Mental Health Awareness Simulation for Faculty & Staff

At-Risk for Faculty & Staff
At-Risk for Faculty & Staff

College can be stressful at times, and Michigan Tech wants to empower our faculty and staff with resources they need to assist students. Be prepared to lead real-life conversations with students that build resilience, strengthen relationships and connect them with support.

We’re excited to present the Kognito simulation At-Risk for Faculty & Staff course, which will help in recognizing signs of distress, determining if a student needs help, how to talk to a student in need of help and where to direct students for further resources. It can be difficult to deal with these kinds of issues, but an effective conversation can help more than you think—it can help change someone’s life.

As faculty and staff, we can take small steps that make a big difference. We hope you enjoy this simulation, as we all work together to help one another and build a stronger community. At-Risk for Faculty & Staff lets you practice these challenging conversations at your own pace through role-play with virtual students.

Use the Michigan Tech key to open a free account and take the simulation. It can be completed in multiple sittings and your progress will be saved.

TIAA Beneficiary Reminder

TIAA is mailing out the following reminder to update your retirement beneficiary information.

Naming your beneficiary, and keeping the information current, is an important aspect of managing your retirement account. A birth or marriage may have changed your thinking since you made your original choice. Or perhaps you never designated a beneficiary at all. Missing or outdated information can create significant costs and delays for those you leave behind.

This is a friendly reminder to make sure your beneficiary information reflects your current wishes.

It takes just a few minutes online.

The good news is that it’s easy to name, change or confirm your beneficiaries.

  • Log in to your account at TIAA.org.
  • Under My Account, select Change Beneficiaries from the Profile section.
  • From there, you can designate beneficiaries and select how much each should receive.

If you prefer, you can complete a paper form and return it by mail. To have a form mailed to you, call us at 800-842-2252. For your protection, we cannot change your beneficiary over the phone.

If you make a change, you’ll receive a confirmation by mail. And you can change your beneficiary again at any time. TIAA and Michigan Technological University appreciate your attention to this matter.

Employee Wellness Amazing Challenge

If you’re not familiar with Amazing Challenge, it’s loosely based on the TV show “The Amazing Race.” Teams complete a series of challenges while they race toward the finish line. Challenges are a mix of physical activity and mental challenges or puzzles. Each challenge needs to be completed in order to receive a clue to move forward. While this can be a competitive race for many teams; this can also be a fun family event completed at your own pace. The challenge usually takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Start thinking about building a team of colleagues, friends or family. Michigan Tech retirees are welcome. Teams are limited to four adults, although for those teams that are made up of families with young children, we do allow more than four members. Register here.  The registration deadline is July 7, 2017, at 5 pm.

The winning team gets bragging rights as the Amazing Challenge winner. HuskyPAW members will receive bonus points for participating.

Volunteers are needed for this event. If interested contact Shannon Brodeur.
