Over the past year, we’ve made several improvements to Michigan Tech’s computing environment, with a focus on security and standardization. As MTU has now achieved R1 Research Institution status, the demand for secure, reliable computing resources is greater than ever.
What’s Changing
This summer, Michigan Tech IT will retire the /local/eit-linux network share. This location hasn’t been actively maintained in years, and much of the software in it is outdated or incompatible with newer systems like RHEL9. We’ve already been deploying all software directly to Linux Lab machines for some time, so /local/eit-linux is no longer needed.
What You Need to Do
Check that any software you need for classes or research is included in the Linux Lab Software List for RHEL9. This list shows software that:
- Has been dropped (due to lack of RHEL9 support or no current contact)
- Is already deployed
- Is waiting on information/testing
- Is not yet ready for testing
Make sure your software is listed with valid contact and course information.
RHEL9 Upgrade Reminder
We’re also upgrading all Linux Fully Managed desktops from RHEL8 to RHEL9. If you still use a machine running RHEL8, please email IT before the fall semester to plan your upgrade.
Guardian and Colossus Connectivity Changes
There will also be updates affecting access to Guardian and Colossus systems. Please refer to the announcement in Tech Today for more details.
We’re here to support you through these changes. If you have questions or need help, please email IT or call 906-487-1111.
