Software Carpentry in Python Workshop Is February 20-24

Michigan Tech will host an online Software Carpentry in Python workshop February 20-24, 2023, daily from 3-5:30 p.m. EST. All Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend this free workshop.

This workshop covers basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, and task automation. The curriculum includes:

  • The Unix Shell
  • Version Control with Git
  • Plotting and Programming with Python

The target audience is learners who have little to no prior computational experience. Workshop instructors place a priority on creating a friendly environment to empower researchers and enable data-driven discovery. Even those with some experience will benefit, as the goal is to teach not only how to do analyses, but how to manage the process to make it as automated and reproducible as possible.

Please sign up by Friday, February 10, 2023. Space is limited and will likely fill quickly. Register here.

Confirmation of your registration will be emailed by Tuesday, February 14.  If more participants sign up than there are seats available, priority will be given to graduate students.

Questions? Please email Laura Brown at lebrown@mtu.edu.

This workshop is the first of a series of workshops to be held this Spring.

  • February 20-24, 3-5:30 p.m. Software Carpentries in Python, online
  • Tentative March 6-7. 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Data Carpentries: Ecology in Python, online
  • Tentative Mar. 20-24, 3-5:30 p.m. Software Carpentries in R, online
  • Tentative May 22-23, 9 a.m.-4:30p.m. Data Carpentries: Ecology in R, in person

Additional announcements will be made for these future events as they are confirmed.

The Carpentries is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives. They teach skills that are immediately useful for researchers, using lessons and datasets that allow researchers to quickly apply what they have learned to their own work. I am really excited about using the Software Carpentry curriculum here to help our graduate students and faculty become more efficient in their research.
