Stay Warm!

Hello Commuters and welcome back to another edition of…

The Commute

Make sure to stay warm this week, as it will be very cold within the next few days.

Winter Carnival is approaching soon, which means that there will be some more events going on for it within the next few weeks.

This week, on Tuesday, January 29th from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. there will be Ice Bowling at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. During ice bowling, one member will sit on a sled while the rest of the team members will slide them down the ice into the pins. A lot of these events are for Winter Carnival special participating organizations, but that does not mean that you cannot go and cheer on your favorite organization! On Friday, February 1st from 6:00-8:30 p.m. there will also be Speed Skating as a part of Winter Carnival. This will also be held at the Ice Arena. You may have seen a lot of different flyers around bulletin boards on campus, and those are for the Queens Coronation! There are many contenders sponsored by organizations on campus and local businesses that are running for Michigan Tech Winter Carnival Queen this year. Join this Queen Coronation with Blue Key and see who will be crowned on Saturday, February 2nd from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

There will be a Career Fair again this Spring, so that means that it is time to touch up your resume (especially if you are a first year who just completed their first semester). On Wednesday, January 30th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. there will be a Resume Lab for First-years in Career Services (220 Admin). You can come anytime during the period, just make sure to bring your laptop!

Finally, the organization that will be sponsored in this article is… The Michigan Tech Pep Band! If you have ever been to a Michigan Tech Athletic game, I am sure you have seen (and heard) the Pep Band in their yellow and black striped overalls. The Pep Band knows how to get the crowd going, and their chants are always creative. If you have played an instrument in high school, or even in your free time, I would highly recommend joining the Pride of Pastyland!

That is all for this week’s blog. I hope you get to enjoy some Winter Carnival activities (without being too cold).

Stay tuned next week for another edition of…

Comedy Central (with Stephen Agyei)

Hello Commuters and welcome back to another edition of…

The Commute

I hope you all had a great first week back.

This week, on Thursday, January 24th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. there will be a Study Away Programs Information Session if you are interested in studying abroad. You can learn all about how to apply, and places you could potentially study.

On Friday, January 25th from 10:00-11:00 p.m. there will be a Comedian Stephen Agyei in the MUB Ballroom. He has opened for a lot of different people on tours (such as Roseanne), and he will be here for a night of comedy on Friday night. Make sure to stop by and see the man who has been most memorably known for “the whitest smile in Denver”.

On Saturday, January 26th from 1:00-6:00 p.m. there will be a Dodgeball Tournament at the MTU Racquetball Courts, hosted by the Memorial Union Board. This Dodgeball tournament is teams of 6 with the opportunity to win a $25-$30 gift card each. Teams that are signing up can have their team captain email MUBboardFGchair@gmail.com with your team name. If you are interested in this tournament, gather up a team and try to win some gift cards!

Winter Carnival is approaching soon, and there are already some events coming up this weekend. There will be Ice Curling on Saturday, January 26th from 3:00-9:00 p.m. at the Calumet Drill House. There will be snow volleyball on Sunday, January 27th at 10:00 a.m. and Snoccer (Snow Soccer) at 12:00 p.m. These winter carnival events are open to student organizations, but fellow Huskies can also come and cheer on your favorite organization.

I hope you all have a great week. Winter Carnival is coming soon, so make sure to stay tuned for all of the events going on during that week and keep an eye out for our featured Student Organization in next week’s blog.Stay tuned next week for another edition of…

The Commute

Welcome back!

Hello Commuters and welcome back to another edition of…

The Commute

Also, welcome back for another semester! I hope your break went well and you got a much needed rest that you deserve. But, now it’s time to get back in the grind.

Just a reminder that if you need any assistance for all things commuting, or even just a general question about Michigan Tech, I am here for any questions through the commuters email (commuters@mtu.edu), or during office hours which can be found at: https://www.mtu.edu/success/academic/mentoring/commuter/ ; I currently will not be in the office for my office hours, so if you would like to meet with me during those times, please send me an email and we can set up an appointment!

For my blogs this semester, I will be sticking with the usual format (a few events that I think you will enjoy), but every other week I will also have a new section where I will talk about one student organization that I think is a big part of Michigan Tech. There are so many awesome student organizations on campus, so I think by giving you a little information on them it will help spark some interest and help you become more involved on campus.

This week at the SDC, there will be HuskiesFit Dollar Days. For those of you that do not know what that is, it is where they have spring fitness classes for only $2! There are many different classes to try out this week (Zumba, POUND, etc.), so I would highly encourage going and starting off the new semester (and the new year) on the right foot. For 6am classes, you can pay at the door, but for other classes you can get a ticket from the ticket office downstairs.

This week, our basketball Huskies are back at the Wood Gym for a doubleheader on Thursday and Saturday. The women play at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday against Grand Valley State, and the men follow at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the women’s game tips off at 1:00 p.m. against Davenport with the men’s game following at 3:00 p.m.

Finally, as I said above, I will be having a spotlight section for a student organization every other week. This week, the organization is actually having an information session, so it would be perfect timing if you are interested in this organization. This organization is The Michigan Tech Engineering Ambassadors. This student organization has the goal of spreading knowledge and hands on experiences with engineering to middle and high school students and help spark interest for the field. This organization can also help you grow your communication skills since they do a lot of presentations and activities with younger children. This information session will be held on Thursday, January 17th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Fisher 129. You can also contact the advisor Jaclyn Johnson at jenesbit@mtu.edu if you are interested in being added to the email list or if you have any questions!

I hope you all have a great first week back!
