Fall 2018 Information for Students

We hope you had a great summer! Michigan Tech IT wants to update you about some changes that have occurred over the last few months.

Mandatory Profiles will now be used to improve login times and support

A User Profile in Windows contains your personal preferences and settings that are specific to the Windows Operating System. These include personalization settings like background, window colors, and icon size.

The custom user profiles continued to grow and have created long log in times. Each user having their own unique user profile makes diagnosing log in time or application issues difficult.

With the large number of applications in the computer labs, we have seen it lead to large, complicated and sometimes corrupt user profiles. Mandatory profiles will give everyone the same standard profile every login. This will eliminate the possibility of large or corrupt user profiles.

There will now be mandatory user profiles to improve login times. This will generally not affect preferences for applications like Matlab or Google Chrome since these are stored in a separate location called Application Data.

New Storage System and Home Drive Quota changes

With the new storage system, an increase in storage will be distributed to students, faculty and staff.

  • 1st/2nd yr: 4 GB
  • 3rd + 6 GB
  • Grad: 14 GB
  • Fac/Staff: 40 GB

New Knowledge Base

With the help of our customers, we’ve improved our online support center. Our new Knowledge Base (KB) has instant answers to common IT issues like printing, wireless, passwords and more. You can browse articles by category or search by keyword. For more detailed information, visit our blog post on how to use the new KB.

Remote Access to the Home Drive and the Multidrive

By moving to the new campus storage system, remote access to home drive and multidrive has changed. For updated information please review the updated instructions for Windows and Macs.

Printing Drivers

HuskyBW/Color have been upgraded. Please download the new drivers. The older drivers will work, but we’ve seen an increase in performance with the updated drivers.

Google Drive File Stream

Recommended for on-domain machines. This acts like multidrive and mounts your Google Drive on your workstation as a network drive. Filestream can be found in the Software Center on Windows machines or in Self-Service on MacOS. This is good to use to backup your machines.

Google Backup and Sync

Recommended for off-domain or personal machines. It lets you sync your Google Drive to your local computer and backs up your files to Google Drive’s unlimited storage space. MacOS machines with Self-Service can find it there. Otherwise, you can download Backup and Sync directly from Google.
