the items on our scavenger hunt list. 

Every 10 photos submitted to us will get you one entry into our prize drawing.  We will be awarding prize baskets to three winners filled with local products and gift cards to local businesses, valued at over $400.

The theme for homecoming this year is a Happy Little Homecoming (Bob Ross Theme)!

If you missed out on the Homecoming Shirt Swap, that’s okay!  We still have shirts available!  Stop by Student Leadership & Involvement (MUB 112) with your donation and you can get a shirt! (while supplies last). Donate an item from the list or a minimum of $5 and get a 2020 Homecoming Shirt. We are the newly-formed Climate Reality Campus Corps: Michigan Tech Chapter. The Climate Reality Project has branches on every continent except Antarctica, over 150 community chapters in cities and towns across the U.S. and over 30 campus corps chapters on college campuses. We are an official Campus Corps Chapter through Climate Reality and are working on becoming a registered student organization through Michigan Tech. We strive to educate the MTU community on the climate crisis and have a long-term goal of urging Michigan Tech to commit to 100% renewable electricity in addition to other campaigns related to climate action.  
In an event called 24 Hours of Reality: Countdown to the Future, hundreds of Climate Reality Leaders around the world will be giving presentations on the climate crisis between 4 pm Eastern time on Saturday, October 10th and 4 pm on Sunday, October 11th. Kendra Lachcik, a trained Climate Reality leader will be giving an hour-long virtual presentation over Zoom here at Michigan Tech on Saturday, October 10th at 6 pm. She will explain the science behind climate change, its impacts, the solutions, and how Michigan Tech fits into the bigger picture. The presentation is open to all Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff as well as community members.

RSO re-registration & training are due Friday, October 2nd at 5pm. This year, the process has been integrated into Involvement Link and you can find helpful instructions for locating and navigating your training here

Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, and Advisors of all Registered Student Organizations are required to participate in training. Additionally, Presidents are required to submit a re-registration in order to maintain their RSO’s active status. Instructions for completing re-registration can be found here

The Importance of Community Discovery and Obligation: Strategies for Successful Project, Service Learning and Global Experiences

The Global and Community Engagement Conference (formerly D80) is a dialogue and celebration of our efforts to solve issues that confront the world’s poorest 80%. Traditionally, it’s a one-day conference featuring multiple in-person panels. This year, the conference will be delivered in multiple formats, including a lecture series, a Rozsa gallery exhibit, a walking tour, and a series of online interviews with changemakers around the Michigan Tech community.

This year’s theme is “The Pursuit of Social Equality and Representation,” and features keynote speaker Dr. Meghan L.E. Kirkwood. Kirkwood is an assistant professor of Visual Art at Washington University in St. Louis where she teaches photography. Kirkwood’s photography interests concentrate on landscape photography and the ways artistic representations of land help generate and sustain values and attitudes toward the natural environment. In tandem with her studio practice.

Student session: “The Importance of Community Discovery & Obligation: Strategies for Successful Project, Service Learning and Global Experiences,” to be held Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 6-7 p.m.

When do you immerse yourself fully into a service learning project or global experience? When do you maintain a respectful distance? How do you respect the culture of the community you’re engaging with? This session is designed for student leaders who want to learn strategies to understanding their roles and thoughtfully prepare for engagement opportunities.   

Campus Lunch and Learn: “The Pursuit of Social Equity & Representation: Impacting Classroom and Student Engagement,” to be held Friday, October 2, 2020 from noon-1 p.m.

During a time of national and global uncertainty, it’s important to explore how our interactions with students impact their Michigan Tech experiences. Dr. Kirkwood will discuss the value of presenting diverse narratives while remaining mindful of the unique viewpoints of our students.

RSO Room Reservation Information

Due to the current Health & Safety level on campus and the ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, many of our buildings have adjusted their options for room reservations this semester.

Memorial Union Building

  • Reservations are for the fall semester only
    • reserved on a first-come, first-served basis 
    • reservation requests for the spring semester will be accepted beginning on November 1, 2020
  • Ballroom is available after 6 p.m. Monday–Friday and on weekends during normal operating hours
    • offered up for student use as a quasi-classroom, Monday–Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for the fall semester when classes are in session
    • Weekdays – walls up separating Ballrooms A1, A2, and B with classroom seating only
    • Weekends – walls can be removed for use of the entire Ballroom with classroom seating only
  • Alumni Lounge will be offline for the fall semester to be utilized as a University testing site
  • Room capacities will be determined using approved capacity guidance
    • Capacities will vary depending on what is allowable for your event/activity type and the meeting room setup you require
    • Existing reservations will be assessed every week for reservations within 30 days, confirming that reservations are still in line with COVID-19 protocols
    • Any additional service staff that are part of your meeting (i.e. Catering or IT) will count toward your overall capacity
  • Rooms will be sanitized between scheduled events and in-room self-sanitizing stations will be available to users
  • Submit a room request here at least 72 hours (3 days) before your event.  If you need to request a room less than 72 hours ahead of time, please contact the Memorial Union at 906-487-2543 or reservations-l@mtu.edu.  
  • Room Setups – View standard setups for each room here. Custom setups are not available at this time.

