Michigan Tech Announces Research Excellence Fund Awards

The Vice President for Research Office announces the Fall 2020 REF awards. Thanks to the individual REF reviewers and the REF review panelists, as well as the deans and department chairs, for their time spent on this important internal research award process.

Disabilities, both visible and unseen, impact approximately 26% of the US population and research has shown that both graduation and retention rates for students with disabilities are lower than those of their peers. Faculty ranks are also impacted with only 3.6% of tenured faculty identifying themselves as individuals with disabilities. While efforts to include disability in diversity work are gaining momentum, it’s time for a reckoning in higher education. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup features an article from Inside HigherEd that discusses the need for an increase in diversity and inclusion efforts for those with disabilities.

Gretchin Hein Receives Award from SWE

Gretchen Hein (MMET) is the recipient of a major award from the world’s largest advocate and catalyst for change for women in engineering and technology.

During ceremonies held online earlier this month, Hein was honored by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), with the SWE Outstanding Advisor Award. 

Hein is a senior lecturer in the Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology and has served as SWE’s Academic Advisor for many years. In March 2019, Hein attended SWE’s Congressional Outreach Days in Washington, DC where she discussed STEM education and inclusion of underrepresented groups with U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters and U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman. 

This is not the first honor bestowed on Hein. In February, she was awarded a Faculty Award at MTU’s 2020 Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards Ceremony. She has been recognized by advising an eCYBERMISSION national winning team by the National Science Teachers Association and in 2017 was named a Positive Female Role Model by Michigan Tech’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

November 13, 2020 ADVANCE Weekly Roundup

Future faculty are the students at colleges and universities today. The bias in selection for success changes the demographics of potential faculty. The student debt crisis in the United States continues to rise to unprecedented levels with total student debt totalling in excess of $1.5 trillion. The burden of borrowing to finance higher education is not equitably distributed. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup focuses on the impacts of “Borrowing While Black” and the factors that exacerbate the student debt crisis for Black Students. An emphasis on addressing this crisis can ensure that the benefits of college are more equitably distributed including that future faculty will be more diverse.

Invisibility. Both gender and sexual minorities in STEM experience invisibility on a regular basis at their universities, in their laboratories, and even in the classroom. To alleviate these inequities and foster an environment of inclusion within the STEM community, it is important to listen to the “invisible” voices. In today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup, we highlight a recent article in Nature that amplifies some of these voices and their expectations for how they would like to be welcomed and included in STEM.
