Meet Your Major Nights

 The purpose of “Meet Your Major Night” is to explore the seven majors within the School of Business and Economics.  Faculty members will discuss what you can expect from each major and alumni will be available to describe their Michigan Tech experiences, careers, and plans for the future.  Sessions will be held for three evenings on October 24, 25, 26th starting at 6:00 pm in Fisher 131.

MEET YOUR MAJOR NIGHT

MANAGEMENT
Develop the skills to achieve efficiency, productivity, and profitability of both service and manufacturing operations. In this  versatile field, you will have an immediate impact on the operations of a business.  
  
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Analyze, design, develop,implement, and mange computer-based information systems which allow business and industry to streamline operations, create effective work environments, and compete in the marketplace.  

MARKETING
Coordinate, develop, promote, and deliver goods and services from the producer to the user. Gain skills in analytical thinking, technical communication, and dealing with people, as well as statistical and quantitative skills.  

OPERATIONS AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT  
Solve problems in all areas of business using current technology. Learn supply chain, project, and quality management methodologies and tools, as well as techniques including forecasting and decision-making.  

FINANCE
Help firms and other organizations raise and invest money, allocate funds to start or expand operations, manage the cash needed for daily operations, as well as analyze performance, and stimulate growth.  

ECONOMICS
Gain a strong analytical foundation to examine and solve economic, business, and social problems. Understand basic principles, as well as statistics, mathematics, finance, and other disciplines for economic decision making.  

ACCOUNTING
Collect, summarize, and communicate important financial information. Learn skills that combine important tools for investment, financial analysis, management decisions, and the best business planning practices.


Reminder: Last Day to Drop with a “W”

RE:  Last Day to Drop Fall ClassesAll drops must be done in person, in the Student Service Center.  Drops cannot be done via the web.

The last day to drop track B classes (those classes that begin on October 17, 2011) with a refund is Thursday, October 20, 2011.
The last day to drop track B classes with no grade is Wednesday, October 26, 2011.
The last day to drop track B classes with a “W” grade is Friday, November 11, 2011.
According to the University policy on late drops:  “After eighth week of the semester, a student may request a late drop from the Dean of Students Office, which will consider those requests that involve circumstances beyond the student’s control.”  Extenuating circumstances considered are prolonged illness, serious accidents and death in the immediate family or of a close friend, or similar situations beyond the students control.  All requests must be made in writing.  Instructions for late drops are available in the COMPASS office (Wadsworth Hall, G28), the Dean of Students Office (Administration Building 170) or on the web at http://www.admin.mtu.edu/dos/latedrop.htm
No late drops will be granted to avoid poor grades.

Michigan Tech's School of Business and Economics will host alumnus Dorthoy (Dot) Proux '86 on October 17 and 18 as part of the Scott Pattullo Visiting Executive Speaker Series. Proux will be the second speaker invited to campus this year following John Rockwell's visit . The series is designed to give students access to influential alumni in business and engineering fields. 

Dot will present to the community on Monday, October 17th in MUB Ballroom A from 6 - 7:30 pm her presentation is titled, "Making an impact in your first professional position: Keys to maximizing your personal brand and securing career opportunities in a globally diverse workplace."

Marketing Intern Position

We are considering a student for a part time paid internship to help us facilitate several projects in the Houghton area.  Specifically, the Campus Coupon Book that is distributed to both Michigan Tech University students faculty and staff, and also the same at Finlandia University.   JC Advertising is a creative “out of the box” guerilla marketing company that focuses on helping our customers bottomline through non-traditional low cost per impression marketing strategies and projects.  We print and distribute 10,000 books throughout both campuses by means of dorm mailboxes, orientation, and student bookstores.
 
The job would include but not be limited to:
 

    • Customer visitation to renew current advertisers
    • Farm new customers to participate in the upcoming year
    • Enter customer data into a CRM software

 
This internship will be paid on a commission basis upon collection of customer payment (which is up front).  The selected intern will be trained hands on until comfortable venturing out on their own.  Working hours will be flexible to an extent.
 
Candidates must be:
 

    • Self Motivated and able to work without a lot of structure
    • Confident, Friendly and Outgoing
    • Must have a vehicle for transportation
    • Must have a cell phone for communications
    • Have a grasp for marketing principles and advertising basics
    • Be able to learn quickly and develop your own style
    • Computer savvy
    • Able to meet deadlines

 
The successful candidate will receive:
 

    • Monetary compensation in the form of commission
    • Invaluable resume experience in the real world of small town marketing and advertising (specifically Guerilla Advertising).
    • CRM software experience
    • Consideration for further projects with JC Adverstising and possible future employment (we are a growing business).

 
This project will be after the new year begins but could develop earlier with the right candidate.


New Venture Comp. Meeting this Monday: $30,000 Prize Money!!

 

The New Venture Competition is the $30,000 business plan competition, that some of you may have heard of throughout the past couple of weeks.

Our current participants are looking to formulate teams for the competition, and we are looking for students that have experience, or an interest of obtaining experience in the following areas:

7 students for accounting
5 for marketing
7 for legal
5 for sales
3 for human resources
7 for financing
1 for IT

If you are interested in joining someones team for the competition, please consider attending our event on Monday, October 3rd at 6pm.

The event will be located in the Lakeshore Center, but we will provide busing from, and back to, the MUB at 5:50pm, and ~6:50pm respectfully.

The event will start off with current participants giving a 30 second pitch of the overall goal of their idea, and what kind of partners they are looking for.
