Design Expo Winners for 2019

More than 1000 students in Enterprise and Senior Design showcased their work last Thursday, April 18 at Design Expo and competed for awards. A panel of judges, made up of distinguished corporate representatives, community members and Michigan Tech staff and faculty, critiqued the projects. The College of Engineering and the Pavlis Honors College is pleased to announce the following winners.

The Enterprise Awards were developed to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts and accomplishments of Enterprise students, faculty, staff, and sponsors in the following categories:

Student Awards

  • Outstanding Leadership
  • Rookie Award
  • Innovative Solutions Award
  • Industry/Sponsor Relations

Faculty/Staff/Sponsor Awards

More detailed descriptions of the awards, as well as eligibility criteria, can be found here.

Enterprise students, advisors, faculty and staff can nominate deserving candidates by submitting this nomination form. Nomination deadline has been extended to 5pm on Wednesday, April 3. Nominators may collect up to three letters of support from others to strengthen their nomination. Each support letter should be no longer than one page, single-spaced. Student nominees must be currently enrolled in the Enterprise Program in order to be considered for an award.

An awards committee comprised of faculty and staff involved in the Enterprise Program will review nominations and select winners based on how well they support the given award criteria. Award recipients will receive a framed award certificate, lapel pin, and $100 cash prize (sponsors will receive a University memento in lieu of cash). All nominees will be recognized, and awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Design Expo on April 18, 2019 at 3:15pm in the MUB Ballroom.


Enterprise Day – March 26

Do you know students interested in learning more about Enterprise at Michigan Tech? Tell them to come to Enterprise Day on Tuesday, March 26 from 6-9pm in the Wads Annex. Program staff and students from various Enterprise teams will be on hand to answer questions. Root beer floats will be served. Check out the image below for all of the Enterprise teams that will be in attendance.

2. ENT2961 (2 credits) & ENT2962 (1 credit) are approved on the Restricted HASS list. Please see your academic advisor for more details on applying these toward your degree.

Industry Speaker to Visit from Altair

The Enterprise Program will be hosting Altair’s Training and EDU Technical Relations Manager, Erik Larson, November 14 and 15 for a two part industry speaker series event. On Wednesday, November 14 from 1-3pm in the Active Learning Center (MEEM120) Erik Larson will provide an overview of Altair’s revolutionary, easy to use, structural optimization and motion analysis tool, Inspire.  Inspire offers a simple interface that will allow the user to quickly and easily prepare and solve Finite Element Analysis problems to aid in the engineering and light weighting of static and motion based systems. Inspire leads Altair’s suite of software that promotes their philosophy of simulation driven design. Attend this seminar and start creating intelligent designs for your senior design and enterprise projects. This session is open to all levels of students and no prior FEA experience is necessary. Instructions for downloading the FREE, fully functional student edition of Inspire will be provided at the seminar as well.

On Thursday, November 15 from 10am-12pm and 2-4pm in M&M 718A students will have the ability to meet with Erik to get support and guidance on the application of the Altair software suite to current projects.

Erik Larson (’91 BSME) is Altair’s Training and EDU Technical Relations Manager. He is responsible for managing and conducting both online and instructor-led trainings for the United States. Additionally, Erik acts as a technical liaison for the Altair EDU outreach program, helping universities discover how the Altair suite of tools can enrich their curriculum and training faculty and students in the tools. Erik has over 25 years of experience conducting FEA structural, optimization and crash analysis. 


Now Accepting Applications for Fall Carnahan Enterprise Scholarship

The Enterprise Program is now accepting Fall 2018 applications for the Carnahan Enterprise Scholarship. This scholarship is open to Business and Humanities majors who are enrolled in the Enterprise Program. Please review the scholarship description and application form for details. The deadline for applications is 5pm Friday, October 19 (week 7).


Supermileage Systems Enterprise takes 1st place in Design, 8th Overall, in 2018 SAE Supermileage Competition

sae supermileage competitionMichigan Tech’s Supermileage Systems Enterprise competed in the 2018 SAE Supermileage Competition in Marshall, MI this summer. SAE Supermileage, an engineering design competition for undergraduate and graduate students, provides participants the opportunity to strengthen their engineering design and project management skills.  The goal for SAE Supermileage is to develop and construct a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle that complies with the competition rules. The vehicles run a specified course to obtain the highest combined kilometers per liter (miles per gallon) rating. Students must complete a written report and verbal presentation during competition.

There were 29 teams that participated in the 38th SAE Supermileage Competition representing the U.S., Canada, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Michigan Tech’s Supermileage Systems Enterprise placed 1st for overall design with a score of 430 out of 500 based on their written report and verbal presentation. Their first competition run was a success, reaching a fuel economy of 425mpg. Tech placed 8th overall based on the fuel economy results, as well as their design report and presentation.

Prior to competition, the team was missing key testing milestones and needed several students to work remotely and on campus after Spring semester ended. In the process, Supermileage Systems Enterprise team members discovered several issues that required them to shelve their new clutch design, simplify the electrical system, and revert to a mechanical throttle. This experience reinforced the importance of testing, troubleshooting, project management, and perseverance. “We have much to be proud of. Our ability to get through technical inspection much faster this year was a result of better preparation and simplifying our designs,” shared Rick Berkey, Supermileage Systems Enterprise Advisor. The design work this year lays the ground work for an even  more competitive vehicle in 2019. Every student member of Supermileage Systems Enterprise furthered their learning and personal/professional development through an experience that simply cannot be duplicated in the classroom.
