Welcome back Commuters to another edition of The Commute..

This week we have some more great events that you should check out! But, before I list off those, I want to remind you guys that we have so many different Learning Centers on campus that you should definitely take advantage of if you feel like you are not 100% understanding your classes. Midterms are coming up in a few weeks, so make sure you are ready for those!

Are you registered to vote? If not, the Secretary of State Mobile Office will be on campus this Monday, September 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the sidewalk outside of Hamar House. So make sure to sign up with them if you are not registered already!

I’m sure most of you have seen the CareerFEST Tents set up outside with different companies on campus lately. This is because Career Fair is coming up and these companies are here to talk to you if you are interested in going into their specific field. This Tuesday, September 18th, is Management & Financial Services Day. The companies attending are as follows: Northern Trust, Walmart, Superior National Bank, and Miners Bank. If you are interested in one of these businesses for a job in the future, or even for an internship this coming summer, make sure to check these companies out in the tent from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Walmart will also be holding its own information session on that same day from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom B2.

Again, if you are interested in studying abroad, there are more information sessions this week that you can attend. On Wednesday, September 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., there will be Study Abroad representatives under the CareerFEST tent, so make sure you talk to them if you have any questions or interest in studying abroad!

If you still haven’t found a student organization to join that really suits you, go on out and attend Outdoor Venture Crew’s meeting. This is on Wednesday, September 19th from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in Fisher 130. What the Outdoor Venture Crew does is travels to a new location each week to enjoy nature and make some new friends in the process! Their trips range anywhere from a short hike, or even camping trips. So, if you are an outdoors lover, I highly recommend checking out this Student Organization.

Another event to check out to prep for Career Fair is Energy & Environment Day. The companies that you can visit during Energy & Environment Day are: DTE Energy, Wolverine Power Cooperative, Systems Control, and Hemlock Semiconductor. If you are interested in any of these companies, make sure to visit them under the CareerFEST tent on Thursday, September 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Another event that is coming up this weekend is the 19th Annual Michigan Tech Drag Show. Entertainers from all around the country join together to bring their Vegas style impersonation to our small community. I went to this event last year and it was very entertaining, so I highly recommend going. This event is only $3.00 for Michigan Tech students, so make sure you bring your ID and buy your ticket quick, because this is a very popular event. Tickets can be purchased at the SDC ticket office, or the Rozsa Box office will be open 2 hours prior to the show if you would like to wait until then.

Another event that one of our Student Organizations is hosting is an annual Pi Mile 5k for Charity. This event always takes place during Homecoming. This event will be hosted by the Triangle Fraternity and homemade pies will also be available for purchase by the sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta. If you’re not a runner? That’s okay! You are also able to purchase pies to pie one of the brothers of the Triangle Fraternity, so there’s more than one way to enjoy this event. This event is going on Sunday, September 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Registration is $10 online or $15 at the event. See for more information and to register.

Also, another reminder that on Saturday, September 22nd, I will be attending the Film Board movie Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at 5:30 p.m. You are all welcome to attend this movie with me and support our very own Film Board! I will be waiting by the old Aftermath Cafe in Fisher until 5:15 p.m. so please try to show up by then if you would like to join myself and other commuter students!

Have a great week and stay tuned for another edition of…

The Commute
