This year’s pool of applicants for the Friends of the Michigan Tech Library Graduate Archives Internship was the most competitive in recent memory. We’re delighted that Martin has joined us to process collections and provide departmental support! Read on to get to know him and what he’s excited to do this summer in his own words.

Hello!

My name is Martin K. I am thrilled to be starting as this summer’s Friends of the Michigan Tech Library Graduate Archives Intern. Earlier this month I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a MA in library and information studies (archives concentration). I received my BA in history from Northwestern University. I am originally from Connecticut.

I’ve been a history enthusiast for as long as I can remember, and my interest in archives stems from a desire to facilitate research. An area of special interest for me is participatory archives and how archives (especially digital archives) can learn from crowdsourcing efforts in other fields (e.g., citizen science projects).

Outside of archives, I enjoy spending time in nature. I am avid birdwatcher, and I enjoy hiking, camping, kayaking, and skiing. In addition, I recently began taking wildlife photographs.

A highlight of my first week in the UP was driving up the coast to Copper Harbor. I look forward to seeing more of the region’s beautiful scenery. And above all, I look forward to growing as an archivist this summer; I am very grateful for the opportunity to work in the MTU Archives.

Welcome, Martin! We’re happy to have you aboard and hope that you have a great summer in the Copper Country. If any of our readers will be stopping by the Michigan Tech Archives for a research appointment over the next few months, please give Martin a hearty welcome!
