Over the Summer Sarah is not regularly in the office May 5-Aug 24. Regular advising hours begin again during Orientation week Aug 27. Sarah can help through email, but plan ahead as she will be traveling and not always available to help you immediately.

Incoming First Year Students:

• Please complete your registration in July, you will be placed in CS, Math and Composition or Global issues course.  Everything is based on Math placement. Look for emails from the registrar with directions and suggested courses to pick from in early July. You will send an email from your MTU email and including your student M number to schedule@mtu.edu with your choices. Choices will include:Lab Science and 2000 level CORE General Education courses, Physical education courses etc. Your credit total should be between 14-16 credits by the end of Orientation week.

• Parents of incoming First Year students, students should be the primary contact moving forward. Please have the student email me themselves through their MTU account.

Some students supported by the department might be able to complete their degree requirements one or two terms earlier than usual (i.e., before two academic years have passed). If the student and advisor desire, support may be continued to the end of the second academic year to enable the student to continue work on their thesis or project.

This work will be done as CS 5990. However, under no circumstances should a student be coerced to continue work after their degree requirements are complete, nor may the student’s committee delay its review of the student’s work in order to extend the student’s stay.

Your entire committee (3 departmental faculty and one outside member) must be selected and confirmed approximately two weeks prior to the proposal. They must be kept up to date on the progress of your research.

Science, engineering, mathematics, etc.: must be approved by your advisor. Unrelated to subject areas are allowed (Physical Education, etc.) only if you are beyond your minimum registration requirements.

If a grade of BC or below is received in the course, it is as if the course was not taken. In particular, if the BC was in CS 5311 or CS 5321, that course must be retaken.

A student may not drop a course without the consent of their advisor and the department graduate director. If dropping a course affects a previously filed M4, it must be refiled.

Students must be continuously enrolled, except during summer and enrolled in the term they graduate.

A graduate student is considered full time during the academic year for all support, visa and financial aid purposes if s/he is enrolled for 9 or more credits.  A graduate student is considered half-time if s/he is enrolled for 5-8 credits.  A student may only drop a course that will cause them to go below that level with permission from the grad director and advisor. Students on a Graduate Student Assistantship are required to be enrolled for a minimum of 9 credits.
