The Rozsa Center Presents Three Holiday Concerts This Week

Celebrate the holidays with music at the Rozsa! Join the Rozsa Center and the Michigan Tech Department of Visual and Performing Arts for two holiday inspired concerts this week: enjoy “Gifts of Music,” a concert by the Superior Wind Symphony on Friday, December 14. And the Michigan Tech Choirs present a “Celebration of Lights” on Saturday, December 15. Both shows are at 7:30 pm at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

On Friday, The Superior Wind Symphony brings musical gifts that are varied and diverse for you at the end of this year. The Gifts of Music program includes “The Sussex Mummer’s Christmas Carol” by Percy Grainger and Mike Christianson; “Three Moods of Hanukkah,” arranged by Lenny Niehaus; two traditional carols, Silent Night and O Tannebaum, co-arranged by Wynton Marsalis, and “Variations on a Shaker Melody” by  Aaron Copland; among other holiday-inspired songs.

Jared Anderson, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Michigan Tech, presents A Celebration of Lights,  “The choirs at Michigan Tech are looking forward to sharing a program of diverse music that they have grown to love over the past couple of months. The concert includes traditional carols as well as a number of newer pieces that capture the spirit of the holiday season, when the nights are long and we appreciate light from many sources.  The choirs will sing of light from the menorah, the moon, stars, warm homes, a cradle. We hope that people from across the Keweenaw will take some time to join us for this concert. We are especially looking forward to collaborating with the Copper Country Bells, a local group of handbell players who will join the combined choirs for two numbers on the program.”

Tickets for Gifts of Music and Celebration of Lights are on sale now, $13 for adults, $5 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Tickets are available by phone at (906) 487-2073, online at mtu.edu/rozsa, in person at the Central Ticketing Office in the Student Development Complex, or the night of the show at the Rozsa box office, which opens two hours prior to performances.

Banana Phone

The Rozsa Center and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) are excited to announce their semi-annual student showcase. The showcase, titled Banana Phone, features works of art created by Michigan Tech students who are participating in Project Learning Lab. Project Learning Lab is an innovative arts classroom based inside of Rozsa gallery b. Work on display was created by students in Lisa Gordillo’s Contemporary Sculpture and art + design classes. The exhibition runs Dec. 7 – 10, 2018. A reception will be held Friday, Dec. 7, from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm.

SURF Applications Now Open

Applications for 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) are now open. Fellowship recipients will spend the summer on an individual research project under the guidance of a Michigan Tech faculty mentor. SURFs are open to all Tech undergraduates who have at least one semester remaining after the summer term. Awards are up to $4,000. Applications are due by 4 pm on January 25, 2019.

A workshop on writing effective SURF proposals is scheduled for 6 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 11 in Fisher 132.

We are looking for creative, action-oriented students who are passionate and excited about innovation, entrepreneurship, or making positive change. The Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting the 2018 Bob Mark Business Model Competition on Wednesday, December 5 from 7-9 p.m. in the Opie Library. The competition includes an idea pitch and a business model description. Come show your support and cheer on your fellow huskies!

President Koubek will be serving as a distinguished judge alongside other entrepreneurially minded faculty, staff, and community members. Prizes for the upcoming Bob Mark Business Model Competition will be:

First Prize – $2,000 + $100 services from MTEC SmartZone

Second Prize – $1,000 + $100 services from MTEC SmartZone

Third Prize – $500 + $100 services from MTEC SmartZone

The 2018 Bob Mark Business Model Competition is part of Husky Innovate, a series of workshops and events that build on each other with the intention of guiding students through key phases of innovation or business development while emphasizing evidence based strategies for success. Bob Mark Business Model Competition is hosted by the Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship, which is a collaboration between the Pavlis Honors College, the School of Business and Economics, and the Vice President for Research Office.

Self-Motivation Talk/Seminar

African Students Organization’s campus-wide seminar on self-motivation as final exams draw close. The speaker is Professor Amato-Henderson. She is the chair of Cognitive and Learning Sciences department and expert in motivation science, self-efficacy, and individual differences in STEM learning.