  • Classroom reservations for evenings and weekends are maintained in the Registrar’s Office.  You may submit your request using the online room reservation system.  
  • Room reservation requests must be submitted at least one day in advance to ensure Public Safety and Police Services and Energy Management are notified.
  • Registered Student Organizations must adhere to guidelines found here.
  • For all group meetings, the group size of 10 is in effect. Even though your room may hold more, your group must adhere to the size of 10. An option if you have more is to reserve another room or meet outside.
  • Reminder: Public Safety and Police Services is responsible for the locking of all University buildings. If you need after hours access to a building or room, or lock yourself out of your office, please call 487-2216.
  • Information: If you need to reserve equipment or need assistance in a classroom, please contact Information Technology-User Services at it-help@mtu.edu or call 487-1111. Any questions, call the Registrar’s Office at 487-2319.
  • Classrooms are cleaned daily, except weekends. Sanitize the areas where you sit and touch before and after use. Groups must maintain at least six feet of distance. Face coverings must be worn. Close windows, turn off lights, clean up, return room to order, and close the door when leaving. Be smart, do your part, and be responsible for your own safety.

Update on SDC Reservations for RSOs!

The SDC will resume reservations for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) for the 2020-21 academic year on September 21. 

Updated guidelines on the SDC reservation process, requirements and procedures during COVID-19 will be released early next week. Michigan Tech is adhering to state and federal guidelines related to event size, public gatherings and health and safety protocols. Face coverings are required during athletic RSO practices and competitions.

Please note that in addition to the SDC’s COVID-19 guidelines, your plan must also meet the Student Leadership & Involvement Office’s RSO Consideration for Physical Activities and Club Sports During COVID-19.

All RSO reservations that have already been submitted to the SDC are being held. There is no need to submit another form at this time. We thank you for your patience and look forward to getting your group back to the SDC!

ResEd Spotlight Board Program

We at ResEd have created the Spotlight Board Program which is designed to have student organizations come into the residence hall and decorate a bulletin board to introduce a learning opportunity. The board should be decorated with a given theme and content of your choosing as well as some information about your organization and how other students can get involved. Content can be anything from history/heritage month, awareness month, or any topic that your organization wants to spotlight.

If a student organization submits an idea, the residence hall councils will choose what they want to see in their environment. Submitting an idea does not guarantee your board will be picked for a certain month. For more information about this process you read up on the policy here: Spotlight Board Policy

EWI is an annual event hosted by the Michigan Tech Society of Women Engineers the day before the Fall Career Fair. EWI provides a relaxed environment where students and corporate representatives can interact before the career fair.

Please Take Care of Breakers

The North Canal Township Park is what we call “Breakers.” Breakers is unique in that the beach was partly formed due to the result of local mining and is made up largely of stamp sand. Breakers is very popular for students at Michigan Tech – the drive out is nice and it seems like there’s always some group having a bonfire. But we must also be good stewards of the park. Here are a few tips to help us all continue to enjoy Breakers…

ResEd Spotlight Board Program

We at ResEd have created the Spotlight Board Program which is designed to have student organizations come into the residence hall and decorate a bulletin board to introduce a learning opportunity. The board should be decorated with a given theme and content of your choosing as well as some information about your organization and how other students can get involved. Content can be anything from history/heritage month, awareness month, or any topic that your organization wants to spotlight.

If a student organization submits an idea, the residence hall councils will choose what they want to see in their environment. Submitting an idea does not guarantee your board will be picked for a certain month. For more information about this process you read up on the policy here: Spotlight Board Policy

K-Day 2020 – THIS FRIDAY!

You are now entering the Involvement Zone… K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is our student organization fair and it’s an annual tradition at Michigan Tech held on the Friday of the week of Labor Day – THIS FRIDAY! This is your opportunity to meet organizations and find out how you can get involved.

This year, there are multiple ways for you to enjoy K-Day. First, you can attend virtually through Involvement Link on Friday, September 11 between Noon and 5 PM.  There are opportunities to win a prize for participating during that time! You can also attend any of the in-person K-Day opportunities.  They are all taking place on campus! The first three in-person K-Days are: Friday, September 11 Noon – 2PM, Friday, September 11 3-5PM, and Tuesday, September 15 1-3PM. Evening with Industry

EWI is an annual event hosted by the Michigan Tech Society of Women Engineers the day before the Fall Career Fair. EWI provides a relaxed environment where students and corporate representatives can interact before the career fair.

