Terry McNinch (Michigan Tech Transportation Institute Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP)) has received $22,264 from the Michigan Department of Transportation for “MDOT Rural Safety Forums-Presentations.”
Associate Professor Kris G. Mattila was elected chair of the Construction Safety Standards Commission, Department of Labor and Economic Growth, in November. Mattila represents the general public. Then-governor John Engler appointed him in July 1999 and again in March 2001. The Construction Safety Standards Commission has the authority, along with the director of the department, to promulgate construction safety standards in Michigan. It is the vision of the commission that Michigan become a national leader in safety for industry by incorporating the changing needs of new technologies and methods into standards.
James R. Mihelcic, civil and environmental engineering professor and co-director of the Sustainable Futures Institute, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Environmental Engineering & Science Professors (AEESP). Mihelcic begins his three-year term in October.
The mission of AEESP is to assist its members in the development and dissemination of knowledge in environmental engineering and science. AEESP also seeks to strengthen and advance the environmental engineering field through cooperation among academic and other communities. In 2002 Mihelcic was awarded AEESP’s Wiley Interscience Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Engineering & Science Education.
Thomas J. Van Dam has received a $176,000 contract from the Innovative Pavement Research Foundation for research titled “Concrete Mixes and Pavement Construction for De-Icing Facilities”

Assistant Professor David Watkins has received a $48,515 award from the United States Department of Defense–Army Corps of Engineers for his project, “Research on Overlake Rainfall Estimation for Lake Michigan and Lake St. Clair.”

Michigan Tech researchers, Professor Martin Auer , Associate Professor Judith Perlinger , Assistant Professor Casey Huckins (Bio-Sci) have received three grants totaling about $200,000 from the Michigan Great Lakes Protection Fund.
Associate Professor Judith Perlinger has received a $74,989 grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency for her project, “Comparison of Technologies for PBT Flux Determination.”
Associate Professor William Sproule has received a $74,920 award from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Isle Royale National Park, for his project, “Market Demand/Financial Feasibility for an Alternative Transportation System–Keweenaw National Historical Park.”
