As the fall semester continues, we know many students have faced challenges, both expected and unexpected. And in the context of current events, it is possible that you have gotten off track in one or more courses. If things haven’t gone as you planned, the information in this email may help you make decisions and prepare for the end of the semester.
The last day to withdraw from a class with a W grade has been extended to Friday, December 11, 2020. This extension was approved during a special session of the University Senate on Wednesday, November 4, 2020. Students who wish to withdraw from a course can do so by sending an email to schedule@mtu.edu. The email should include your name, M#, and the name of the course you want to drop.
If you have already dropped a course with a W and wish to re-enroll, please contact the Registrar’s Office by emailing schedule@mtu.edu. You will need approval from your instructor in order to re-enroll.
At this point in the semester, domestic students will keep their full-time status even if they drop below 12 credits. This means your financial aid will not be impacted. Student-athletes should check with Assistant Athletic Director Rhys Edwards at rhyse@mtu.edu prior to dropping a course.
International students must maintain 12 credits throughout the entire semester. If you feel you have extenuating circumstances and must drop below 12 credits, please email International Programs and Services at ips@mtu.edu to ask about applying for a Reduced Credit Load.
If you are struggling, but you’re not sure withdrawing is the right choice, here are some actions you can take:
Talk to your instructor. Schedule a time to take a realistic look at your situation and go over best/worst case scenarios. They can also tell you whether you’re eligible to take an incomplete (I) or conditional (X) grade this semester. (If you take an I grade during a semester affected by the pandemic, you now have a full year past the end of the course to complete it.)
Talk to your advisor. They understand the consequences of dropping a class and can tell you when you’re able to repeat it. They also have valuable insight into how you can be successful at Michigan Tech.
Visit the Wahtera Center. Success Coaches can often offer test prep tips and advice on test taking strategies. Meetings are available remotely or in person. Email success@mtu.edu for information.
Reach out to your classmates. If you’re looking for a study partner, it’s almost guaranteed that someone else in your class is, too. Take the leap and ask the question in Zoom or Canvas messaging.
Continue with the class. Experience is valuable when you may need to repeat the course. Continuing gives you exposure to all the course material, and lets you experiment with study schedules and tactics that may work better for you on your second attempt.