The Summer Reading as Inquiry Committee is seeking book recommendations for fall 2019 and we’d love to hear from you!

Please review the recommendation guidelines below and if you have a title you’d like to recommend, complete the recommendation form.

Reading as Inquiry Book Recommendation Guidelines:

• Feasibility: Is the book a reasonable length (<350 pages)? Will it be in paperback by May?
• Readability: Could students read this with little guidance over the summer? Does it keep their attention until the end of the book? Does it appeal to a wide audience, regardless of major?
• Relevance: Are the themes and/or characters relevant to the Michigan Tech community and students, particularly as they transition from high school to college?
• Integration: Could the book be used across disciplines and campus programs?
• Author availability: Is the author living and an engaging speaker? (A priority of the program is to bring the author to campus.)

Home for the Holidays Gift Mart: Call for Vendors

Vendor booth applications are now being accepted for the 21st Annual Home for the Holidays Gift Mart, which will be held at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, November 24th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The annual Home for the Holidays Gift Mart is a juried show, guaranteeing patrons an excellent and varied assortment of quality hand-crafted items to shop. Fifty vendors will be accepted into this year’s Gift Mart, and local crafters and artists are encouraged to apply. Interested vendors, contact the Rozsa Center for a Booth Application by calling (906) 487-2858, or by emailing rozsa@mtu.edu. Early applications will be reviewed on Friday, October 19th, and vendors will be notified of their acceptance during the week of October 22nd. Applications received after October 19th will be reviewed upon receipt, and the application deadline is November 16th.

MUB Board is Hosting Splash of Color – Painting Night

Join in on the fun and express yourself by painting either a canvas, glass or rock.

The Painting Night Splash of Color will take place in the Maker Space, MUB B002. Thursday, November 29th,  from 7 pm to 9 pm. Supplies are limited and is on a first come first served basis.

The Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting the 2018 Bob Mark Business Model Competition on Wednesday, December 5 from 7-9 p.m. in the Opie Library. Students can apply to compete here. The 2018 competition includes an idea pitch and a business model description.

This event is a tribute to the late Bob Mark, Professor of Practice within the School of Business and Economics. Mark started and ran the first four years of the Elevator Pitch Competition and brought the Business Plan Competition to Michigan Tech. The Bob Mark Elevator Pitch Competition and other efforts support his entrepreneurial spirit that continues to live on in students, faculty, and staff.

Students who participated in the Idea Pitch Competition on October 17 are strongly encouraged to apply to compete in the Bob Mark Business Model Competition. Students should apply by submitting this form no later than midnight on Wednesday, November 21st (before Thanksgiving break). The top 15 applicants will be selected to participate in the Bob Mark Business Model Competition. Students who upload a business model canvas to their application will be given priority consideration. Student guidelines, scoring criteria, and a blank Business Model Canvas can be found at mtu.edu/honors/ice/husky-innovate.

Industry Speaker from Altair

The Enterprise Program will be hosting Altair’s Training and EDU Technical Relations Manager, Erik Larson, November 14 and 15 for a two-part industry speaker series event. On Wednesday, November 14 from 1-3pm in the Active Learning Center (MEEM120) Erik Larson will provide an overview of Altair’s revolutionary, easy to use structural, optimization and motion analysis tool, Inspire.  Inspire offers a simple interface that will allow the user to quickly and easily prepare and solve Finite Element Analysis problems to aid in the engineering and light weighting of static and motion based systems. Inspire leads Altair’s suite of software that promotes their philosophy of simulation driven design. Attend this seminar and start creating intelligent designs for  your  senior design and enterprise projects. This session is open to all levels of students and no prior FEA experience is necessary. Instructions for downloading the FREE, fully functional student edition of Inspire will be provided at the seminar as well.

On Thursday, November 15 from 10 am-12 pm and 2-4 pm in M&M 718A students will have the ability to meet with Erik to get support and guidance on the application of the Altair software suite to current projects.

