School of Business and Economics to compete in All-Nighter!

All Nighter Competition kicks off at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, February 6th!

Calling all School of Business and Economics students, faculty, staff and friends…  Winter Carnival is just around the corner and we want to invite you to join in on the fun!!  We have entered the School of Business and Economics in the all-nighter competition again this year.  We have done well in the past and hope to continue that streak this year!

The theme for Winter Carnival 2013 is “Heroes and Villians Find Their Powers, In These Frozen Winter Hours!”  For more Winter Carnival information and events check out the official website.  Our statue will include a superman symbol with the “S” being replaced with a “$”.  The quote we have selected is: Super students have the power to double your money in an hour.

The all-nighter is next Wednesday, February 6th starting at 4:00 pm. As the name suggests, we will be building all night long (or at least until we are satisfied with our design).  We will be providing  pizzas, coffee, hot cocoa, and some baked goods for all statue builders!

We hope to see you all next Wednesday even if it is just to socialize and kick off the event!

Tech MBA Online ranked 47th by US News & World Report

In 2013, Michigan Tech's online MBA placed in top third of all ranked business programs nationwide.

Article from Tech Today.  Written by Jenn Donovan, public relations director, January 15, 2013.

The MBA online program in Michigan Tech’s School of Business and Economics placed 47th of 197 online graduate business programs in new rankings released today by US News & World Report. Tech’s online master’s degree program in engineering also made the magazine’s 2013 national rankings, earning 41st place among 66 online graduate programs in engineering that were ranked.

“The Tech MBA Online program was created to provide an innovative curriculum guided by experienced and knowledgeable business faculty,” said Gene Klippel, dean of the School of Business and Economics. “Professionals looking to advance their career, even in a challenging economy, can benefit from learning and understanding technology and innovation within organizations. A ranking in the top 50 from US News confirms that our program is on track for continued success for students, our School and Michigan Tech.”

US News defines an online education program as one for which all the coursework can be completed via distance education courses that incorporate Internet-based learning technologies. Among criteria evaluated were graduation rate, class size, one-year retention rate, time to degree, graduate entrance exam scores and grade point averages of students, percentage of PhD and tenured faculty, and technologies and services available to students.

For the first time this year, US News added a peer assessment survey of deans and top distance learning higher education academics employed by schools ranked in 2012.

“It is a wonderful testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff that we have achieved these rankings,” said Graduate School Dean Jackie Huntoon. “I am happy to see that both the business and engineering online programs are getting the positive attention they deserve.”

“Michigan Tech’s online MBA program is really quite young, and already it is ranked in the top third of all ranked programs nationwide. This is a remarkable achievement,” Huntoon went on to say. “The number and quality of offerings in engineering continues to grow each year. I am continually impressed by the comments I hear from students and employers who tell me that they chose Michigan Tech because of our focus on real-world applications and because of the quality and commitment of our faculty.”

Fall 2012 Impact Magazine

Impact Magazine, Fall/Winter 2012

In this issue of Impact we explore the concept of networking and relationships leading to future opportunities for us around the world. The New Venture Competition, a partnership between Michigan Tech and Central Michigan University, is an excellent example of this effort (page 4) as is our work in project management (page 8), and other faculty-led competitions (pages 7 and 9).

From there, we focus on three alumni: Maggie Chen ’04 finds career success and a balanced family in the demanding world of international finance (page 11), Greg Horvath ’82 discovers what he refers to as “the biggest changes in information technology,” and Andy Storm ’99 combines engineering and business to help keep troops safe around the world (page 14).

Updates on campus include the new engineering management major and global business minor (page 16), a faculty-led market research project (page 18), and Dean Johnson’s award as the 2012 Michigan Teacher of the Year (page 19). Next we have an update on the Sam B. Tidwell red tie campaign from recent CPA recipients and our accounting faculty (page 22).

To round out this issue, the Tech MBA Online class of 2012 completes their degrees with an international capstone trip to Bangalore, India’s version of Silicon Valley (page 20). Two undergraduate students also provide their perspective on international travel by answering a few questions about their summer study abroad experiences in Germany and Spain (pages 26 and 27).
