Move In Information for Returning Students

Dear Returning Residence Hall Student:

Welcome back! Since I started in March, I have been eager to invite you back to the home you’ve made on campus. We’re thrilled to have you return and can’t wait to continue the Husky traditions that you have enjoyed. New challenges await us all, but with a combination of creativity, tenacity, and a positive attitude, we will work together and create an opportunity that will reward you with friendships, memories, and amazing experiences.

To achieve this, a community effort is needed to prevent and mitigate the spread of COVID-19. For the upcoming fall, we’re calling on all students to take action and work together to keep the community safe. Residence Education and Housing Services is committed to doing our part and has put together a move-in process that works to maximize physical distancing, outlines safety protocols for you and your guests, and allows you to safely move into the residence halls. With more than 2,000 students moving in, we need all students and their guests to do their part and adhere to the protocols.

To help ensure safety and appropriate physical distancing during the move-in process, all returning students will be required to sign up in advance for a move-in appointment. The number of students who can sign up for each time slot is limited, so please plan accordingly. To give you as much flexibility as possible, we are waiving the $50/day early arrival fee. Students may arrive on Wednesday, August 19, or Thursday, August 20, at no additional cost as part of the appointment process. Students who select these early dates will still need to plan accordingly for meals, since meal plans don’t start until Saturday evening. Students can schedule their move-in appointment by completing the Returning Student Move-In Appointment Form.

We are also offering all students an additional opportunity to drop their property off between July 31 and August 9 (from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day). This is a new (and free) service to allow students to skip the traffic and drop off their property earlier to their campus home. If you are interested, watch for an Early Property Drop-Off application to arrive in your MTU email inbox around July 20.

We want to ensure you have a safe and positive experience returning to the Husky community. We will share more information about the check-in later in July to help you finalize your preparations. Until then, we hope you enjoy your summer!

Sincerely,

Matthew R. Weekley

What protocols will I have to follow while I check in and move into the hall?
As you begin making preparations, all students and their guests should follow these protocols to ensure everyone’s safety:

  • Monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days prior to arrival. If you are experiencing symptoms, do not come to campus until you have been cleared by your medical provider or the health department in your area. More information on this will be shared in July via your MTU email.
  • Arrive on time (or as close as possible) to your move-in appointment.
  • Bring no more than two guests to assist with move-in.
  • Wear a face covering in the hallways and common areas of the residence halls.
  • Maintain six feet of physical distance from others whenever possible.
  • Be prepared to adapt, as these protocols may change to match the current situation.

What is Early Property Drop-Off?
New for fall 2020, this is a free courtesy we are extending to students to drop their property off in advance of moving into their residence hall room to avoid the crowds and congestion. Please note that a very small number of rooms may not be available for this service. More info will be shared around July 20.

When is Early Property Drop-Off offered?
Students can select one time between Friday, July 31, and Sunday, August 9 (from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

What do I have to do to participate in Early Property Drop-Off?
There is an application that will go live the week of July 20. Students must agree to follow all applicable safety protocols to participate. Students and up to two guests will also have to follow physical distancing requirements.

Can I live in the halls or stay overnight during Early Property Drop-Off?
No. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate students who want to spend the night.
