ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Largest-ever survey exposes career obstacles for LGBTQ scientists

LGBTQ scientists experience career-damaging harassment according to the largest-ever survey recently published in AAAS’s Science Advances and featured in Nature.  The study of thousands of US-based researchers finds that those from sexual and gender minorities are more likely to experience workplace prejudice and harassment, fewer career opportunities and fewer resources.  Further, LGBTQ individuals experience greater stress from work leading to health problems, depressive symptoms, and insomnia. Help change this pattern! Advocate for institutional measures to address harassment. Please become an ally able to recognize and reduce these effects on talented colleagues and students by attending Safe Place (or Safe Zone) educational sessions.

ADVANCE Weekly Roundup: Documenting impacts of the pandemic on you.

As we start to see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, it is important to acknowledge that the effects will last for many years. In discussions of these effects, a recurring theme emerges: documenting impacts. This is not a one-time task: the lingering effects of the pandemic should be identified and reflected on annually and their impact on job performance and evaluation revisited. 

Today’s edition of the ADVANCE weekly roundup features a short article from the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence at Purdue University. Although it focuses on documenting impacts on faculty, it provides insights that are applicable to everyone. Importantly, it suggests that the list is indicative but not exhaustive – an acknowledgement that the pandemic has impacted everyone differently and that some of the impacts may not yet be recognized.

Equal Pay Day 2021 Marks Progress, Challenges

Women earn less than men do, on average. This difference, the gender wage gap, is approximately 18 % across all workers. The gap is even larger for women of color.

The problem is present even just one year from graduation. Just one year from college graduation, women make seven percent less than men, even after accounting for college major, occupation, economic sector, hours worked, marital status, GPA, type of undergraduate institution, institutional selectivity, age, geographic region and months unemployed since graduation (“The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap, AAUW, 2018).

Tomorrow (March 24) is Equal Pay Day (averaged for all women), a day that symbolizes the extra days women must work to catch up to what the average man earned the previous year. In 2020 Equal Pay Day was March 31, and in 2019 it was April 2, indicating that incremental progress is occurring.

Red is worn on this day as a symbol of how far women and minorities are “in the red.” Join the Copper Country League of Women Voters and other supporters for a “Red Out” to recognize Equal Pay Day.

Due to COVID-19 considerations, our usual cookies and literature event will not take place this year. We can all safely wear red, however.

February 26, 2021 ADVANCE Weekly Roundup

Cultures in academia were established more than a century ago when everyone hailed from the same demographic.  While cultures have slowly evolved, fair treatment according to student/faculty needs have not all been addressed which means inequity remains deeply rooted in academia. Systemic inequities can manifest in a number of ways, including the peer review process. In fact in some journals such as Econometrica, submit-accept times for female authored papers take six months longer to complete peer review (Hengel 2016). Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup highlights a guest editorial from the Journal of Engineering Education that grapples with the experience of systemic racism in peer review. It recounts the experiences of a Black, engineering education graduate student and her advisor and issues a call to action to confront and overcome systemic inequities in the academy.

Future faculty are the students at colleges and universities today. The bias in selection for success changes the demographics of potential faculty. The student debt crisis in the United States continues to rise to unprecedented levels with total student debt totalling in excess of $1.5 trillion. The burden of borrowing to finance higher education is not equitably distributed. Today’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup focuses on the impacts of “Borrowing While Black” and the factors that exacerbate the student debt crisis for Black Students. An emphasis on addressing this crisis can ensure that the benefits of college are more equitably distributed including that future faculty will be more diverse.

Dear Campus Community,

Racial equity has been at the forefront of national news for the last several months following the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Achieving racial equity on a national scale has to start small and must include equity in the workplace.

Did you know that almost ⅓ of American workers do not feel safe voicing their opinions about racial bias in the workplace? Or that 52% of Black American workers believe they have been treated unfairly at work because of their race compared to only 4% of white workers? These statistics and many more from SHRM’s Together Forward @ Work campaign show precisely why it is important to engage in discussions about race and racial equity in the workplace.

The ADVANCE team is asking you to step-up and lead the way in ensuring that the workplace at Michigan Tech is one of inclusivity and equity for people of all races. Today, we’re asking that each of you Take The Pledge to create an inclusive and equitable workplace.  When you take the pledge, please write your commitment or “I pledge” on your hand, take a photo of it and share the photo and your pledge statement (see example attached) with us via email (advance-mtu@mtu.edu). Our campus leaders were asked to sign on to this pledge last week. You can view their pledges via this link.We will be anonymously compiling their pledges and yours to create a collage to share in conjunction with University Marketing and Communications through our networks and on Twitter with #TogetherForwardAtWork to show the world that Michigan Tech is dedicated to creating not just any future, but one of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Lack of transparency is a primary complaint nationally among faculty who experience inequitable workloads. A potential solution is the development of faculty work activity dashboards organized at the departmental or college level. These dashboards can assist in identifying and correcting equity issues within your unit. Today’s Weekly Roundup features research from ADVANCE programs at the University of Maryland and University of Massachusetts, Amherst that breaks down the development and execution of these faculty work activity dashboards. ADVANCE at Michigan Tech supports the development of faculty work activity dashboards, such as providing assistance in identifying appropriate content, identifying areas of inequity, or resolving inequities which may be identified as a result of implementing these dashboards.

While the representation of women and minorities in higher education administrator roles is climbing, these individuals still face significant discrepancies in pay. Representation in primary roles is lower than in supporting administrative roles. “Women are paid less than men in nearly all administrative positions, as are people of color,” which is linked to how much value the person is perceived as contributing.  This week’s ADVANCE weekly roundup article sheds light on these pay and seniority gaps in higher education administration.

Microaggressions are “silent destroyers of a university’s climate.” They are often unintentional, indirect, or subtle instances in which a statement or action marginalizes an underrepresented group. Microaggressions affect people and groups long after the actual experience. Thus education and avoiding microaggressions is critical to improving campus climate and the focus of this week’s Weekly Roundup. This article from Academic Impressions breaks down two scenarios to help recognize what a microaggression might look like, what the impact can be, and provides a checklist to help someone before making a statement to avoid enacting a microaggression.

The focus of today’s ADVANCE Weekly Roundup article highlights that requesting pay history in job applications can increase bias and offer discrepancies. By simply ceasing to ask applicants about pay history, we can make significant strides toward a more equitable and inclusive hiring process. In fourteen states, this is ingrained into hiring laws; however Michigan is not among them. Therefore, the impetus lies with those running the hiring committees and extending offers to implement best practices.
