ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Ways to accelerate a culture shift

How can Michigan Tech accelerate the cultural shift needed to make campus feel truly inclusive to women and minorities? Today’s ADVANCE weekly roundup features two Chronicle of Higher Education articles about achieving this shift. In one, Alec Gallimore, Dean of Engineering at the University of Michigan, describes how his college significantly transformed leadership by addressing where the playing field wasn’t level, such as by questioning perceptions of job candidates, ensuring equal access to mentors, and evaluating department chair applicants based on their diversity records and plans. In the other, Frank Gilliam, chancellor at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro describes how his campus is achieving the threshold of “substantive representation” through methods such as resource allocation and messaging.

Cultures in academia were established more than a century ago when everyone hailed from the same demographic.  While cultures have slowly evolved, fair treatment according to student/faculty needs have not all been addressed which means inequity remains deeply rooted in academia. Systemic inequities can manifest in a number of ways, including the peer review process. In fact in some journals such as Econometrica, submit-accept times for female authored papers take six months longer to complete peer review (Hengel 2016). Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup highlights a guest editorial from the Journal of Engineering Education that grapples with the experience of systemic racism in peer review. It recounts the experiences of a Black, engineering education graduate student and her advisor and issues a call to action to confront and overcome systemic inequities in the academy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound impacts on all aspects of academia. An article from Science reports that recent studies indicate that the pandemic’s impact has hit academic mothers particularly hard. It has exacerbated existing disparities and created further challenges for women, including significant loss of time dedicated to research. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup features this article which encourages the use and consideration of COVID-19 impact statements in current and post-pandemic tenure and promotion reviews.

Much as our lived experiences are influenced by the intersections of our identities, so too are our perceptions of diversity and inclusion. Recent research from the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at Harvard University indicates that white faculty members often have a vastly different perception of diversity and inclusion than their non-white counterparts. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup highlights a recent analysis from COACHE on this difference as well as the idea of faculty “fit” and how we can improve our narratives to progress toward equity on our campus.

Are you ready to be an ally for equity in higher education? Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup features an article from The Chronicle of Higher Education focusing on ways Black academics believe their white colleagues can better support them within their units and across campus. Use today’s resources as a launchpad but be sure to simultaneously have regular conversations with underrepresented individuals to ensure your allyship is best positioned as an effective partnership.

For example, while we all know that hard work is requisite for success in academia, not everyone recognizes that underrepresented minorities often face an even heavier work burden in order to be successful. As a double whammy, perceptions of the value of contributions are not equitable either. Simply confronting these inequities is one place where allyship can be critical.

Disabilities, both visible and unseen, impact approximately 26% of the US population and research has shown that both graduation and retention rates for students with disabilities are lower than those of their peers. Faculty ranks are also impacted with only 3.6% of tenured faculty identifying themselves as individuals with disabilities. While efforts to include disability in diversity work are gaining momentum, it’s time for a reckoning in higher education. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup features an article from Inside HigherEd that discusses the need for an increase in diversity and inclusion efforts for those with disabilities.

Future faculty are the students at colleges and universities today. The bias in selection for success changes the demographics of potential faculty. The student debt crisis in the United States continues to rise to unprecedented levels with total student debt totalling in excess of $1.5 trillion. The burden of borrowing to finance higher education is not equitably distributed. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup focuses on the impacts of “Borrowing While Black” and the factors that exacerbate the student debt crisis for Black Students. An emphasis on addressing this crisis can ensure that the benefits of college are more equitably distributed including that future faculty will be more diverse.

Invisibility. Both gender and sexual minorities in STEM experience invisibility on a regular basis at their universities, in their laboratories, and even in the classroom. To alleviate these inequities and foster an environment of inclusion within the STEM community, it is important to listen to the “invisible” voices. In today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup, we highlight a recent article in Nature that amplifies some of these voices and their expectations for how they would like to be welcomed and included in STEM. Lack of transparency is a primary complaint nationally among faculty who experience inequitable workloads. A potential solution is the development of faculty work activity dashboards organized at the departmental or college level. These dashboards can assist in identifying and correcting equity issues within your unit. Today’s Weekly Roundup features research from ADVANCE programs at the University of Maryland and University of Massachusetts, Amherst that breaks down the development and execution of these faculty work activity dashboards. ADVANCE at Michigan Tech supports the development of faculty work activity dashboards, such as providing assistance in identifying appropriate content, identifying areas of inequity, or resolving inequities which may be identified as a result of implementing these dashboards.
