It’s Summer Camp…But Smarter!

Join us this summer as we celebrate 50 years of career exploration at Summer Youth Programs!

We all know Michigan Tech is special and Michigan Tech’s Summer Youth Programs (SYP) are not your ordinary summer camp. Participants perform chemical diagnostics, program video games, analyze crime scenes, and learn stock market investing! At SYP students design, experiment and create while exploring careers in STEM, Arts, Humanities, and Business.

Students use a microscope to "see the invisible."
“Experiences like these are what change people. This program encourages curiosity and stimulates the development of skilled workers which will solve tomorrow’s problems.”    – SYP Participant

You can help your student spark their curiosity, explore interests, and make an impact! Enrollment is open for 2022 programs and many courses are filling fast! View the complete list of 70+ explorations and fill out an online application at http://mtu.edu/syp/discover/courses. Plus, as a Michigan Tech alumni your child or grandchild is eligible for a $50 discount!

Our programs are built on hands-on, engaging projects, field trips, and collaboration- designed to spark curiosity and give students opportunities not always possible in a traditional classroom. We believe every student is deserving of this experience and your gift to the  SYP Helping Hands Fund will ensure those facing financial hardships will still have the opportunity to explore their interests and career aspirations, becoming the next generation of makers and doers.

Summer Youth Programs now offering Virtual Programs

In our 48-year history of delivering hands-on, engaging, discovery-centric Summer Youth Programs, we have faced and overcome many challenges. The cancellation of 2020 in-person programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic was undoubtedly the most difficult to date. Of course, with challenge comes opportunity, and we are thrilled to announce the launch of virtual Youth Programs (vYP) — the same hands-on, experiential approach we’re known for, delivered in a new way.

We know that learning happens through doing, and our vYP are much more than just screen-time. With a variety of program lengths, learning outcomes, and subject areas, we invite you to explore with us!

Courses include:

  • Calling all Writers!
  • Musical Theater Performance Intensive
  • BEHIND THE SCENES: Technical Training for Professional Theater
  • INTRO TO MUSICAL THEATER: “A day in the life” with U.P. Summer Theater Institute
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering

Additional programs will be added soon. Learn more about our current virtual programs here!

2020 Summer Youth Programs Cancelled

In our 48-year history of delivering hands-on, engaging, discovery-centric Summer Youth Programs, we have faced and overcome many challenges. And yet, the global COVID-19 pandemic has tested us like never before. Alongside you and your families, we have confronted adjustments to new ways of living, working, and learning. With cautious optimism, adapting and adhering to ever-changing guidance from government and health officials, we continued planning for our Summer 2020 programs.

Unfortunately, in consideration of the totality of circumstances at present, we have ultimately made the difficult decision to cancel all Summer Youth Programs this year. This decision was not made lightly, and arose out of our fundamental, resolute commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our participants while also maintaining the high-quality experiences we have provided for generations.

Over the next few weeks, we will issue participants a full refund of all money paid to date to Michigan Tech. Your refund will be provided in the same method used to make your payment (credit card, online payment, or check). We are also directing our creative Summer Youth energy toward innovation — embracing possibility and exploring ways to virtually engage with you. Please stay tuned for more information about opportunities to connect and learn with us.

Calling All Writers!

Where can writing take you? Often students who enjoy writing imagine that writing careers are all about creative writing (the next Great American Novel). If you love to write fiction or poetry, then go for it! But have you thought about other forms of writing like technical writing or writing content for websites?

“Calling All Writers” is a week-long exploration of writing as a profession. You will meet working writers in a variety of fields and learn more about how to shape your writing for different audiences and purposes. You will also have the chance to practice your skills with different writing projects and  learn new ways to approach the writing process, from brainstorming and drafting to revising and submitting for publication.

Don’t worry, attending the “Calling All Writers” program doesn’t mean you will be staring at a blank screen for a whole week trying to think of something to say. We’ll give you plenty of opportunities to get out of the classroom and lots of things to write about. If you are a writer, or want to be one, this is a great opportunity for you to meet and learn from other students who share your interests and from faculty and professional writers who can guide and encourage you along the way.

The “Calling All Writers” course is offered the week of June 16-22, 2019 for students in 9-11th grade. (CN52313) Don’t miss out! Find out more.
