More Information on COVID-19 Visitor Symptom Tracking Form

We have received a number of questions regarding yesterday’s Tech Today article on campus visitors and the COVID-19 Visitor Symptom Tracking Form.

Beginning July 27, we request that all Michigan Tech guests and visitors complete the form. This includes those visiting the Van Pelt and Opie Library, A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, Portage Lake Golf Course, Campus Bookstore, University Images, and other retail outlets, as well as those visiting academic or office spaces. Ice arena patrons will also be required to complete the form when the facility opens to the community.

Return to Campus: Visitors

On Monday (July 27), Michigan Tech enters Step Three of our Return to Campus Plan. In this final step, we resume campus operations at the level at which the University will function when students return, and transition to the Health and Safety Levels system that we will maintain from the fall semester forward.

In addition to the return of students and University employees, Step Three allows for campus visitation. Joel Isaacson, senior associate athletic director, said while visitors to campus are allowed, all visitors must fill out a COVID-19 Visitor Tracking Form.

Moving to Final Step of Return to Campus Plan

On Monday, July 27, Michigan Tech will enter the final step of our Return to Campus Plan. Step Three concludes our return to campus and marks our transition to the Health and Safety Levels system that we will maintain from the fall semester forward.

Beginning July 27, we plan to resume campus operations at the level at which Michigan Tech will function when students return. Previous expectations outlined in Steps One and Two remain in effect, including enhanced hygiene and social distancing protocols. Of course, those who need to work from home due to health concerns are encouraged to do so, using either a flexible work agreement with their supervisor or a COVID-19 accommodation.

Face Covering 101: Things to Remember

During the COVID-19 pandemic, much has been written, discussed, and even argued about the use of face coverings. Last month, Michigan Tech entered into Step Two of our Return to Campus Plan. It is important to remember that the requirements for wearing face coverings outlined in Step One — “Individuals must wear their face covering at all times indoors with the only exception being a fixed wall room with a closed door” — are still in effect for Step Two.

“Employees and students who are not able to medically tolerate a face covering should reach out for an appropriate accommodation,” said Sarah Schulte, general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees. Schulte said employees should contact the ADA Coordinator, while students should contact Student Disability Services.

In spite of the new realities imposed by COVID-19, the MTU Flex team is working hard to assure the Michigan Tech experience is excellent for our students, faculty and staff this fall. There will be new expectations of our entire campus community, requiring extra effort from everyone. There will also be a need to maintain flexibility as circumstances change. But, I am confident that by working together, we can provide a healthy and safe campus environment along with an excellent academic experience. Live Town Hall on Return to Campus Plans Planned for May 11

In preparation for an on-time, face to face fall semester start, a cross functional campus team is finalizing the details of Michigan Tech’s return to campus plan. 

Michigan Tech’s plan is predicated on the state’s guidance for a phased re-opening, incorporates best practices as suggested by state, federal, and non profit agencies and takes into account other factors to ensure the health and safety of our entire community.