Erik Larson (’91 BSME) is Altair’s Training and EDU Technical Relations Manager. He is responsible for managing and conducting both online and instructor-led trainings for the United States. Additionally, Erik acts as a technical liaison for the Altair EDU outreach program, helping universities discover how the Altair suite of tools can enrich their curriculum and training faculty and students in the tools. Erik has over 25 years of experience conducting FEA structural, optimization and crash analysis.

ICE House Event

ICE House Resident Assistant and  eClub (Entrepreneurship Club) member Josh Jay is opening up the  ICE House , an MTU innovation and entrepreneurship theme house, to host a 1 Million Cups of Coffee event on 11/14/18 from 9:00 am -10:00 am.  If you are interested in entrepreneurship – stop by to support our student entrepreneurs and presenters Cameron Philo and Ranit Karmakar.  The address is 21610 Woodland Road, Houghton.  Parking temporarily will be available in Lot 25, which is adjacent to and east of the ICE House .  Parking permits will be provided at the event.  This event’s coffee will be generously donated by a local company.

Vendor booth applications are now being accepted for the 21st Annual Home for the Holidays Gift Mart, which will be held at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, November 24th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The annual Home for the Holidays Gift Mart is a juried show, guaranteeing patrons an excellent and varied assortment of quality hand-crafted items to shop. Fifty vendors will be accepted into this year’s Gift Mart, and local crafters and artists are encouraged to apply. Interested vendors, contact the Rozsa Center for a Booth Application by calling (906) 487-2858, or by emailing rozsa@mtu.edu. Early applications will be reviewed on Friday, October 19th, and vendors will be notified of their acceptance during the week of October 22nd. Bob Mark Business Model Competition Applications Now Open

The Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting the 2018 Bob Mark Business Model Competition on Wednesday, December 5 from 7-9 p.m. in the Opie Library. Students can apply to compete here. The 2018 competition includes an idea pitch and a business model description.

President Koubek will be serving as a distinguished judge alongside other entrepreneurially minded faculty, staff, and community members.

Prizes for the upcoming Bob Mark Business Model Competition will be:

First Prize – $2,000 + $100 services from MTEC SmartZone

Second Prize – $1,000 + $100 services from MTEC SmartZone

Third Prize – $500 + $100 services from MTEC SmartZone   

Honorable Mention (2) – $250 each

Audience Favorite – $250

MTEC SmartZone prize – $1000

This event is a tribute to the late Bob Mark, Professor of Practice within the School of Business and Economics. Mark started and ran the first four years of the Elevator Pitch Competition and brought the Business Plan Competition to Michigan Tech. The Bob Mark Elevator Pitch Competition and other efforts support his entrepreneurial spirit that continues to live on in students, faculty, and staff.

Students who participated in the Idea Pitch Competition on October 17 are strongly encouraged to apply to compete in the Bob Mark Business Model Competition. Students should apply by submitting this form no later than midnight on Wednesday, November 21st (before Thanksgiving break). The top 15 applicants will be selected to participate in the Bob Mark Business Model Competition. Students who upload a business model canvas to their application will be given priority consideration. Student guidelines, scoring criteria, and a blank Business Model Canvas can be found at mtu.edu/honors/ice/husky-innovate.

The 2018 Bob Mark Business Model Competition is part of Husky Innovate, a series of workshops and events that build on each other with the intention of guiding students through key phases of innovation or business development while emphasizing evidence based strategies for success. Bob Mark Business Model Competition is hosted by the Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship, which is a collaboration between the Pavlis Honors College, the School of Business and Economics, and the Vice President for Research Office.

SURF Applications Now Open

Applications for 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) are now open. Fellowship recipients will spend the summer on an individual research project under the guidance of a Michigan Tech faculty mentor. SURFs are open to all Tech undergraduates who have at least one semester remaining after the summer term. Awards are up to $4,000. Applications are due by 4 pm on January 25, 2019.

