January 15, 2021 ADVANCE Weekly Roundup

Did you know that only one federal holiday has been designated as a national day of service? That holiday, Martin Luther King Jr Day, is coming up on Monday (Jan. 18) and in observance of Dr. King’s legacy, we’ve dedicated this week’s edition of the ADVANCE Weekly Roundup to highlighting resources for community service, racial justice, and equality. Please join ADVANCE at Michigan Tech and our partners in educating your colleagues while redoubling efforts to build a diverse, equitable, and intentionally inclusive campus community.

In recent weeks, the Black Lives Matter movement has demanded action to address systemic racism. This is an inclusive demand; it means that we need to bring the voices of all oppressed people to the table. This week, for our ADVANCE Weekly Roundup, we’re featuring an article that highlights the desire for indigenous voices to be heard and included in the anti-racism talks that are ongoing in the wake of continued resistance to the status quo. With Native representation in academic faculty even lower than black representation and our regional demographics, we feel these conversations and proactive inclusion activities are important.

If you read your American history book, you’ll be told that the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 effectively freed those enslaved in the Confederacy. The reality is that true emancipation did not come for another 3 years. On June 19, 1865, now referred to as Juneteenth, enforcement of Abraham Lincoln’s executive order finally reached Galveston, TX and liberated the last remaining slaves. Tomorrow is Juneteenth and in recognition of this, today’s ADVANCE Weekly Roundup features the Academics for Black Survival and Wellness Week activities beginning today. We encourage you to visit the website below, attend one or more of the virtual activities throughout the week, and learn more about what you can do to promote and adopt anti-racism actions for our students and our community.
