Happy Homecoming!

Hello everyone & welcome back to another edition of.. The Commute

I hope you are all doing well so far this semester, and I hope you’ve been able to take some time to yourself to relax.

As I have said before, Career Fair is coming up on Wednesday, October 3rd, so there will be a lot of events going on in the next two weeks to help you prepare for this. On Monday, September 24th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. there will be people in the MUB Ballroom helping you with everything Career Fair. Whether it being fixing up your resume, interview tips, or even coming up with a name tag, someone will be there to assist you. Make sure you attend and prepare for Career Fair because it comes up quick, especially since it is around the time of midterms this year. Additionally, there will also be a Resume & Interview Blitz on Thursday, September 27th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the MUB Commons. Finally, on Friday, September 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the MUB Commons there will Mock Interviews taking place so you can practice before the real thing. These are schedule 30 minute slots, so if you are interested in a spot, there will sign up times on Handshake.

Another thing that is going on is Homecoming! If you are first years, you may have not heard of the homecoming shirt swap. This event is put on to gather clothing to bring to the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter and New Beginnings Angel Mission. What you can do is bring a lightly worn piece of clothing, or a winter accessory to the MUB circle on Monday, September 24th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and the staff will trade you for a 2018 Homecoming T-Shirt. Make sure to stop on by as soon as you can because this event is only “while supplies last”!

Again, we also have more companies coming to campus and will be under the CareerFEST tent. This week we have Manufacturing Day on Tuesday, September 25th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If this is a future career path you are interested in, make sure to stop by. There will be many companies at this event including: AZCO Construction, Inc, Brady Corporation, Greenheck Fan, Georgia Pacific, Plexus, Kimberly-Clark, Winsert, Gentex Corporation, Neenah, Northeast (Brattleboro), Systems Control and Procter & Gamble.

If you are a General Business Major, even a First Year Marketing Major, make sure to attend the BS in Market Information Session. At this event, you can network with current Marketing students and staff, and learn about different career opportunities for this field. This event will be held in the Academic Office Building (AOB 101) on Wednesday, September 26th from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

As I said before, this week is Homecoming. One of our annual events that we have as tradition here at Michigan Tech is cardboard boat races. These will be at 4:00 p.m. at the Houghton Waterfront Park (Chutes and Ladders). I would highly recommend going to this, because it is hilarious to watch students and faculty race in cardboard boats in the water. Bonnie Gorman even raced last year! There will also be a Homecoming Tailgate before the Football Game on Saturday, September 29th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be free food and fun for students before the game kicks off at 1:00, so make sure to stop by and get some lunch and cheer on our Huskies against Saginaw Valley State!

I hope you all have a great week, and keep in mind to start studying for exams and preparing for Career Fair. Next week I’ll give you some study tips to prepare for midterms!

Stay tuned next week for another edition of..