A workshop on writing effective SURF proposals is scheduled for 6 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 11 in Fisher 132.

Michigan Tech Emergency Medical Services

Michigan Tech Emergency Medical Services is a student-led first responder agency with the purpose of providing high-quality medical response 24/7 to the Michigan Tech campus and surrounding areas as well as providing on-campus Heartsaver first aid and CPR and Basic Life Support certifications. Our volunteers are licensed as Emergency Medical Technicians through the State of Michigan and National Registry Certified. Each year, a small group of MTU students are accepted to become certified through participation in over 200 hours of education through the class put on by the agency. Further opportunities for members of the organization involve CPR instructor licensure, providing first aid standby at hockey games and other MTU athletic events, and involvement in community outreach events. Please review the recommendation guidelines below and if you have a title you’d like to recommend, complete the recommendation form.

Reading as Inquiry Book Recommendation Guidelines:

• Feasibility: Is the book a reasonable length (<350 pages)? Will it be in paperback by May?
• Readability: Could students read this with little guidance over the summer? Does it keep their attention until the end of the book? Does it appeal to a wide audience, regardless of major?
• Relevance: Are the themes and/or characters relevant to the Michigan Tech community and students, particularly as they transition from high school to college?
• Integration: Could the book be used across disciplines and campus programs?
• Author availability: Is the author living and an engaging speaker? (A priority of the program is to bring the author to campus.)

Social Justice Series

University Marketing and Communications at Michigan Tech is looking for student groups to run temporary takeovers of its Snapchat account. UMC is seeking your help in identifying responsible and outgoing students in your organization who would be willing to run a Snapchat takeover. The benefit to you? Raising student awareness about Michigan Tech in general and about your organization in particular.

The university Snapchat coordinator, Ben Jaszczak, works with campus groups like yours to organize awareness-raising Snapchat takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With over 2,000 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach undergraduate and prospective students.

To run a Snapchat takeover, all you need to do is identify a student(s) who is willing to run the takeover and choose a time slot of 1-3 days where they can highlight your program or event. At-Risk for Students Course

College can be stressful at times, and Michigan Tech wants to empower our students with the resources they need to help one another.  We’re excited to present the Kognito simulation At-Risk for Students course, which will help in recognizing signs of distress, determining if a friend needs help, how to talk to someone in need of help, or where you or your friend can turn to for resources.  It can be difficult to deal with these kinds of issues, but an effective conversation can help more than you think-it can help change someones life.  We hope you enjoy this simulation, as we all work together to help one another and build a stronger community.

Kognito is an online training simulation to help students learn how to talk to others in need and help in a crisis situation using role playing.

Are you up for a Halloween challenge?  Come join the Michigan Tech Army ROTC program in our inaugural Husky Alpine Run, on Saturday, October 27^th, which is a 5 km trail race ON Mont Ripley!  Don’t ski?  Don’t snowboard?  No worries.  Many people enjoy skiing and snowboarding the slopes of Ripley and now you get to run them!  We encourage everyone to show up and run in their Halloween costume as prizes are awarded to the costume contest winner!  All racers will get complementary food and beverages after the event and there will also be raffle prizes.  The winners of each age group (male and female) will receive medals, and the overall male and female winners will get their names engraved on a plaque that will be posted in the ROTC building.  Sign up now and get a free event t-shirt.  Students get an incredible deal of ONLY $15 for registration!

Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ Turns 200 Years Old!

The School of Technology is ‘thrilled’ to offer an opportunity for their students (& non-SoT majors) to show off their skills and talents in a Halloween Makers Competition for best costume or decoration. Points will be awarded to teams in the following categories:

1) function of the mechanical component;                                        

2) sensor/actuator functionality;

3) robustness of the supporting code;

4) detail and impact of the costume or decoration;

5) creative use of materials;

6) overall creativity of the design.