The event is open to all Michigan Tech University students, who will have the opportunity to network with company representatives while learning about numerous and diverse companies and the internship, co-op, and full-time employment opportunities they offer. These employers target Michigan Tech in their recruiting efforts and are eager to meet and interact with top talented students.


RSO Room Reservation Information

Due to the current Health & Safety level on campus and the ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, many of our buildings have adjusted their options for room reservations this semester.

Memorial Union Building

  • Reservations are for the fall semester only
    • reserved on a first-come, first-served basis 
    • reservation requests for the spring semester will be accepted beginning on November 1, 2020
  • Ballroom is available after 6 p.m. Monday–Friday and on weekends during normal operating hours
    • offered up for student use as a quasi-classroom, Monday–Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for the fall semester when classes are in session
    • Weekdays – walls up separating Ballrooms A1, A2, and B with classroom seating only
    • Weekends – walls can be removed for use of the entire Ballroom with classroom seating only
  • Alumni Lounge will be offline for the fall semester to be utilized as a University testing site
  • Room capacities will be determined using approved capacity guidance
    • Capacities will vary depending on what is allowable for your event/activity type and the meeting room setup you require
    • Existing reservations will be assessed every week for reservations within 30 days, confirming that reservations are still in line with COVID-19 protocols
    • Any additional service staff that are part of your meeting (i.e. Catering or IT) will count toward your overall capacity
  • Rooms will be sanitized between scheduled events and in-room self-sanitizing stations will be available to users
  • Submit a room request here at least 72 hours (3 days) before your event.  If you need to request a room less than 72 hours ahead of time, please contact the Memorial Union at 906-487-2543 or reservations-l@mtu.edu.  
  • Room Setups – View standard setups for each room here. Custom setups are not available at this time.

Registrar – Academic Buildings and Classrooms

  • Classroom reservations for evenings and weekends are maintained in the Registrar’s Office.  You may submit your request using the online room reservation system.  
  • Room reservation requests must be submitted at least one day in advance to ensure Public Safety and Police Services and Energy Management are notified.
  • Registered Student Organizations must adhere to guidelines found here.
  • For all group meetings, the group size of 10 is in effect. Even though your room may hold more, your group must adhere to the size of 10. An option if you have more is to reserve another room or meet outside.
  • Reminder: Public Safety and Police Services is responsible for the locking of all University buildings. If you need after hours access to a building or room, or lock yourself out of your office, please call 487-2216.
  • Information: If you need to reserve equipment or need assistance in a classroom, please contact Information Technology-User Services at it-help@mtu.edu or call 487-1111. Any questions, call the Registrar’s Office at 487-2319.
  • Classrooms are cleaned daily, except weekends. Sanitize the areas where you sit and touch before and after use. Groups must maintain at least six feet of distance. Face coverings must be worn. Close windows, turn off lights, clean up, return room to order, and close the door when leaving. Be smart, do your part, and be responsible for your own safety.


Please Take Care of Breakers

The North Canal Township Park is what we call “Breakers.” Breakers is unique in that the beach was partly formed due to the result of local mining and is made up largely of stamp sand. Breakers is very popular for students at Michigan Tech – the drive out is nice and it seems like there’s always some group having a bonfire. But we must also be good stewards of the park. Here are a few tips to help us all continue to enjoy Breakers…

  • Pack it in, pack it out
  • Leave it better than you found it
  • Let the wildlife be
  • Be prepared
  • Think about your impact
  • Be courteous to others

Michigan Tech Snapchat Takeovers

Do you want to raise awareness about your organization or event? Attract more members? Show others the great things you’re doing? University Marketing and Communications is looking for responsible, outgoing students, faculty, or staff willing to run a Snapchat Takeover.
University Snapchat Coordinator Megan Ross works with campus groups to organize awareness-raising Snapchat Takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With more than 2,500 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach other students.
We’ve had students and groups run takeovers in other countries through IPS, promote Enterprise competitions with the Concrete Canoe team, share their work with Summer Youth Programs, show incoming students what the Residence Education and OTL teams are preparing, and much more.
To run a Snapchat Takeover, all you need to do is identify who will run the takeover and choose a time slot of one to three days where that person can highlight your organization or event. Then go online to check availability, fill out the request form and contract, and review our tips and tricks. Email socialnetwork@mtu.edu with any questions.

An Afternoon on the Town

On Saturday, August 29th starting at 10:00 AM the annual Welcome Week event, An Afternoon on the Town, will take place virtually. 
Students will engage with a virtual map to learn about local businesses and organizations to welcome new students and returning students prior to the fall semester. The virtual map can be found here.

There will be an opportunity for students to enter to win prizes by filling out the Prize Form before 3 p.m. on Saturday. The map will be accessible after the Prize Form closes.
