Call for Participation: BASIC: Building Adult Skills in Computing

BASIC (Building Adult Skills in Computing) is seeking students who wish to help community members struggling with digital technology. BASIC took a break, but the partnership with the Portage Lake District Library in downtown Houghton is restarting in a combination of in-person and online help sessions. BASIC tutors come from departments and programs campus-wide.

In this fun and rewarding outreach program, Michigan Tech students work one-on-one with community members, not only “fixing problems,” but empowering them to become confident, competent digital citizens. The program also offers insights into the challenges of ordinary people as they make their way into the digital world.

Joining one of these sessions for even a few minutes is an eye-opening introduction to the obstacles that older adults and other newcomers face as they attempt to embrace digital technology.

Want to get involved?  An introductory training session will take place on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.  For more details, contact Prof. Charles Wallace at wallace@mtu.edu.
