Student research projects will consist of field work (logging stratigraphic sections and soil profiles), sampling, lab analyses, and presentation of preliminary results. The time in Serbia and Croatia will include a number of cultural excursions to visit sites spanning the history and culture of the region from the fragmentation of Yugoslavia, back to Roman times and even to archeological sites where Neolithic cultures burgeoned. We are particularly interested in recruiting students in the geosciences from universities or two-year colleges who have strong interests in research related to dust deposition, loess, soils, agronomy, and environmental change, as well as the implications to agriculture and history in the Balkans.

We will consider all undergraduate levels, particularly in the case of students from two-year colleges, but prefer students who will complete their undergraduate degree in 2027 or later. All expenses (travel, room and board in the Balkans) are paid by the project. In addition, each student will receive a stipend upon completion of all components of the project. Students are expected to: 1) Participate in pre-trip orientations via Zoom; 2) Travel with the group and spend four weeks with the research group in the Balkans; 3) participate in a post-trip research visit to the University of Oklahoma to further advance research (this trip is also paid by project) unless that research can be completed at the home institution. Students will be highly encouraged to present their research at a regional or national science conference.

            Eligibility Requirements

The successful undergraduate applicant will be from a geoscience or closely allied major. The student should have a strong academic record and strong desire to participate in a rigorous research program in the field in a foreign environment. An undergraduate student at any academic level can apply, but preference will be given to those who are rising juniors or rising seniors in Fall 2026. Although geological, because the research ties to agriculture, soils, and farming culture and history, students from rural backgrounds or students interested in these topics are particularly encouraged to apply.

            Website

    https://iresbalkansdust.owlstown.net

https://iresbalkansdust.owlstown.net Overview Six undergraduates will be mentored on methods of analyzing sedimentary deposits within the west-central Balkans (Serbia and Croatia) dating from Quaternary and Permian times, and interpreting their origin and significance.
