REMINDER HUSKYLEAD TUESDAY:  All aspiring leaders and organization officers are encouraged to attend the next HuskyLEAD session on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 6:00 pm in the MUB Ballroom A1.  The topic is “Financing and Budgeting for Your Organization” and will be presented by Travis Pierce, Director of Housing, Residential Life and Student Activities; and Eli Karttunen, USG Treasurer.  HuskyLEAD is free and all students are welcome to attend.

WINTER CARNIVAL RISKS AND LIABILITY WAIVER:  If you are participating in Special Events for Winter Carnival, please turn in your waivers to the Blue Key office by Monday, January 30 at 5:00 pm.  Have each member from your roster sign a waiver and turn them in all together. FILM BOARD:  This week Film Board is showing The Three Musketeers (3D) in Fisher 135.  It will be shown on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 at 5:30, 8:30, and 11:30 pm.  Please bring your Michigan Tech student ID in order to checkout 3D glasses.  Tickets are $3 each and concessions range from 25 cents to 75 cents.  Next week is The Lion King (3D). LATIN DANCE:  Join NOSOTROS on our next Latin Dance – it’s a SOMBRERO (HAT) PARTY!!  The event will be held on in MUB Ballroom A tonight (Friday, January 27) with Salsa lessons beginning at 8:00 pm and open floor dance from 9:00 pm – midnight.  Light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.  No partner needed; open to everybody; FREE!

SIGN UP NOW FOR PUERTO RICO SPRING BREAK SERVICE TRIP:  All students with a 2.0 GPA or above are eligible to join the Student Activities staff on an Alternative Spring Break service trip to Puerto Rico March 3 – March 10.  The cost is $150 plus airfare.  Most meals and lodging are included in the $150 fee.  If you choose, Student Activities can book your flight for you.  We will be staying in the beautiful, spacious guest house at Polytechnic University in San Juan.  The service entails maintaining the site of a retreat center and surrounding rain forest in Bayamon, PR.  It is not necessary to be Spanish-speaking as most of the hosts are fluent in English.  The trip is coordinated by the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers at PU.  You must apply for the trip by Friday, February 3 and your $150 fee must be paid by February 17.  Please complete the application ASB Puerto Rico application and return it to Student Activities in MUB 112.  For questions, call 487-2402, or email mawilcox@mtu.edu.

SNOWSHOE/ORIENTEERING WORKSHOP:  Do you want to learn how to snowshoe and use a compass for free?  The Outdoor Adventure Program is hosting a snowshoe/orienteering workshop this Saturday, January 28th from noon to 2:00 pm.  The first portion consists of basic orienteering instruction with a demonstration follow-up as we strap on snowshoes and head for the hills.  Hiking will be easy/moderate.  Anyone who can read the numbers on the compass can complete this course!  Sign-ups are preferred, so visit the OAP Rental Center soon!  For more information, contact Tom Maynard at twmaynar@mtu.edu or Eric Volk at oap@mtu.edu.  Be sure to bring a water bottle to the event, and we’ll see you on Saturday!

PRESENTATION AND TIMELINE DISPLAY OF BLACK STUDENTS ON CAMPUS:  The Black Students Association presents ” Black People in Focus: Educating Blacks in America” on Wednesday, February 1 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm on the first floor of the Van Pelt Library.  A timeline display, “Black Enrollment at Michigan Tech – How Far Have We Come?” will trace the history and experiences of Black students on Michigan Tech’s campus.  Refreshments will be provided.  For questions, contact Tayloria at tnadams@mtu.edu.

MIND TREKKERS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR FESTIVAL IN SHEBOYGAN WI:  The MIND TREKKERS student organization is seeking an additional 40 student’s to volunteer at the Sheboygan Science & Engineering Festival, which will take place Friday April 13 and Saturday April 14.  New and prospective MIND TREKKERS of all majors are invited to volunteer, and training will be provided.  The team will take two Wi-fi enabled charter buses on the 5-hour trip to Sheboygan, Wisconsin where they will be staying at the Blue Harbor Resort & Waterpark ( http://blueharborresort.com/ ).  All volunteers will receive free admittance to the Blue Harbor Waterpark, a $50 stipend, free hotel accommodations, and several free meals.  If you’re interested in going on this trip, please e-mail seallen@mtu.edu with a “yes”!
