JUMP and STEM Competition

JUMP (Join the discussion, Unveil innovation, Make connections, Promote tech-to-market) into STEM is accepting applications for the 2020-21 competition!

College and university students are encouraged to participate in JUMP by forming a two- to four-person team to address current challenges in the building industry. Students can learn about a challenge topic and respond to it by developing a problem statement and a technical solution with a technology-to-market plan. Applicants must apply in Zintellect in the Building Technologies internship opportunity and upload a response to jumpintostem.org no later than November 13. Finalists will present solutions during a final competition and compete for a paid summer 2021 internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) or the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

2020-21 Challenges can be found online at JUMP into STEM. Topics for this year’s competition include:

  1. Advanced Building Construction Methods
  2. Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings (GEB)
  3. Building Energy Audits for Residential or Commercial Buildings

Co-led by ORNL and NREL with support from the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office, JUMP is open to both undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at a U.S. college or university. The goal of JUMP is to attract a diverse group of innovative students to building science research and address some of the current challenges facing the industry. Diversity goals include encouraging participation from student groups who are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) as well as teams consisting of a broad variety of majors.

The future of transportation holds great promise, as well as new challenges. All modes of transportation rely on radiofrequency technology for Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) capabilities. Are you ready to be involved with this capability that affects the lives of people across the nation everyday?

Two post-graduate research project and developmental opportunities are currently available at the U.S. Department of Transportation. The appointments will be served within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) in Washington, DC.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participants will have the opportunity to conduct research on existing and emerging technologies, processes, and approaches for communications, navigation, and surveillance technologies that can be used to enhance the future of transportation. This research includes navigation and radiofrequency spectrum technologies for all modes of transportation and looking to the future with the role these technologies will play for automated vehicles. Research also supports radio frequency spectrum management, engineering, and analysis in close coordination with other DOT modal administrations to address issues of harmful frequency interference and operational degradation to transportation applications.

Finally, the participants will have the chance to evaluate and assess backup and Complementary Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technologies that can be used for aviation, maritime, and/or surface transportation in the event of a degradation or disruption to GPS and the best mechanism to implement those technologies (e.g., Public Private Partnership, Service Level Agreement, etc.).

Who are we?  We are the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) where we are responsible for coordinating the US DOT’s research programs and are charged with advancing the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation’s transportation system. One of these cross-cutting areas within OST-R is the Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) and Spectrum Management Program.

Global Remote Internships

Work from home (WFH)While there is a lot of uncertainty due to the evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, we wanted to ensure that career-driven students don’t miss out on the chance to gain real-world work experiences and the networking opportunities that come with a summer internship.

To help with this, International Studies Abroad (ISA) created Global Remote Internships.

The program takes advantage of the recent telecommuting push and provides students with the chance to gain practical 21st century skills and international experience without leaving their home. They’ll have the chance to work with a company in one of six countries across Asia, Europe, and the Pacific.

Students have the opportunity to either participate in a group project—working remotely alongside other students to complete the project—or in an individual placement working directly with a supervisor at an organization to complete a project. In both cases, participants will have a structured program that includes a mentor or career coach to ensure that they maintain engagement and contribute at their full potential.

In addition to being able to select from three unique program options, students will also have the option to receive college credit.

Summer Courses in Visual and Performing Arts

Dear Students,

I wanted to let you know of exciting course offerings that the Visual and Performing Arts Department will be giving in the Summer.  All of our courses will be online and flexible for students to participate wherever they might be.

We have two classes that will be offered for the first time online in the summer.
New to our offering this year:
FA2110 Outdoor Sculpture (Track B):  The class will focus on making works of art outside, and — because of the world we’re in — it will also include lots of opportunities for creating connections with community (even at a distance). We’ll learn from environmental artists and artists whose work brings people together, and you’ll make your own works of art, wherever you are.

This is on the HASS List.

FA 2701 Drafting for the Entertainment Industry (Track B):  Focus on design and technical techniques for views such as: ground plans, elevations, sections, detail drawings, orthographic projections, scale perspective drawings. Introduces industry-specific CAD programs.  A great introduction to computer aided drafting.

This course is on the STEM restricted list for General Education.

As in years past we are offering a number of courses that satisfy the HASS Goal 4 Core Requirements.  This year we will have courses in art, music, and sound.

FA 2330 Art Appreciation (Track A)FA 2520 Music Appreciation (sections in Track A and B)

FA 2720 Sound in Art and Science (Track B)
Two other Art classes will give opportunities for students to study history or to work with studio art faculty in gaining skills in drawing.

All of these classes are on the HASS list.
FA2150 Creative Drawing Processes (Track B):  Ever wanted to learn the skills of observation and drawing.  This class will introduce you to a number of techniques that will lay a foundation for creative drawing that you can use throughout your lives.

FA3330 Art History Prehistory to the Renaissance (Track B)
Watching a lot of films during the COVID-19 quarantine?

Looking to diversify your playlists over the summer.  Please consider a number of course in music that will be offered (all from the HASS list):

FA 2222 Film Music (Track A)

FA 3560 Music History (Track A)

FA 3625 History of Rock (Track A)

FA 3630 Beatles and Beach Boys (Track B)

We will also have private instruction in guitar/mandolin/bass/banjo or piano available as well (FA2570).  These courses can count .5 credits towards co-curricular requirements for graduation.
We also have a one-credit offering that gives a broad overview of dramatic literature for the theatre,

FA3880 Readings in Dramatic Literature (Offered over the entire summer).

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions,
Jared
