Combine Sections, Access Bb Content, & Publish your Course

Canvas is Michigan Tech’s new Learning Management System (LMS).  You can log into Canvas at courses.mtu.edu, and access information about Canvas at the Canvas One Stop page .  All the tools you have used on the Course Tools page at coursestools.mtu.edu, like the Combine Canvas Sections tool and grade submission links, are still there and functioning with Canvas.

Accessing old Blackboard courses migrated into Canvas

Your new, blank Canvas courses for teaching Fall 2012 classes will be on the top of your Courses list in Canvas, and you can access your old Blackboard (Bb) courses migrated into Canvas from your Canvas Courses list too.  Hover over your Courses (or Courses & Groups) menu, and then click on View all courses at the very bottom.  Your old Bb courses will be on the bottom of that list, under “Past Enrollments.” Video Demo: Find your Bb Courses in Canvas. You’ll find the migrated version of your Bb Home Page by clicking on Pages from the menu on the left.  Other course content will migrate as referenced in this Conversion Chart.  To use that content, you’ll want to copy it into another Canvas course.  See How do I import content from another Canvas course?

Publishing your Canvas Course

Finally, you will need to Publish your Canvas course in order for your students to be able to see and access it.  See How do I publish my course? for directions on publishing your course.  It only takes a couple of clicks!For more information or help with Canvas at Michigan Tech, visit the Canvas One Stop page.

You should be able to access many of your old Blackboard (Bb) courses migrated into Canvas from your Canvas Courses menu now.  To do so, log in to Canvas, then hover over your Courses (or Courses & Groups) menu and click on View all courses at the very bottom.  Your old Bb courses will be on the bottom of that list under “Past Enrollments.”

Once inside you’ll find the migrated version of your Blackboard Home Page by clicking on Pages from the course tools menu on the left.  Other course content will migrate to the Canvas version of that tool or function, as described in this Conversion Chart.

Two More Canvas 101: Introduction to the Canvas LMS Workshops from eLearning

eLearning Offers Canvas 101: Introduction to the Canvas LMS

Canvas has been selected as the university’s learning management system (LMS). eLearning is offering introductory training workshops to provide instructors, and others who support instruction, with the essential information necessary to begin building their Canvas courses.

The one-hour sessions will run from 5 minutes after the hour until 5 minutes before the next hour. After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Log into Canvas
  • Set Profile and Notifications
  • Navigate Canvas Interface
  • Upload a File
  • Create a Basic Page, Module and Assignment
  • Post Syllabus
  • Set Home Page Layout

eLearning instructors Tom Freeman, Jeff Toorongian and Jeannie DeClerck will lead the training sessions in the Van Pelt and Opie Library instructional classrooms #242 and #244, behind the second floor elevator near the Skyway to Rekhi Hall.

Upcoming Canvas 101 session dates, times, and locations:

Winter Carnival Canvas Course Building Walk-in Session

Thursday, February 9, 10:00am to 12 noon. Library Instruction Room 244

Instructors and course designers are invited to attend an informal Canvas course building and design session being hosted by eLearning. This session will be in Van Pelt and Opie Library Room 244 (in the hallway behind the 2nd floor elevator) on Thursday, February 9 from 10:00am-12:00 noon.  Computers will be available for use.

Feel free to drop-in and come and go as you please. No registration necessary. You can work on building and designing your Canvas course(s) along with your peers, share your ideas and experiences, and meet eLearning staff members in a relaxed and open environment. No formal presentation or instruction will be conducted, but the eLearning staff will be on hand to answer questions and share ideas along with you.

Spring 2012 courses loaded into Canvas

Michigan Tech I.T. has successfully loaded Spring 2012 courses into Canvas now.  Instructors will see their courses on their course list when they log into Michigan Tech’s Canvas at https://mtu.instructure.com/login

Those Canvas courses remain unpublished so students will not see them on their course list or be able to access them until instructors decide to publish their Canvas course. Student enrollments into those courses have yet to be loaded.