Set of Rules:

• Teams of 3 or more are required.
• Budget is limited to $50 for the team, points for creative re-use (upscaling) of materials.
• Teams must be comprised of 2 or more SoT majors. Non-SoT students can also join the team.
• Teams must be comprised of 2 or more class years (e.g. freshmen, sophomores, etc.)
• Costume or decoration must include a mechanical component as well as a programmed sensor/actuator.

Judging will be completed by a panel of faculty and staff with expertise in mechanical, electrical, and computing on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31.

A cash prize of $250.00 will be awarded to the best TEAM!

• Costume or decoration must include a mechanical component as well as a programmed sensor/actuator.

Judging will be completed by a panel of faculty and staff with expertise in mechanical, electrical, and computing on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31.

A cash prize of $250.00 will be awarded to the best TEAM!

Teams are encouraged to sign up by Friday, October 12^th in the School of Technology’s Main Office (EERC 426) or by completing the Google Form.

Home for the Holidays Gift Mart: Call for Vendors

Vendor booth applications are now being accepted for the 21st Annual Home for the Holidays Gift Mart, which will be held at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, November 24th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The annual Home for the Holidays Gift Mart is a juried show, guaranteeing patrons an excellent and varied assortment of quality hand-crafted items to shop. Fifty vendors will be accepted into this year’s Gift Mart, and local crafters and artists are encouraged to apply. Interested vendors, contact the Rozsa Center for a Booth Application by calling (906) 487-2858, or by emailing rozsa@mtu.edu. Early applications will be reviewed on Friday, October 19th, and vendors will be notified of their acceptance during the week of October 22nd. Applications received after October 19th will be reviewed upon receipt, and the application deadline is November 16th.

University Marketing and Communications at Michigan Tech is looking for student groups to run temporary takeovers of its Snapchat account. UMC is seeking your help in identifying responsible and outgoing students in your organization who would be willing to run a Snapchat takeover. The benefit to you? Raising student awareness about Michigan Tech in general and about your organization in particular.

The university Snapchat coordinator, Ben Jaszczak, works with campus groups like yours to organize awareness-raising Snapchat takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With over 2,000 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach undergraduate and prospective students.

To run a Snapchat takeover, all you need to do is identify a student(s) who is willing to run the takeover and choose a time slot of 1-3 days where they can highlight your program or event. With that information, contact us at video@mtu.edu to schedule your takeover.  You can direct any questions about this event to Ben Jaszczak, Multimedia Specialist and Snapchat Coordinator, at bjjaszcz@mtu.edu.  We appreciate your help!

At-Risk for Students Course

College can be stressful at times, and Michigan Tech wants to empower our students with the resources they need to help one another.  We’re excited to present the Kognito simulation At-Risk for Students course, which will help in recognizing signs of distress, determining if a friend needs help, how to talk to someone in need of help, or where you or your friend can turn to for resources.  It can be difficult to deal with these kinds of issues, but an effective conversation can help more than you think-it can help change someones life.  We hope you enjoy this simulation, as we all work together to help one another and build a stronger community.

Kognito is an online training simulation to help students learn how to talk to others in need and help in a crisis situation using role playing.

Are you up for a Halloween challenge?  Come join the Michigan Tech Army ROTC program in our inaugural Husky Alpine Run, on Saturday,October 27^th, which is a 5 km trail race ON Mont Ripley!  Don’t ski?  Don’t snowboard?  No worries.  Many people enjoy skiing and snowboarding the slopes of Ripley and now you get to run them!  We encourage everyone to show up and run in their Halloween costume as prizes are awarded to the costume contest winner!  All racers will get complementary food and beverages after the event and there will also be raffle prizes.  The winners of each age group (male and female) will receive medals, and the overall male and female winners will get their names engraved on a plaque that will be posted in the ROTC building.  Sign up now and get a free event t-shirt.  Students get an incredible deal of ONLY $15 for registration!

We also want to give back to our community in Houghton and help fund road repairs caused by the devastating Father’s Day flooding.  To do so, we will donate part of our proceeds to help fund flood relief efforts.  So, come outand have a fun time and help us support our community!
