Career Fair Prep & More!

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of The Commute! I hope you all had a great first week and aren’t too overwhelmed with homework yet. I also hope you had some time to check out some of the great events that were going on last week. We also have some great events coming up for this week.

Are you a business major? If you are, make sure to check out the Business 1100 Mixer on Monday, September 10th at 7:30 p.m. in MUB Ballroom A. This event is put on for the first year business majors to meet some faculty and create bonds with returning SBE students, so I highly recommend that you attend no matter what year you are! It is a great networking opportunity, also.

Are you interested in studying abroad? If you are, there are going to be two Study Abroad 101 sessions that will be held this week to help give you some more information on what you need to do for the process. These sessions will be held on Tuesday, September 11th at 11:00 a.m. and Thursday, September 13th at 2:00 p.m. Both of these sessions will be held in the Administrative Building, Room 200.

Another very beneficial session that will be held this week is a “How to Start Your resume” session on Wednesday, September 11th. It will be very helpful for you to go to if you plan on going to Career Fair this year. Career Fair is Wednesday, October 3rd, so get a start on your resume by going to this workshop.  This session will be at 5:00 p.m. in Admin 220 (Career Services).

There will also be a very important speaker coming onto campus on Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Rozsa. Heather Abbott is coming to campus to speak to everyone about her tragic incident at the Boston Marathon bombing and how that has affected her time in the workforce. This will be a very empowering story, and it will give some insight on what it was like for her to conquer disability in the workplace. I highly recommend going to this event and giving Heather some support for telling her story!

Get on the right track early in the semester and set your health as a priority!  Stop on by the Health Fair, Thursday, September 13 from 4:00-6:00 p.m., for access to complimentary snacks, screenings, campus and local resources, prizes and giveaways, Animal Assisted Therapy Dogs,  and much much more!

If you had a stressful first and second week, make sure to take advantage of Yoga Night on Thursday, September 13th. This will be held at 7:00 p.m. on the lawn between Rekhi and Dow.

If you are a sports fan, we also have some sporting events that are coming up this weekend! If you haven’t heard, our Michigan Tech Football team won an exciting game in overtime this past Saturday! It was a great game to cheer on our Huskies. Make sure to come to their next home game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Davenport. Our Women’s Volleyball team also has two matches this weekend. On Friday, they play Northwoods at 7:00 p.m. up at the Wood Gym. Saturday, they play against Ferris State at 4:00 p.m. Ferris State ended up placing number one in the conference last season, so this should be a great game to attend!

Finally, if you haven’t heard of the MUB Film Board yet, you have to make sure to check them out. This student organization streams movies each weekend in Fisher 135. Admission to the movies are only $3.00. Can you believe it? Newer movies only $3.00, what a deal! Concessions are also only $1.00. For all of you commuters out there, I plan on scheduling a commuter event for Saturday, September 22nd at 5:30 p.m. The movie for this day is “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”. I would like to invite all of you commuters to join me at the movies this day and hopefully we can get to know each other while enjoying a movie from our very own Film Board! The movie starts at 5:30, so I plan on meeting by Aftermath Cafe in Fisher Hall at 5:00 p.m. I will also send out an email next week for all of those that may be interested in joining me.

I hope you have some time to check out some of these events and I look forward to hopefully meeting some of you at Jurassic World!

Have a great week and stay tuned for another edition of….
