Face Shields for Instructional Use

To help ensure the safety of our classroom environments, Michigan Tech is producing a face shield specifically designed for instructors to use while teaching face-to-face in a classroom. The shield permits visibility of the instructor’s full face, both for in-person students and those who may be joining via video conference, and is sufficiently comfortable to be worn for more than an hour. 

David Holden and John Schneiderhan from the Van Pelt and Opie Library and many others have worked tirelessly over the summer months to develop the “teaching shield.” Their work began with a successful open-source model for medical personnel — the same model the University modified to produce a face shield for frontline COVID-19 responders.

Face Covering 101: Things to Remember

During the COVID-19 pandemic, much has been written, discussed, and even argued about the use of face coverings. Last month, Michigan Tech entered into Step Two of our Return to Campus Plan. It is important to remember that the requirements for wearing face coverings outlined in Step One — “Individuals must wear their face covering at all times indoors with the only exception being a fixed wall room with a closed door” — are still in effect for Step Two.

“Employees and students who are not able to medically tolerate a face covering should reach out for an appropriate accommodation,” said Sarah Schulte, general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees. Schulte said employees should contact the ADA Coordinator, while students should contact Student Disability Services.

Return to Campus: PPE

Last week, Michigan Tech began Step Two of our Return to Campus Plan. As the University prepares for Step Three this fall, students and employees, understandably, have questions. Today, we discuss personal protective equipment (PPE). We spoke with Sarah Schulte, general counsel and secretary to the Board of Trustees, and Joel Isaacson, senior associate athletic director. Schulte says, “We’re asking everyone to Be Smart and Do Their Part, with an emphasis on Husky Spirit and a collective effort to protect those most vulnerable in our community.” Isaacson added, “We are all in this together as we work towards reopening campus this fall. PPE is an important part of our return to campus plan and we are asking everyone to help do their part to make campus as safe as possible.”

COVID-19 Campus Update

In spite of the new realities imposed by COVID-19, the MTU Flex team is working hard to assure the Michigan Tech experience is excellent for our students, faculty and staff this fall. There will be new expectations of our entire campus community, requiring extra effort from everyone. There will also be a need to maintain flexibility as circumstances change. But, I am confident that by working together, we can provide a healthy and safe campus environment along with an excellent academic experience. Face Coverings Required in Enclosed Public Spaces

Under Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s extended “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order, all persons are required to wear face coverings when entering enclosed public spaces, including campus buildings and workspaces, where social distancing cannot be maintained. 

Michigan Tech strongly encourages employees to provide their own personal face coverings in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance:
